scott rasmussen joins me now.t romney is the front runner but that has some good news tonight for newt gingrich. >> it certainly does. the first bit of news is mitt romney's support has barely budged. it's about the same as it was after the iowa caucuses. the person who is heading in the wrong direction at the moment, rick santorum. down 8 points from a week ago. megyn: what explains that? his performance in new hampshire? >> it could be that. there is an awful lot of people voting tactically. they are saying we are concerned mitt romney is running away with this. hopefully for some it will draw somebody else into the race. megyn: the new hampshire voters cared about electability and they believed mitt romney was the most likely to beat obama. what are you seeing on that front in south carolina. >> he's seen as the strongest potential candidate against barack obama. 23% say that's the man. 23% say newt gingrich. even among key party voters, those who are supposed to say my way or the highway. far away the new hamp

here now, scott rasmussen of rasmussenreports.com and author of "the people's money." numbers show -- mitt romney's numbers are steady like they have been in iowa and new hampshire, everything else is a judgment bell, rick santorum is down 8, newt gingrich up 3, ron paul up 5. should point out it is before santorum got and in dormant from the evangelicals leaders in texas today and i don't know if that will change it but consistently voters are looking for, if it will not be mitt romney, who do we want as the conservative challenger? >> gregg: how certain are those likely voters of their vote? >> not terribly, 52% say they know who they'll vote for and 41%, say they are not, similar numbers to the earlier contest and that is why we see the late surges, four years ago, south carolina people were drifting away from the lower tier candidates to choose between huckabee an john mccain and iowa and new hampshire, people drifted to rick santorum in iowa and paul and huntsman in new hampshire. same thing, likely to happen here. whoever looks like this best challenger will prob

month, the peoples money, how voters will balance the budget and eliminate the federal debt, scott rasmussens.com is our guest. i suppose the glass is half empty or half full for mitt romney in this poll. he's essentially tied with the president, but he's done better in some earlier polling, right? >> he has. if you go back over the past year, the president and mitt romney has been tied or within a couple of points one way or the other all through the years, sometimes governor romney has been up as much as six points, sometimes down as much as eight. but essentially near this equal threshold. one of the challenges for governor romney, though, is that among democrats, only 1 percent say that if that's their choice, they would vote for a third party, but among republicans, 10 percent are saying if it's a choice between governor romney and president obama, we're going to look for a third option. jon: so that leaves the window open for, say, a ron paul. i mean, he's discussed as somebody who might want to run a third party challenge. >> well, he is discussed in that way. i would be surprised, gi

independent pollster scott rasmussen. president of rasmussenreports.com.the company that conducted this poll. were you surprised to see newt gingrich on top, scott? >> well, i would have been surprised except we had done a national poll the night before and we saw this gingrich surge taking place. what happened, the speaker gained 12 points since monday night. came pretty equally from romney, santorum and perry. but this is a stunning turn around. part of it i think was the debate. part of it is sarah palin's comments. jon: you have a debate coming up, well, is typically newt's strong point. he could pick up more support i suppose? >> i don't know how the speaker could top monday night's debate performance. really one of the best i've seen. there also the other factor of this interview with one of his ex-wives coming out. this will be a tumultuous couple of days for this campaign. about a third of the voters say they could still change their mind. i think the message though, regardless where speaker gingrich ends up, there is still a vote out there for peo

scott rasmussen's polling most of folks he polled have unfavorable opinion and they think the tea partye 2012 election. where do you think that is coming from? >> as was pointed out previously the tea party doesn't do a lot of rallies now. in fact they do a lot of events on the local level. i can speak from experience on that. i spoke at number of events last year, tea party meetings, events they had on a local level. i'm set to speak at a number of events this year across the country. people are very engaged and they are involved. if you look at the 2010 election it was mentioned that the tea party movement was very influential. i think they will be very influential in 2012 as well. jenna: there has been still a lot of blame going around, matt. i like to listen to the head of the dnc talking in new hampshire. she was talking about political discourse in washington overall since, basically this period of the financial crisis. take a listen to what she has to say. >> i hesitate to place blame but i have noticed it take a very precipitous turn with, towards edginess and lack of civility w

scott rasmussen here in person, president of rasmussen reports.com. let's take a look at that poll.nge today? >> probably not. speaker gingrich has been trailing by ten points now for three or four weeks. he's showing a little bit of hurt. he looks personally wounded by the negative attacks on him and so he's lashing out a bit, don't think he's going to help that imagery going forward. jamie: he and mitt romney really going head-to-head in iowa. >> they sure are. jamie: any surprises for you from iowa as compared to the polls done and the outcome? >> you know, rick santorum was the surprise. he was the last person surging, in our last poll we showed him at 16 perfected 16% moving on up, but i wrote yesterday morning we don't know how high he could go, he could finish anywhere, first, second or third, not a huge surprise but for rick santorum very good news. jamie: this is a non-binding situation, the caucuses. >> right. jamie: how do you think the rolls will respond given the fact that rick santorum did have this great finish, that mitt romney was only a few votes ahead of him? will

what does scott rasmussen think about that? mussen reports.com, and, scott, good morning to you and happy new year to you. what did you find in this poll? >> first of all, what this tells us is republicans are a bit more confident about 2012 than democrats, 75% think the republican nominee will eventually win. only 67% of democrats are that upbeat. this is consistent, also, with data showing that republicans are more enthusiastic about it. but still a long way to november. republicans are much more upbeat about control of congress than the white house by a two to one margin. it's expected the republicans will retain control of the white house. and the plurality, 48%, say, well, we think the republicans will get the senate too. bill: all right. so when you measure the enthusiasm gap, what does that tell you as a pollster, scott? >> the enthusiasm gap talks an awful lot about the type of activity and support you'll be able to get out during the campaign season. in a presidential year, it's not so much about who will show up and vo

scott rasmussen, is an independent pollster and author of "the people's money." ou have issued a cautionary warning for people who are putting too much stock in the polls as we have seen them leading up to game day. why? >> polling for a caucus is much more difficult than polling for a primary or general election. this is not a case where people twiewct polls and cast their ballots. they will be in a room for a couple of hours and hear speeches from surrogates. all of those people in the rooms could still be persuaded, about half tell us they are open to hearing new pitches. so if you are looking for precision, that's not the right way to look at it. our poll and most other polls show mitt romney with a 2-point lead over ron paul. mitt romney should finish near the top but don't be surprised if he finishes second. that battle for third, fourth and fifth between santorum, perry and gingrich co-which could have an impact going forward, but the polls don't give us clear guidance as to who's going to come out on top. megyn: scott, last time around the polls did great.

scott rasmussen joins me live. gingrich is up 8 points. soy say where did he get that from?ssume sit would be mitt romney mp. not really, romney is only 2 points down. where is he getting the surge from? >> you are tapping into the moist amazing story of this campaign season. mitt romney's numbers have flat lined. they have been table since october. can't move anywhere. newt gingrich has picked up some support from rick santorum, a little bit from ron paul, but mostly it's people look for an alternative. anothing conservative voters gingrich has a 33-point lead. that's where he's doing well. somewhat con require's a tossup and among everybody else, romney is up by nearly 20 points. megyn: then you talked to the voters and asked about electability, who can beat barack obama. they think newt gingrich is their man. he's got -- 39% going for gingrich. % for romney. >> this is a huge turn around. at the beginning of the year only 17% thought it would be gingrich. the south carolina numbers turned things around. i think we are seeing two different definitions of electability. mitt

in south carolina, scott rasmussen went around and polled a number of people.ere is what he found. who is strongest against president obama, overwhelmingly romney at 49%. gingrich distant second at 23%. what palin argues we failed to vet president obama as then senator obama four years ago. >> well, yes. there wasn't much to vet. he had a pretty thin record coming in. now president obama did. it's important to vet all these candidates. you can't hide anything in a presidential election. it will come up sooner or later. that is the process we're going through now. i think that will won tin. bill: here is what newt gingrich set about that. he sent out a tweet to all his supporters thawing sarah palin usa for throwing your support my way in the south carolina primary. what happens saturday, jim? >> well i don't know. the argument being made on the ground by all the candidates interestingly enough is electability. suggesting that santorum brop drop out. santorum suggesting that gingrich and perry should drop out. the thing is that ultimately benefits mitt romney. w

rasmussen reports, romney is at 35%, gingrich, 21%, and santorum is third at 16%. the rest of the field trails by significant margins. can any of the gop rivals stop romney's momentum? scott are showing mitt romney is 35%, which is up for him by 7 points from what, january 12? >> what happened? jon huntsman got out of the race. all his support went to mitt romney. nothing else changed. all the numbers in this poll very, very similar except that huntsman support. megyn: so it's basically the huntsman support went to romney. but what does that tell you, scott? we have been talking so much about south carolina, the ad wars and how mean and ugly it has been getting. does that suggest it's not having impact or anybody else since they are not moving? >> people are starting to make up their mind. they have gone through iowa and new hampshire. it became clear the bain capital attacks didn't very much of an impact on romney. 55% think his record there is a reason to vote for him. overall i think what we are seeing is the same dynamics. huntsman supporters were always closer to romney. now there is a group of people who want somebody other than mitt romney but it's divide. megyn: b
