we have the southern poverty law center's richard cohen. i know that the splc has studied the whole range of these suspects and suspicious hate crime advocates and is familiar with this man. tell us what you know about him. >> well, frazier glenn miller, that's his real name has been a fixture on the white spremist seen for years. in the 80s had 2,000 followers and received stolen money from a group called the order and plotting a race war and training his men with stolen military supplies with the assistance of u.s. army personnel. we actually brought a criminal contempt action against him and he was convicted of that after he was convicted he went underground and declared war on the government. was eventually captured with stolen military supplies and convicted of carrying those -- having those supplies and plotting to kill the founder of the southern poverty law center. since then miller's anti-semitism has grown and grown. he's posted more than 10,000 messages on a hate website called vanguard news network. and he's just increasingly an

richard cohen is the head of that organization who compiled the report. s now is dafna linzer, the managing editor of msnbc.com. so i want to ask you, richard, because we've been talking maybe in a way that's a little bit messy here about both the sort of white supremacist aspect of violence and what we saw with mr. bundy, just kind of anti-government and we saw the arms but not violence. are these two very separate things, are very connected? how should we think about them? >> i think they're different but coincide in a certain way. the hate groups we identity are groups that vilify people based on their race, sexual orientation or the like. the radical anti-government groups that we watch are ones that believe in a variety of wild conspiracy theories. there is some overlap because many of those ideas, the new world order ideas came out of a racist background, the posse commitatus, a lot of anti-semitism coursed through that, particularly in the farm crisis in the late '70s and early '80s. some of the current people who are involved, you know, in some way

richard cohen appointed federal prosecutors to prosecute miller for con cement of court. after the prosecution while he was awaiting on appeal, miller goes underground with his people, and a nationwide man hunt was charged with trying to find him, and i think because he said he wanted to kill a federal judge and me too, he was found and brought to justice, i think that something happened to miller in this particular case. i think it may explain maybe why he did what he did today. he cut a deal with the federal prosecutors who were going after very violent, racist, neo-nazi militants in the country. he should have gotten 20 years in the case against myself and a federal judge. he only got three years for participating and helping the government. he became an outsider. none of the people in the hate movement really paid him any attention or really thought he was a real traitor. today he could be doing this because he gained himself some recognition, saying, look, i'm stand-up guy. you guys are just talking. i go out and kill people that are enemies of the white race. >> so
