thank you, sal. and of course, as we've been mexing, we're keeping a close eye on the situation regarding b.a.r.t. tara moriarty is at the walnut creek station where she has not seen many commuters this morning. tara? >> reporter: it's been kind of light. we will were getting ready to interview this guy. he had to jump on the train. we had a chance to speak to a couple people and they mentioned they were definitely concerned about the protests going on. some of them get a head start. then were able to leave the house early. in case they ran into some traffic jams on b.a.r.t., they would be prepared. others chose obviously to stay home friday, of course, making it an extra long weekend and perhaps work from home if you are lucky enough to do that. we spoke to one woman who said she was extremely frustrated with b.a.r.t. because of the delays happening. a lot of the mechanical problems. she sort of mentioned, you know, last yeern when they had the strikes and there were delays and interruptions because

unfortunately on a friday morning, sal is watching a fatal accident. sal? >> yes.238. we found out more details. it was a car that had spun out on the freeway and reportly was t-boned by another car. the driver of that car that t- boned the car spun out only suffered moderate injuries, but unfortunately one of the people inside one of these vehicles was ejected and one person is confirmed dead by the coroner. eastbound 580 at 238. one car was completely on fire at one point. this is an area for you to avoid, eastbound 580 approaching castor valley. if you have to go to castor valley, go on east 14th and get on 238 or use 880 out of oakland and hit 238 that way or any number of roads, but don't get on 580 right now. westbound 580 is getting by but you may be able to count on being slowing to look at the scene. 280 in san jose off to a good start so most of the commutes except the obvious problem i mentioned are doing well. 5:17. back to steve in the weather center. >> all right, sal. >>> we have partly cloudy skies over us but all signs point toward a warm up beginn

here is sal with an update on your traffic. i haven't heard too much. >> there are a couple of things going on but one of the major stories is the golden gate bridge is open again, steve, avbeing -- after being shut down. tara moriarty is live with more. >> reporter: you will not notice too much of a change as you make the drive across the bridge. there is a different story when you are merging as you are coming into san francisco out of the waldo tunnel. no longer left to right but right to left as you approach the span. now, construction crews put a $30 million barrier more than 11,000 feet long designed to prevent head-on collisions. zippers trucks will be used to help manage traffic flows. >> one of the workers said we're getting close to opening it. so i waited and then he came and said, well, it will be about an hour. but being the crazy person, i am, i waited an hour and was the first person going across. >> reporter: so far, so good. you are starting to get a little bit better look at it, now that the sun is coming up.

sal has the latest on the deadly incident in san francisco. sal?ase you are just joining us, a b.a.r.t. train has hit and killed a person at powell street. we don't know why the person was on the track. if the person jumped or was pushed but we do know that the b.a.r.t. station at pout street is closed. they are waiting for the meablths to arrive. some trains are moving through in the millbrae direction going from san francisco to millbrae but trains leaving balboa park and heading out to the east bay are not moving through. there's also extra security everywhere. you see a police dog here at the b.a.r.t. station kind of doing a sweep now. i don't know if that's a formality. but the powell street station is closed. we heard the fire spokesman say it will be a while. they had to separate the train to get that person out. so what you should do is perhaps think about how you are gonna get to work. if you are in the city b.a.r.t. tickets will be honored on muni for tree for the dream being. if you are in the east bay -- let's go to the bay bridge toll

tara. >> reporter: thanks, sal. we do know the good news is that hotels did not see a dip. a lot of folks called the hotels and said how do i get from sfo to you? nobody canceled their reservation so that is good. different story for restaurants as well as shops. they expect to see a dip in business. potentially losing thousands of dollars. we did have the chance to speak speak to the owner of a souvenir shop who says after being in business 31 years. open 365 days a year she will close saturday and sunday because she expects little demand for her t-shirts and key chains. at a mexican eatery the manager tells us she may send home servers and take a night off herself. >> i think our nighttime will drop off to 70 or 80. >> reporter: tourists can still ride rental bikes into sausalitos since the pedestrian walkway will be open. but the golden gate carries some 80,000 cars in both directions on a saturday and sunday there is no replacing that with bikes, buses, or ferries. but if you live here, this may be the perfect weekend to dine out as it doesn't expect to be that crowded.

thank you, sal. we begin with continuing coverage of a large fire in san francisco that killed one man and left dozens of people without a home. it's been more than 12 hours since firefighters were first called out to the three-story building in the heart of the city's mission district. ktvu's alex savidge joins us from the scene where firefighters are keeping watch and they've saved another life. alex? >> reporter: yes, tori, good morning. we're learning about an incredible rescue. it sounds as though a small chihuahua managed to survive the fire. early this morning, san francisco firefighters were putting out hot spots up on the third floor of this building when they found that dog alive and doing as well as can be expected given the circumstances. somehow that dog managed to survive the massive fire last night. crews out here. they are wrapping up their mopup operation. they believe they've put out all of the hot spots in the three-story building that caught fire. it has retail stores on the botto

let's check in with sal. traffic it's going to be tough this weekend without the golden gate bridge. >> yeah. and you usually don't use the golden gate bridge. i think you will notice it, pam. richmond bridge will take a lot more traffic. i spoke to chp yesterday and they told me that they expect a lot more traffic on that span and they are going to have extra patrols up there. let's take a look at the golden gate bridge. this parking lot where our photographer keith is standing this is vista point. that is going to be closed for drivers. you're not going to be able to get there. you can't drive to the bridge and see what is going on because all the parking lots around the bridge will be closed and the closure is pretty wide. they won't let you anywhere near the bridge from marin city on down. and also in san francisco from about park presidio you won't be able to drive any further than that. just keep that in mind as you drive this weekend. people who use the bay bridge and we will go to the bay bridge toll

here is sal with an update on the traffic.king about the east all morning long. it's a great idea to check with your carrier even if you are not going back east. the entire system tends to bog down when there is a delay like that. you don't know when your plane is doing. take a moment to check in with your airline if you are taking a flight anywhere. let's take a look at the commute westbound, you can see traffic here is backed up at the bay bridge toll plaza for about a 25-minute delay. no major delays on the bridge. it's been a normal tuesday if there were any accidents. the answer is no, we don't have any major accidents. had a couple of fender-benders. this is 880 northbound. it's very slow trying to get up to downtown oakland. this is that typical commute getting up there. these days it starts in san leandro. it doesn't get better until you best past high street. the is lit up like a christmas tree. southbound 208 at moorpark. here and there. these crashes clear to the shoulder. all of the freeways are slow. back to the d
