i'm sam stein in for jonathan lemire. with a third indictment of donald trump potentially just days away, a federal grand jury in the case continues to hear evidence. yesterday a long time aide to the former president, william russell, testified before special counsel jack smith's grand jury. and also was reportedly by trump's side for most of the day on january 6, 2021, and previously testified before the grand jury. russell's level of corporation is unclear since he still works for the trump campaign. but we did get a possible hint yesterday as to why prosecutors are questioning him. in a bizarre scene that played out during an unrelated court proceeding in the same building where russell was being questioned, his lawyer showed up late to a hearing for a different client who was sentenced for his role on january 6th. when the judge pressed him while he was late, his lawyer said he didn't want to leave russell alone with special counsel prosecutors because his client was, quote, being asked questions which potentially in
