cnn's will ripley is live in pyongyang with more. you have been watching the festivities and seeing what the president is tweeting. what have you been seeing? >> reporter: it is just -- i keep thinking, christine, what it was like as recently as a year ago. think about last april. i watched the previous parade in the square where they unveiled new intercontinental ballistic missile. president trump was tweeting insu insults. bob woodward stated that president trump would pull out all of the soldiers from north korea. kim would have seen that as an attack. to think we came to military conflict to what we have seen over the wieeekend. a parade without missiles. the military componented scaled back. people were talking about the economy. they were talking about north korean history with pride. the issue at the mayday stadium where the screen from the summit in april where appeared moon jae-in and kim jong-un and the crowd erupted in applause. now people are not talking about nuclear weapons, but talking about the leader kim jong-un's mo

our international correspondent will ripley is in pyongyang.his 19th time reporting for us inside north korea. >> good morning. there is still no official confirmation here in north korea their leader kim jong-un actually sent a letter to president trump. it has been confirmed by the state department the secretary of state mike pompeo received that letter, president trump will be receiving it. he said he expected it to be a positive letter. it would in lean with the tone of communication between trump and kim. they have been very friendly with each other, whether on twitter or the letters that have been exchanged, despite the talks have gotten intense. we are on the ground here to be shown something that the north korean government wants us to see a major event. a large separation for their 70th anniversary. in fact, we have been told we need to leave the hotel, there is a press center set up for journalists all over the world, it's rare for them to invite in reporters. we have to go through metal detectors, screenings, that leads to us believe

cnn's will ripley has details from pyongyang. >> reporter: north korea's military parade to celebrateing anniversary left no no doubt this is a military state and standing army more than 1 million and thousands of soldiers marching here along this square. one dramatic difference i've seen this parade versus the previous parades i've seen in this very square the nuclear program was not included. you didn't see the nuclear symbol and you certainly did not see the intercontinental ballistic missiles that are believed to pose a threat to the mainland united states. those were kept away. the focus was on the soldiers, themselves. kim jong-un did not give a speech, the north korean leader but his wife did speak. one thing he said that i thought was striking he told soldiers they need to prepare to fight a war but they also need to be prepared simultaneously to fight an economic to build things like roads and bridges and buildings, to grow this country's economy. something that kim jong-un has said is his priority moving forward. something that he hopes the united states will be able to help

will ripley joins us now.h korea did not do here is to dismantle all nuclear facilities. is that right? >> reporter: this is in essence a confidence-building measure. destroying the primary missile test is fine. they have an arsenal of missiles that could be fired at any moment from anywhere. they have a lot of different launch sites. they say they will dismantle. they took down the cooling tower back in 2008 and then it was rebuilt later on. they say they will allow international inspectors in. that is significant. that is contingent on the united states taking reciprocal actions. could that mean the lifting of sanctions or could it mean something like north korea wanting a reduction in the u.s. troops stationed in south korea. what the north and south agreed to today without calling it a peace treaty sounds like a bilateral peace treaty. they are creating a buffer zone along the military demarcation line and will stop military exercises to avoid accidental conflicts. this is seoul and pyongyang saying we are

cnn's will ripley is live from hong kong.e you learning about the hotel rescue specifically? >> reporter: we know a number of tourists were caught not only in the earthquake but in the tsunami that followed. as a result, people are trapped under debris and with each passing hour the chances of finding people alive are dim. really the worst possibly development in the overnight hours to see the death toll 485 to 823 and rescuer workers believe the numbers will be worse in the coming hours and days. no communication and no power and the roads are destroyed to get in. the earthquake, itself, 7.5 a devastating event certainly in indonesia where a lot of buildings collapsed and thousands of homes destroyed, upwards of 17,000 people homeless and more expected. people sleeping outside because the structures are so unsafe. but even more devastating and deadly event was the tsunami that followed. a 10-foot wave that came crashing onto shore and videos posted on social media i want to play to you because it takes you to the terrifying
