tiffany. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. we are stuck. inching along. we have been in the backup for at least two miles. there were signs on i-80 west saying beware, all lanes are blocked. that is what we have seen here. you can see traffic basically at a complete standstill. we're just about half a mile away from el portal drive right now. this all started at 4:05 a.m. with a five-car accident. two cars were turned facing the wrong way, and there are multiple injuries. the coroner was called at 4:22. so at least one confirmed fatality. and again, multiple other injuries. two people at least transported to kaiser richmond complaining of wrist, ankle and chest injuries. again, at this point, all lanes are blocked as investigators look at this accident. as tow companies are called to remove the cars from the blocked lanes.

amy has more. >> reporter: yeah, reggie, bad news for these people behind me for their commute home.rd lane, eastbound third lane might not open until march, that's about four months later than expected. that's according to our media partner, the marin independent journal. they say pushing that retaining wall back 15 feet has been tougher than they expected. the plan is to create a third eastbound lane that would be open during commute hours. they're doing it because traffic on this bridge has increased 13% in the last five years and when it slows down, the backup stretches all the way to highway 101 and interstate 580 in marin so it's not just commuters who are anxious to see this open. residents say they see the traffic spill into their neighborhood streets so they say they need this relief today. they say they will meet with the contractor to see about speeding up the construction but that will likely cost more money so they're going to have to decide if they want to spend it and where to find it. so the delay till march isn't official but a high probability that that could happen

reggie and natasha, back to you. >> that is a relief. amy, we appreciate your reporting. thank you so much. >> let's get over to meteorologist mike nicco. >> i have been checking the winds, and still at the surface, as you can see, it's calm. if you watch that fire, it's just a nice cylindrical plume of smoke going up. once it gets up to about 1,000 feet, it's running into what's called an inversion. that's where the air is warmer above and it's not letting it mix out. so what's happening is it's hitting about 1,000 feet and then the smoke is spreading just about north, south, east, west or should say east and to a lesser extent west. so the smoke is going to stay up at about 1,000 feet. if it penetrates more than that, it's going to start heading up into the east bay hills as the winds are blowing from the southwest to the northeast at about 1400 feet. you'll see smoke all the way down to san leandro and possibly all the way up to richmond. now, the winds are going to stay really calm through the morning hours. they will pick up this afternoon, but the fire hopefully sho
