sears isn't as efficient as its competitors. >> the number-one reason why sears' strategy doesn't workis its productivity. it's about one quarter in the kmart division versus walmart, and on the sears side, when you put aside appliances, it's well below all its competitors. it's very, very hard to get operating margin in an environment like that. >> lampert creating the retail giant back in 2004, combining the two former icons of american retailing a promise of returning them to their glory days. it's off its all-time highs with real estate holding declined. and bahlter says another problem is pricing. kmart pricing is competitive, and rivals walmart where it's 20% above both stores. and sears, even with well-known brand names like craftsman tools and kenmore appliances, private label brands at lowe's have improved, meaning there is less reason to make a shopping trip to sears. sears lost 17 cents a share last quarter, the loss below 35 cents a share. revenue dropping as well to a slightly less than expected $10.55 billion. as total same-store sales for combined sears and kmart dropped

sears domestic comparable sales stores down 12 1/2%. the k mart comparable store sales declining 3.9% in operating loss. overall, a $58 million. what's interesting here and in contrast to what we've seen in a number of the other retailers that have reported over the last few weeks is the gross margins. interestingly, gross margins have actually been increasing at many of the large retailers. not so with sears holding where's the gross margin was flat. a total decline actually in gross margin dollars of $310 million. they did cut a lot of cost. but take a look. sears is flat. tar fwet was up 80 basis points. jcpenneys was up. walmart was up 90 basis points. interesting, in this environment that you would have gross margin improvement. if you would tell a retailer a year ago you were heading into the worst recession since the depression and you end up with better gross margins they would say, really? at that point speaking this morning to one of my retail sources, david berman, who runs a hedge fund that focuses solely on retail, he point

today, parent sears holdings dusted off the concept of a christmas club account. it lets shoppers store funds on a sears or kmart holiday card to be used for christmas spending. consumers have until october 31st to start saving and qualify for a matching 3% reward of up to $100. last year, the retail siblings resurrected their lay-away programs to help consumers manage holiday spending without racking up credit card debt. >> jeff: many consumers who have racked up that debt are having a hard time paying it off. capital one says its 30 day credit card delinquencies rose last month as did its loan charge-offs. that's the accounts it believes will never pay up. capital one caters to borrowers with lower credit histories. so it's not too surprising that its rivals saw a somewhat better picture. credit card charge-off rates fell slightly at citigroup, american express and discover financial services. bank of america, which has the highest default and delinquency rates among the top credit card issuers, said its charge-off rate inched down just a bit from june to july.

sears holdings, though, man, this just is a story that continues to eat up this stock price. down 2 1/2%. a negative mention in "barron's" over the weekend. it says cutting costs may not generate enough cash flow to mount a turnaround, a turnaround that was very much in focus, at least the prots prospects of one this past week, when sears holdings was out with its earnings. remember, it reported a loss and the street was expecting a gain. it was a big negative that was last week. the stock was down double digit percentage points on that move. warner chill cott, meantime-s up 22 1/2%. it's an irish company. it's buying png's pharma unit. $3.1 billion in cash. and that deal is expected to close by the end of the year. again, nasdaq just showing a fractional move to the down side. let's go down to brian shaktman at the nymex. >> thank you, scott. of course oil and the bulls made a run at $75 a barrel. they met some resistance, got as high as 74.81. the positivity coming from equity markets. and hopes of a global recovery as the equity markets waned a little bit. so did oil, but
