now, the cabinet member is accused of rear-ending a car in san gabriel, hitting it once before movingthe scene. police say he hit another car five minutes later. then he was found unconscious behind the wheel at the accident scene taken to the hospital this weekend. nbc's kristen welker is live at the white house for us. kristen, explain what they are plaming about the seizure, how they're saying this could have happened and the secretary and his condition now. >> reporter: good morning, thomas. the commerce department says commerce secretary bryson is back in d.c. this morning. they are saying this was caused by a seizier. they say he has been treated for that seizure. he's resting in d.c. he has no public events scheduled. a couple of points i want to highlight, thomas. authorities out in l.a. stress the fact that there were no major injuries in the wake of these accidents. they also stressed that drugs and alcohol did not play a role, this was purely a medical incident. the commerce secretary was take ton the hospital in the wake of these accidents. and authorities out in l.a. say

that is when they say, secretary of commerce bryson was driving in his lexus and was in the san gabrielle area. he got out and spoke to the driver of the car and wound up rear ending the car a second time and drove off. five minutes later, he had a second accident. when authorities found him, he was unconscious. they took him to the hospital. it has been determined that according to the commerce department, that he had a seizure and that is what is behind all of this. he was cited with a felony hit and run, but never taken to the police station, never booked because he was rushed to the hospital. authorities out in l.a. stress the fact that he was quite helpful. now, commerce department says that he is back here. he is resting in d.c. he has no public events scheduled today. the administration, obviously, monitoring his condition and the investigation quite closely. >> with this investigation, is there any indication he had a preexisting situation, especially regarding seizures? >> reporter: great question there. potentially one incident a little while ago in which secretary bryson may ha

here is what we now know, on saturday at about 5:00 p.m., he was driving a luxus on san gabriel boulevard. he hit a car waiting for a train and hit the same car again. they say he drove to rosemead. he was fund ound. two of the people complained of ppain, another complained of pan but declined being streeted. he was sited for fron hit-and-run for the first accident. >> bill, how would you characterize or what do people say about his behavior at the scene? >> people say he was accounting strangely. he asked to exchange information, but he got in his car, put it in reverse, and hit it a second time. >> bill, good morning. >> good morning, the white house really hasn't had anything to say about this today, because i think they really didn't know exactly what was going on until recently and there has been no comment on the pending criminal charges. for the president this wasn't a great weekend politically because republicans continue to blast his remarks on friday about the relative health of the private sector. >> mitch daniels joined the chorus of republicans denouncing the president's stat

local time saturday on the streets of san gabriel, california. secretary bryson, driving a lexus, allegedly rear-ended a car waiting at an intersection for a train to pass. he got out of the car and spoke to the three men inside. then in a bizarre twist, bryson allegedly got back in his car and abruptly left the scene, hitting the car again. the men in the car followed him, calling 911 as he drove to the nearby city of rosemeade. then just five minutes after the alleged first hit and run incident, bryson allegedly collided with a second car. authorities found him behind the wheel, alone and unconscious. >> they've ruled out alcohol and drugs at this time. it's also -- the information was given that he suffers from a pre-existing medical condition. >> reporter: that condition is as of now a mystery. >> once you have ruled out drugs and alcohol, you would be thinking about a metabolic disorder like diabetes or an abnormal thyroid hormone, also something in your head like epilepsy or brain tumor. >> reporter: we don't know what cause the the seizure

a very short distance away in rosemeade right next door to san gabriel.esponded to the scene. listen to how someone from the sheriff department described this. >> when he struck that vehicle he was unconscious behind the wheel. los angeles county fire department paramedic did respond. he was transported to a local hospital where he was admitted. >> reporter: so he was unconscious at that point according to officials there. we learned today during the white house briefing that president obama has not talked to secretary bryson but his chief of staff did. it was the white house that learned last night, so a day after this happened, president obama learning about these accidents this morning. >> i think it was such a surprise to all of us. did the white house elaborate on whether secretary bryson had a preexisting condition or was this a first for him? >> reporter: the white house has not elaborated on that at all and we've asked. there is a report that perhaps the secretary did have some sort of pre-existing condition or experience with seizures in the past

the first accident happening in san gabriel and second in rosemead. according to a spokesperson, a preliminary alcohol screening of bryson was negative and the result of the blood test tests are pending. we're just now getting a statement from the commerce department. it doesn't say anything new but it is the first official reaction from the administration saying that the secretary was involved in a traffic accident over the weekend in los angeles and taken to the hospital for examination and according to this he has been released. we understand now that he's been released from the hospital. >> wow, that's so odd. is there any expectation at this point? did he have a stroke? are they still going to see if they can figure out if it's drugs or alcohol in his system? >> reporter: sure, obviously there's more to be done. it sounds like there's initial testing to be done or at least processed when it comes to blood alcohol but at this point we're not hearing anything from the administration or from local authorities about what the cause may be if it could
