rick: okay. the environmental folks out there say that this is just a bunch of nonsense, that these are scare tactics that are being fed out by the energy industry, so that coal plants don't have to be shut down. >> you know what i find really interesting, i did a lot of research on this, even advocates of this. when trying to mitigate the financial damage that this would have to the country, to these coal plants and also of course ultimately to consumers they said that coal plants were doing this any way. the industry had been moving to get rid of some of these older dinosaur coal plants any way. they do use economics. the administration, epa says in 2014 it's going to save $290 billion. saving 30 million lives, asthma attacks, things like that. that's a little disingenuous as well. rick: amongst conservatives there is the idea of over regulation, especially on the part of the epa which has become sort of a favorite target for a lot of republicans and conservatives around the country. you know,

and then you see ron paul and rick perry. this poll, we should note, is interesting in that it was taken in part after the gop debate on wednesday night when rick perry had that big oops moment. so that potentially has hurt him in this race for the gop nomination. now to the cbs poll which also confirms newt gingrich in a near front-runner status. herman cain there at 18%. mitt romney at 15%. not good news for mitt romney there. but newt gingrich right there at 15%. so what is old is newt in the race for the gop nomination. he has been bouied by the debate performances. you see him go after the media. conservatives love that. >> he's been slow but steady on the increase. he is clearly moving up. rick perry's been massively involved in what we call damage control. >> he has been in damage control mode ever since that big oops moment at the republican debate on wednesday night. and as you saw, wolf, he marched right into the spin room after the debate and tried to contain that damage. and has since been trying to make light of

herman cain and rick perry. it's fascinating when you look at the not mitt romney primary and the three participants in it at this point, you have newt gingrich who is the brainy guy and you have herman cain who clearly has the passion and the tea party loves him. rick perry has money. if any one of the three can put it together. brains, money and passion, the good news for mitt romney none of the three can put all three of the legs of the stool together. >> it reminds me of what other candidate would you most like and they were talking about being a combination. it looks like you need a combo at the moment to beat mitt romney. i don't think that is happening. you are up way too early in hawaii. the president is obviously in a trade conference there. what's the news out of hawaii and what do we expect? >> i say the big news as far as the economy is concerned is the president has decided to rhetorically get tougher on china. every white house official that spoke and briefed us and reporters here, everything was a

rick perry had one more opening.. he makes the gaffe that just totally reenforces it and it brought back so many memories of past debates and past years and gaffes that really crossed. i was there in 1976 on the campaign for ford when he went up against carter and an october debate just before the election and mitch frank of "the new york times" asked him about soviet domination of eastern europe and president ford just totally denied there was soviet domination of eastern europe. frankel was stunned. asked him again. he was trying to tell the polls and others don't worry, we're still there for you, but it came out as he didn't understand. all the momentum we had, he might have won that election. all that momentum stopped instantly, took days and days to get going again. >> i remember that, but candy, what did you think when you were watching that debate and you saw that oops moment? >> yeah, i thought it was actually pretty painful and i tried to morning to sort of think what if mitt romney had done that. what if he
