meteorologist rob mayeda has more on the weather. >>> yes, big surf and run-off especially around theorth bay and san francisco, many locations two to four inches plus picking up almost half of the month's average rainfall in about seven day's time, less around the south bay and east bay, san jose, over an inch and a half of rain, santa cruz, more than four inches, we'll add a little bit more at times tonight. we'll see what is left of the rain we had had earlier now moving into southern california and california. next batch will be the system that brings a chance at least of seeing a little bit more in terms of some lighter rain to wrap up the weekend. tomorrow morning, kind of what we had this afternoon, close, may see sprinkles at times. notice by 5:00 there comes their best chance, seeing showers but it may not last very long. as you can see there getting towards 11 p.m., a few more showers west of san francisco, not a lot coming down most places picking up maybe a quarter inch around parts of north bay. half moon bay picking up about 4/10 of an inch of rain. high pressure centere

but first rob mayeda. we have so much rain coming down. >> we do. and the high surf causing problems. the combination of storm runoff and high surf. coastal warning around the next high tide at 6:00 a.m. that will continue through 7:00 tomorrow morning. mill valley, petaluma can see some localized flooding from that. a flash flood watch continues, the bulls-eye for some of the heaviest rainfall rates we've been seeing into tomorrow morning, we could be looking at two to four inches of rain. we've managed 2 in rohnert park. in san francisco, downtown picking up more than an inch of rain and heavy rain too out towards the east bay. you're seeing totals around oakland, over an inch of rain right now. and the south bay just getting into the act now in terms of the rainfall. you can see los gatos almost an inch of rain. quarter inch in san jose. and you can see the band of heavy rain from san francisco over towards contra costa and alameda county. these rain rates about a half inch per hour coming down. that's causing ponding on the road. and eventually

meteorologist rob mayeda is standing by to explain the wind and rain we're seeing right now, but first, let's join marianne favro in pacifica, where the city manager declared a local emergency. marianne. >> reporter: that's right, terry, pacifica has certainly taken a beating, especially in the last week. and as we see now, there are extremely high winds out here, and it's not getting any break. the apartment building you see behind me as been red-tagged. that means it is no longer safe for residents to live there, and many people have already moved out. the problem is the erosion on the ocean side of these apartments making them more susceptible to fall into the ocean. the city manager has just declared a local emergency, and she's hoping that that declaration will help bring the city more state and federal emergency funding. now, mike, who asked us not to use his last name, moved into this apartment about three months ago. now the city is asking him to leave because the whole building is at risk of falling into the ocean. he says most of his neighbors have already left. >> everything

rob mayeda, when does the next storm get here? >> we'll see the surf on the rise. 6 to 10 foot swells off shore and wave heights up to 12 feet and gusty winds too. all of that set to rise tomorrow as a strong windy system offshore pushes the swell to the coast. but the wind that reaches our coast as big waves, 15 to 20 foot breakers at 11:00 tomorrow night into friday. that on top of a king tide that is popping up as we go through friday and saturday with a high tide of 6.6 feet. so you've got the surf on the rise, the astronomical high tides at the same time. the threat for coastal flooding increasing as storm runoff increases from two storms coming our way that could drop 2 to 4 inches of rain in the north bay. we're watching the combination of high surf, king tides and heavy rain that could add problems on the coast. >>> a dangerous virus uncommon in the united states might be here in the bay area. a woman who recently returned from a trip is being tested for the zika virus. health officials are issuing a travel warning for pre

let's check with rob mayeda. >> january is the wet ef month of the year for the bay area. expect to get from three to six inches of rain in the north bay. so far with just over a little more than a week to go, we've eclipsed those totals. look at santa rosa. almost four inches in the average which aligns close to what we had in the el nino year. rainfall totals six to ten inches. obviously not adding anything right now. tiburon seeing clear skies. one more chance of seeing a little light rain to start the week. you can see the system here from the north, dropping down overnight, we may get a few sprinkles overnight as we head toward tomorrow morning. that's one thing we'll see along with patchy fog setting up. the suffer has calmed down right now. ocean beach wave heights only eight to ten feet. we could see these going back up to 20-foot waves as we go through workweek. we'll show you the timing on the next big surf event in a few minutes. >> you can keep track of the weather on your smart phone. vicky nguyen shows us how to get conditions on your phone at any time. >> it

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda with the answers. >> pretty good week so far. most places picking up half of the monthly average in about seven days' time. san francisco into the north bay, 2 1/2 to 4 inches of rain, oakland over 2 inches of rain this weekend. in the south bay, 1 to 2 inches closer to san jose, and on the other side of the santa cruz mountains, look at santa cruz, more than 4 inches of rain. right now, overcast skies, san jose towards livermore, 54 degrees. and san francisco, you've got overcast, and at times, we'll see a few light showers here over the next couple of hours, moving from north to south as our temperatures for tomorrow morning drop into the 40s, but our next best chance for rain shows up as we go through the day with another system here lining up on shore. this is going to bring more clouds and some rain to start the new week. we'll show you just how much rain we're expecting out of this next storm system coming up in a few minutes. terry? >> all right, rob. there's another way you can keep track of the el nino rain. here's nbc b

let's look at meteorologist rob mayeda right now. >> the lights very nice on the bay bridge right now. we're watching things calming down after a windy and very stormy start to the weekend and a lot of rain and waves up to 18 feet this time yesterday. and ocean beach today, you still have the white water there off the coast. but the wave heights have certainly come down a lot in the last 24 hours. you see only 5 to 8-foot waves. but this is exception to the rule. we still have some very strong storms offshore that are packing a big-time punch in the gulf of alaska. 37 foot seas. hurricane-force winds and eventually all that energy heads to the coast, bringing another round of high surf come tuesday and again on thursday. now the radar view shows you some of the weak chances of rain we've got coming up. a few light rain showers moving from north to south across the north bay. and at least for one more time heading into tomorrow morning as the weak system passes on by, especially for the north by and the peninsula, may see a few light rain showers early before things begin to clear out

but first, meteorologist rob mayeda spear heads our coverage tonight. >> the first system mainly light to moderate rain. you're seeing some of that in the golden gate bridge. the backdrop to this, the month of january is typically one of the wettest around the bay area during the calendar year. so rain averages for the month over 4 inches in san francisco. close to that in oakland. san jose almost 3 inches of rain. but it's kind of unusual for the next seven days is we can see maybe more than half of that falling in the next seven days thanks to four storms on the way. right now some light rain into san francisco. a little more moderate rain crossing the peninsula near san mateo. san jose mission out. a few sprinkles at times tonight. the system number one of four. lining up right there. and we will see rain increasing right during the morning commute. approaching 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. plan on rain at times for your morning commute, followed up by stronger storms packing a lot more rain and wind. you see them one, two, three, four, right across the pacific. all of this comi

rob mayeda is looking at what we can expect. >> the combination of the surf and the high tide times a coastal flood warning for the bay area including the mill valley and sausalito and rio del mar and in the north bay flash flood watches in effect as this is the bulls-eye for the heavy rain that's going to come down in the next 24 hours. the areas in the red and orange in the north bay there is a probability of isolated flooding in the smaller streams and creeks including the santa cruz mountains. tomorrow will be a windier day. the winds 20 to 30 miles an hour as the rain increases starting off in the north bay tonight and tomorrow morning. and 5:00, and if you are in the south bay you are wondering what is all the talk about a storm. all the heavy rain north of the golden gate. and by 11:00 you start to see the rain. and by monday morning finally now you begin to see the rain move off to the east. during the day tomorrow the temperatures in the 60s around th san jose. and things turn windy and wetter in the north bay all day tomorrow. the temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. a

meteorologist rob mayeda joining us to find out how much snow they'll get at mount rose. >> getting a lot of snow on top of that report, too. you can cee cee era's, 124% of average. these numbers look good. not going to be adding to it at least short term. but we'll begin to see changes as we pass the middle part of the week. right now partly cloudy skies, temperatures in the mid 50s, heading towards the 40s for tomorrow morning. we have a chance of seeing a few light rain showers late tonight into early tomorrow morning, especially towards the coast. you can see the rain gauge isn't moving much at all. santa rosa enough to measure at least until 7:00 in the morning. during the day tomorrow, gradually clearing skies. temperatures in the low 60s around shaig. upper 50s to near 60 for san francisco. for the north bay, tri-valley, patchy fog. if you staying the-free you'll see temperatures climbing to the 60s, but a few may see the central valley fog trying to drift back in from the east to west. in the meantime, 50s to low 60s. 952 millibar low, only 75 pipe winds and seas up to 37 feet

but we begin with meteorologist rob mayeda. >> around 4:00, from union city to fremont to the tri-valley, pretty energetic showers with brief lightning. right now, things are calming down. we're looking at light to moderate rain on the commute across the golden gate bridge into marin county. the showers continue to go off to the south. down to the south bay right now, not a whole lot happening. but plenty more rain on the way. take a look at the storm lineup here. over my shoulder, we have system number one over us now. stronger storm number 2 coming in with hurricane-force winds offshore. no winds in the bay area. but we'll see from it, will be large waves heading towards the coast. the wind across the water. fans rough surf our way and more beach erosion over the weekend. as the storms add up, the coastal hills, 3 to 5 inches of rain.

here's meteorologist rob mayeda with that forecast. >> we did really well last week.had about four to six inches plus of rain around the not bay. a couple more opportunities for more substantial rain. but in the meantime right now, 56 degrees, increasing clouds in san jose. livermore after morning fog and mist. still chilly. 52 degrees. 52 with increasing clouds into san francisco. and storm number one of three, the weakest of the bunch. starting to toss some showers approaching the santa cruz mountains along the coast and rain heading down towards los angeles. right around the start of looks like the golden globe awards. going to see some rain from north to south. this system again offshore here followed up by a stronger system that should roll in tuesday into wednesday. so storm number one coming in as we head through this evening and for tomorrow morning. mainly some light rain showers which should start to break down and shift off to the north after about lunchtime tomorrow. and a inrain projections here as we see, less than a quarter inch for most of the bay area

. >>> check in with rob mayeda. >> i think this is kid friendly, the numbers we're about to look at.he rainfall today, 70% to 100% of average, good news so far we're continuing to add to that. look at the sierra snowpack. last year on this date we were 36% of average. today 110% of average. huge change. you can see on the radar we are certainly adding to that. some of the heaviest rain of the day coming in right now. focused on the north bay right now. by 7:00 tomorrow morning, it will be highway 17 to santa cruz a mess tomorrow morning. but toward 3:00 in the afternoon, we begin to see our skies clear, a few lingering showers. then from 3:00 to the evening we'll see a break before the next storm comes in for tuesday morning. so this is the story of the season so far. every 24 to 36 hours one storm after the other follows tuesday's storm, another one coming in friday and early saturday as well. >> you've got it broken down dorgd to time, thanks, rob. >> "nbc nightly news" next and then coverage of the democratic debate in charleston, south carolina. >> we'll see you after that debate
