sanjay gupta joins us tonight. sanjay, what is multiple myeloma?s a type of cancer, specifically cancer of cells within the bone marrow. the area in the middle of your bone. you get all these different cells that are produced there. one of the cells in that bone marrow starts growing too rapidly and crowds out the other cells. it's a type of cancer in the same class as leukemia or lymphoma. >> the statement says the doctors are optimistic about the outcome of the treatment he's receiving. >> this is a serious cancer. there's no specific cure for it. it very much depends on what stage it's caught and how someone is responding to therapy. i sort of read the same statement and read into that that there's all sorts of different treatments available. what you have to do with this type of cancer is you basically want to kill all the various cells within the bone marrow. you want to kill out the plasma cells, which are the cancerous cells and give more cells to re-create the bone marrow. it's a long involved process. that's the type of treatment he's unde

sanjay gupta. sanjay, all the cases have been reported in california.past 18 months. and doctors say all the children received polio vac makeses. so what do you make of that? >> you know, the polio virus is a -- is part of a family of viruses, and the likely thing that's happening here is that another member of that family of viruses is causing these problems. two of the five children were actually found to have a particular virus known a as enterovirus 68. it can cause similar symptoms. let me point out, and, again, the public health officials have been very clear about this. they don't think this is going to be something that's going to become epidemic or contagious, even spread within families. that's the good news here. they also don't -- right now they're looking for other potential clusters of cases around the country, and that's part of the reason they're talking about this now. in your own community, have you seen something like this, an unusual sort of symptom where a child suddenly becomes weak in one of their limbs? trying to find out if it's

sanjay gupta reporting on the dangers of the epidemic for sometime now.a threat. >> car crashes are no longer the number one reason people die accidentally in the united states. nowadays, it's actually prescription drugs. that's because on any given day people take more than the recommended dose. mix and match or take medications not prescribed to them. maybe take pills with alcohol. all of it can make for a deadly dose. the most recent data shows 37,000 drug overdose deaths in one year. mostly accidental. about 21,000 involve prescription drugs and of those, 75% were pain killers. >> more than 40 groups petitioning and the risks outweigh. doctor sanjay gupta. just reading about this, it is released and people will die. >>a i lot of doctors, they are concerned about this because the use of these drugs are the number one cause of preventable death. nothing will really work. they are looking for alternatives as well. this medication is about times as strong compared to what's out there. it is crushable and the reason that is significant is people will somet

. >> our own doctor sanjay gupta looks at why this is happening and what the report says about what canll, the prediction is pretty dire from the w.h.o. overall. if you look at the numbers, they say over the next two decades, they expect to see an increase, a surge, really, of 57% in terms of new cancer cases. look at the most recent numbers, 2012, 14 million new cancer cases. that's new cancer cases per y r year. they think by the year 2030, that number will go up to 22 million. again, new cases per year. part of this is expected. the population of the world is growing. we're getting older, as well. but i think what has surprised a lot of people, how much of an impact this has been on the developed world as opposed to developing world. there's a lot of recommendations in this paper from the w.h.o. about what we can all do to prevent cancer. and they point out that about half of these cancer cases are preventible. very, very important. half preventible. cutting down on smoking, controlling alcohol use, and weight overall. but also things like vaccines and early detection. again, both in

sanjay gupta takes a look. >> heart disease is our nation's number one killer. partly because a lot of people don't know the warning signs for a heart attack. they wait too long to get medical help. according to the heart association, about 325,000 americans a year die of a heart attack before they get to a hospital. the best way to survive is to be aware of the early warning signs. today we decided to give you the top five. chest pain obviously. it usually comes from the center of the chest and lasts a couple of minutes. it can go away and recur. many talk about the feeling of fullness or tension that lead to other parts of the body as well. sometimes the back or the jaw or the arm. shortness of breath. this may happen with or without chest pain. cold sweats. that usually comes with the pain. what happens is your skin will feel cool and clamy and that sweating can cause a lot of fatigue. other signs may be nausea or dizziness and the feeling that you can't focus. the key is to heat the signs and act quickly. i have seen so many patients reluctant thinking their
