in san bernadino. you can see it there in the foreground, there is a police officer -- there is a marked cruiser off to the side. you can see police moving up through a yard to try to get a closer look. and, again, this is at least this is not near where the police -- where the shooting happened earlier, this is some distance a wears, but there have been for the last few howard, there has been an all points bulletin for police to be on the look out for a black s.u.v. and whatever it is that the police are seeing now, has them concerned. because when they have zoomed in, you have seen police officers crouched behind the door of their vehicle. the armed police crewser cruised there are people moving in and there is great deal of concern and people moving away. question is, what is this police -- what is this vehicle. it would look like that this is a vehicle that has been perhaps abandoned. and it also would look like there are lots of park marks on the windshield which could be a bunch of different thin

on san bernadino avenue between richardson, the pursuit terminated. there was an officer-involved shooting. last count 20-21 officers were involved in the gun battle with the suspects. the two suspects in the car are deceased. i have their names. first has been identified as syed farook. he is 28 years old. i am told he is american born. the second is a female, disceased well. her name is tashfeen malik. she is 27 years old. i do not have any additional information on where she is from at this point. the reason, and how we came across that, and i'll talk about the investigation a little bit. >> reporter: [inaudible] >> i'll talk about the investigation a little bit. there were questions you guys asked about a person that left the meeting angry. this was a meeting-christmas party-type event taking place with san bernadino county employees at the regional center. syed farook is an environmental specialist in the public health department, has been employed there for five years. he was at the party, left of the party early understand circumstances that we

going down san bernadino avenue and followed them say safe distance then i was going down san bernadino i heard a thundering sound. i didn't recognize the sound as gunfire. i heard something strange. a whizzing sound go by my car i thought oh my god that could be gunshots and i pulled over. i'm on san bernadino avenue and then i see cops running in that direction, just arriving maybe six of them and i hear more gun shots. he goes on i grab my camera and taking pictures, taking pictures of cops running with guns and all of a sudden a bunch more gunshots and then i ran. i made it to the other side of the street and i take cover behind a blocked wall on my belly and lying on my stomach behind a little short bring wall and more cops come over and the cops start yelling at me and pulls his pistol and asks what i'm doing here i'm a reporter. how did you end up here the cop asked? he says i just got caught up in. this we don't know who is out there. take your camera and go. i ran two houses down just east of richardson there is a family here and i have been hiding in their backyard and the cop

in this case, you saw san bernadino city and san bernadino county sheriffs, but you also saw cooperation immediate with federal authorities, the fbi, atf, homeland security. obviously there's a lot of crimes that have been in the news. for those departments over time. if you go down to san diego, ventur ventura, there's a lot of those relationships. i think that was one of the things you saw. sometimes people step on each oh's toes, but in this instance it appears they worked well together. >> in the age of terror, now that we're deal with the possibility of terrorism incidents, has that changed a lot? are the local departments happy to see the fbi, the atf come in, homeland security whenever something like this is suspected as possibility being terrorists. in limits of terms of personnel that you really do need to work together, whether it's with federal partners or departments near you. and especially when you look at l.a. county, which has 88 cities, there's been a last decade and a half a real move to try to integrate those departments more when it comes to cooperation. and you see i

amber lee is in san bernadino. you're at police staging area. how close are you to that shooting scene. kept baubling from about a mile from that shooting. let me tell you what it looks like out here. this incident is getting worldwide attention behind me. there are members of the press from overseas including germany and asian countries. now, again, we are kept a mile back. they are husband and wife. that i have been identified as 28-year-old farook and his 27-year-old wife, malik. the two were killed in a gun battle with police after they fought at them as they were driverring in their black suv hours after the shooting. published reports say falook had attended a holiday party there held by his employer. the county public health department, and that he left angry after some sort of dispute. he is now suspected of returning within a half hour with his wife, both dressed in military- style clothing and open fire. last night, a robot was used to conduct a slow cautious search so a house connected to farook. the concern was that there may be boob

we know that san bernadino city police department, we know that san bernadino county sheriff's department was also called out moments after the shooting took place. they launched their helicopter and their s.w.a.t. team. this has been a multiagency response from all of the neighboring cities. so, this really, there has been so much police work, good police work happening right now, and, you know, what's taking place right here, where their doors are open on these cars, they are standing behind them for a shield, as well, but again, fanning this neighborhood, coming through every house and you see a dog in front of this house, you know, it's a very sen tense situation for the officers trying to find the suspect and deal with the family dog who is trying to protect their property. >> and so many questions as to why this even occurred to begin with and i know terrorism is the first thing that everybody thinks about. we think about what happened in paris three weeks ago and innocent people being shot in the streets of that city, hoping that nothing like that would happen here. not to say that
