we're waiting for a press conference from captain ron johnson. we heard earlier from stephanie elam saying the streets are much calmer, crowds much smaller. heavy rain and lightning earlier, we're not sure whether that helped to disperse the protesters or whether people are slightly va lly wary. either way tensions have eased and no doubt ron johnson will tell us that in the next few minutes or so. >> he said yesterday and the day before, the violence must end, everyone must come together, so we should see and they started each of the past two nights with a bit of a prayer as well, doing what he can to -- >> but starting slightly earlier today as well, which is of course a good sign, that things have been more controlled and calmer. >> he'll want to brag about those points when that press conference begins. >> the fbi is interviewing dozens of witnesses in ferguson. special agents are looking into whether the police officer violated michael brown's civil rights. >> the accounts we're hearing about the shooting have major differences. >> a confron

. >> and that is missouri state police captain ron johnson, who is charged with keeping the peace now in ferguson, missouri. a lot of the news that just came out of this press conference, just now, johnson urged the media to focus on the fact that you do have demonstrators that are peaceful in ferguson. but the news that came out, there is concerns about what might happen tonight. this morning the ferguson county police chief released new information about michael brown. here it is. it is some surveillance photos which appear to show michael brown at a convenience store where there was allegedly some sort of robbery where michael brown and a friend of his were allegedly involved in pushing the manager of that convenience store as they robbed the store of some cigars. now what came out of the news conference this morning is the community was infuriated, that these photos were released because they claim that there are discrepancies, between these photos and images of michael brown after they were shot. it came out this this news conference that the governor of missouri, jay nixon was n

we have heard from captain ron johnson a number of times.s is about being with the people in the community. we physically saw him walk with them on thursday night and say this is about talking, knowing each other. what are those ideas that you guys have come up with? >> well, what the clergy came up with and along with other community members in that room, there is some immediate needs that need to be addressed. one thing they committed to do was to make sure that those who are out looting and stealing and creating mayhem at night, their statements were those people need to be arrested. they committed to support their local law enforcement in terms of doing that because they understand the importance of it. because they, too, want to see those that are protesting legally have an opportunity to do that. they are very committed to law enforcement being able to arrest those and engage those that are doing damage to innocent people and property, as well, too. in addition to that two other things we talked about again, i spoke about just a moment

how would you rate captain ron johnson's approach since he took over security for the area thursday? he's been on the side of the community. he's attended church services. we saw him out there with police tonight. how do you rate his performance? >> well, in the beginning it was stellar. everyone was really happy to have him on board. it was someone who related to the community. lived in the community. from the community. had dealt with discrimination from police officers and had been profiled. and members of his family. he had the whole story. but then to be quite honest, i went away to shoot something in louisiana for a day and started hearings reports on the news and it just devolved into chaos. i'm not sure what happened in a day that changed things. he said he didn't want the members of the police force out in tactical gear. didn't want them brandishing their weapons at anyone. that worked for a short time and then it didn't. and last night, as we were on the air, errol, you remember the press conference where he ju just -- and he talked about what precipitated the event and he

many including new security chief ron johnson joined in the march. but now with the release of these new images of michael brown, there's once again tension between the authorities and the community. now, to clarify, we just spoke to chief jackson who says at some point in the encounter the officer saw cigars in michael brown's hands and thought he might be a suspect in the robbery. he released the videotape because there were so many media requests for it. but at the same time they refuse to release more public information about the moment when the teenager was shot and killed. lester. >> ron, thank you. one of the officials you just saw in ron's report, captain ron johnson of the missouri state highway patrol is the new man in charge of keeping order in ferguson. a native of that town, a 27-year veteran of the highway patrol and immediately said we're in this together as he brought a strikingly different tone and style from the st. louis county police he and his officers replaced. >> our task here is to ensure the safety of the citizens of ferguson

we'll go live to ferguson, and hear from the highway patrol chief ron johnson. >>... in another incident a handgun was seized. at midnight bottles were thrown at police force near a business on west florenzi, forcing police to deploy shields and break into the crowd and search for the agitatorsers who hid behind the media -- agitators who hid gd the media for safety. the police is did not use tear gas but used minor amounts of pepper spray. no police officer fired a bullet. what made the difference, you may ask? tonight, theed elders in this community, volunteers, activists and the clergy come out in large numbers. they walked and talked with people. they urged order, calm and peace. that had a common influence on the younger people. as of 1am there were 47 arrests, and 41 compared to the same time yesterday. one of the arrestees was on out of state violator who we arrested for the third time. offer the past 10 days the men and women of law enforcement and the people of ferguson have gotten to know better and understand one another. it makes me proud as i see more and

ron johnson's job is to keep the peace.e should be focussed on keeping the peace let the protestors protest and let the police keep some type of semblance of society. >> haired you speak about a turf battle that is going on that we are seeing unfold there. has there been any resolution to that at all? >> none whatsoever. it has probably gotten worse. saturday at the news conference when governor nixon called for a state of emergency, there was no support around all of the other elected officials. in fact, we are in the county and a lot of the city politics is being played out in the county. you have city politicians coming out to the county to cause trouble and to create a name for themselves. this is a total and complete disaster. >> what is your perspective with ron johnson being in charge of the investigation, the highway patrol officer in charge speaking at the conference. what are your thoughts about this? >> ron johnson from all accounts is a very, very nice man. but people are starting to call him captain hug a lot.

ron johnson of the state police deserves much credit.ven the teargas was used with , i would say, ending on that note. but i would say that quietness is the absence of noise, peace the presence of justice. three or six policemen, firemen, and teachers. the unemployment is three times or four times higher than the national average. until we address in a meaningful way urban policy and plans for happenedction, it has lest wemall points address the bigger meaning of the ferguson explosion. you see the looting that has been going on, in stark contrast to what dr. king talked about, we saw that after his assassination in 1968. we saw it-- caller: when he was alive and he called riots the voices of the unheard. people have given up on the process. those who vote can elect mayors. those who vote can elect judges and prosecutors, so they must renew their spirits and use that to bring themselves into the process of equal potential under the law. whereby also a system the residents of a given community are so unrepresented by the police or fire de
