they were talking septa and the transport workers union local 234.hey have been inside this hotel since early this afternoon. i asked how confident they are that a deal will be reached. i was told that that will come from the union president within the next hour. tw local 234 represents 4,700 members who operate septa buses, trolleys and subways. they do it out of contract since the spring and have threatened to go on strike if a deal is not reached with septa in the very near future. i've been talking toç septa workers who would not like to see a strike. while negotiations have been under way behind closed doors, i've been making calls to offices. now, we're talking also about the election upcoming this week. state senator anthony hardy williams came out to talk about his support for the ongoing negotiation. >> those of us who are here would not, we pop how old we could avert a strike. we recognize the consequence to the city and the region on election day. i think workers of septa and twu recognize the consequences of such a strike and also to tha

>>> a possible septa strike in philadelphia is on the minds of commuters this morning, this as septa and union leaders will be back at the bargaining table to try and work out a deal to avoid a strike. a work stoppage could come as early as monday. nbc 10's katy zachry is live at the frankford transportation center with how this all could affect travel. katy? >> reporter: hi, vai. for one thing, it will add a lot more congestion to the roads. if you think about all the people who rely on these septa buses, trolleys and subways to get to work, and those people are now forced to drive or carpool in the event of a strike, you're dealing with a lot more cars for the morning and evening rush. now, we called penndot to find out if any of their highway construction projects will be put on hold in light of more cars being on the roads. a spokesperson tells me right now there are no plans to delay road work, but they will be watching the union developments closely and make changes to highway construction schedules, if necessary. now, back out here live, another group that will be affected by

what is septa's plan if the strike does happen? >> reporter: i've been on the phone with septa all morning and they call this a service disruption plan. basically, the buses and trollies are taken out of service and everything falls on regional rail. just to bring you up to speed on what's going on here, the membership 204 that represents the services i just mentioned authorized a strike because contract negotiations have not been going as well as hoped. and the 4700 workers have been on the job without a contract since march. now, here's the issue i've been finding, septa says there are items to be negotiated and both sides are still far apart on some of them. a strike would affect some 800,000 riders. and i'm learning septa is concerned that with regional rail already experiencing record ridership, adding extra riders will only make things more crowded. and those who depend on septa tell me they want this dispute to end. >> they need to sit at the table and come to some conclusion on what they are going to do so that we can do wh
