how do you think san francisco could change under his administration?> it's difficult to tell at this point. i think some of the issues that lurie was speaking to, particularly concerns about crime or the economy or housing insecurity or the lack of housing affordability, i think those are going to be some of the things that the residents of san francisco are expecting lurie to address, but that's easier said than done. i know a lot of people come into politics from the business world or outside of government and they come to find out there's a lot of constraints. you can't act like an authoritarian and get things done. lurie will have to figure out how to navigate this landscape. >> to the east bay, the recall of mayor sheng thao, it looks like that will likely go forward. what do you think is next there? >> i think it's going to be a very trying time for oakland. it already has been under sheng thao's leadership. there's been a lot of scandals and criticisms and outrage over the way the city of oakland is proceeding. so i think it's going to be a diff

it's lunchtime at san francisco fire station nine. there are plenty of good cooks in firehouses across the bay area, but not many women at their kitchen table because outside of san francisco, firehouses are mostly full of men. but then when you tell them that you're a battalion chief, it is it is shocking still to people. battalion chief sammy brennan was the first in her family to join the service. her path began in japan after accidentally starting a fire and watching her gramother calmly put it out. that smell, the excitement and watching her be so calm in a moment of chaos motivated me to do something like that. but for her family, she says, it took a trip to the u.s. and seeing her in action for them to get on board. you know, everyone in my family in japan, they don't have female firefighters, so they didn't understand what my job was. they thought i worked in an office as a secretary. they weren't sure what i was doing. brennan is one of more than 250 women who wear the uniform in san francisco. about 15% of the department, th
