nbc bay area scott mcgrew takes a look. >> there are hundreds of data points in the july consumer price index. how we talk about it depends on what data we're looking at and what timeline we're talking about. if you look month to month, we're paying less for all kinds of things. take a look. choosing some randomly from today's report. used cars and rental cars are slightly cheaper than a month earlier. the big changes are in gasoline, down 7%, airline takts down more than 9.5%. again, these are month-to-month changes. when we look from year to year, we're paying more than we did this time last year. inflation is still a factor. it would be entirely fair to use an up arrow in that context, but things are getting better and indeed faster than anticipated. it's a bit like the weather. if temperatures go from 95 to 85, it's still hot but cooler and getting better. it's all in the way you look at it. back to you. >> thank you. >>> we are moving you forward on the back-to-school and safety front, on top of mind of many students and teachers. when it comes to the debate about police in schools

. >> scott mcgrew, deposition, testimony, not trump's strong points here. >> it really isn't, good morning to you. we know this because we've seen taped depositions from trump before. he was involved in lawsuits a number of times as a new york developer, sometimes had a hard time sticking to the facts. here's a deposition from 2016, had to do with a restaurant backing out of a real estate teal. 2007 he overstated a number of things under oath including how many employees he had and even the height of a building. today's testimony far more important, because it does involve a case brought by the attorney general of new york. she's investigating whether the trump organization overstated the value of its holdings when it asked the banks for loans and then understated the values of those same buildings when it came time to pay taxes on this. this is separate from the georgia investigation into trump, the grand jury and the 2020 election, and separate from the justice department's investigation and search warrant at his mar-a-lago home. we now know the search took most of the day, from 9:00 a.m

. >> scott mcgrew joins us now.ther delay in paying back the loans. >> this will be the seventh time the white house extended the suspension of loan payments. president trump started it, extended it. president biden extended it five more times and we expect another extension today. so in that sense, for the past two years, nobody's had a student loan. it's as if they vanished. and the hope was from many democrats the white house would announce a huge forgiveness today but president biden has been consistent. he has promised $10,000. he did so back on the campaign trail and we understand that is what he will announce today, forgiveness on the first $10,000 of federal student loans for people making less than $125,000 a year. now the one idea i have not heard anyone talking about, and just to be clear, i'm speculating here, what about lowering or getting rid of the interest rate on those loans? some students making minimum payments are finding they owe more each year, not less. republicans are criticizing the idea of

. >> the bill also expands health care and scott mcgrew, this is a big deal. >> it is a big deal. when biden was vice president, he had more freedom to kind of say it's a big deal with maybe another word stuck in there, you may recall. it is a big deal. it's a $750 billion climate, health care tax bill named the inflation reduction act. it's a trimmed down version of his build back better bill. it still does a lot though. it retduces the deficit and expands health care under the affordable care act. president biden is returning to the white house from a vacation in south carolina to sign that bill after he signs it, he's leaving the white house again to go to his home in delaware. now, two fact checks. the inflation reduction act does not raise taxes on you unless you're a corporation that makes $1 billion a year. there are no individual income taxes mentioned in the bill at all. secondly, while the nonpartisan congressional budget office says the bill will bring in more money than it spends, meaning it will reduce the deficit, there's no evidence that the inflation reduction act

i'm scott mcgrew.mber 3rd. national cinema day, a day they made up for the event, 3,000 theaters across the u.s. will participate, big chains like cinemark and amc will as well. amc says it will have a one-day deal on popcorn and soda for $5 total. >>> let's look at the forecast. that's free today with kari. >> we're looking pretty good, too. i think a lot of people like it, except there will be some mainly moderate air quality across parts of the bay area due to wildfire smoke drifting in, a fire around oregon and the california border that's going to start to push in as we go into this afternoon. as far as temperatures, it feels really nice as we head up for about 78 degrees in napa, 77 in hayward. for the south bay we're looking at highs about 80 degrees and through the forecast, our temperatures will be heating up. unfortunately, it looks like it's going to be a really hot weekend ahead with some upper 90s and even over 100 degrees for some spots while san francisco will see highs in the upper 60s.
