in concord, sergio quintana nbc nbc bay area thinks. >> we are tracking a tragic story on the central coast. a rare deadly shark attack happened in moral bay at a beach known as the pits. now, you can see it on the map. it is about a 20-minute drive from san louis obispo right there. police say before 11:00, a boogie border was pulled out of the water after an apparent shark attack. unfortunately, they didn't survive. they are not releasing his name or age. the beach is still open but no one allowed in the water for the next 24 hours. now, fatal shark attacks are pretty rare in california. the last one actually happened in 2020 near the state beach off the santa cruz coast. there were two other notable attacks in the bay area this year. one in half moon bay. okay? and the other one was in bodega bay. the be victims of both of those attacks did survive. >>> well, it took only seconds that is what we learned about that flooding that kill add couple on peninsula. it happened early yesterday at an under pass. a public works employee actually saw it happen just after help organize people s

nbc bay area sergio quintana has been monitoring the situation for us.alking illinois, arkansas, kentucky, among the states being hit tonight. >> reporter: these storms caused lots of damage along the way including at least two deaths. this is a photo shot inside a mostly collapsed amazon warehouse outside the st. louis area in edwardsville, illinois. lots of workers were trapped. you can see emergency crews trying to help those workers and assess the damage. right now, there is no information about injuries there but there is one person dead from damage in nearby defiance, missouri. at the amazon warehouse, family members are still waiting to hear word that their loved ones working inside survived. >> i talked to them about 8:00 tonight. a little before. i texted him and he was returning to the warehouse to drop his van off and i haven't heard from him since. >> reporter: in the town of monnette near jonesboro, arkansas, a roof collapsed killing one person. at leaf five others are injured. 20 people were trapped inswlid the roof came down. emergency res

sergio quintana has been talking with medical experts about what to expect with covid moving forward. >> reporter: across the bay area, this holiday season feels similar to last year. in san jose, valley medical center has already set up tents to get ready for more patients. in vallejo, the doctor just spent the day at the emergency room at kaiser hospital. they're already seeing more patients. >> health care workers are fatigued by and large. this has been a long two years for us. >> reporter: but he and other doctors across the bay area say there's light at the end of the tunnel. the doctor at ucsf says there are promising trends they're looking to. >> the experience in south africa where cases peaked in about a month and then started coming down almost as rapidly. in london, cases peaked in about three weeks and they seem to be plateauing. it looks like this burns through fast but then comes down fairly fast. >> reporter: in a series of tweets, he states why he and others say in about six weeks, the bay area could see a sharp fall in cases. the region has even higher rates than sou

here's nbc bay area's sergio quintana. >> reporter: the sheriff's deputies at the home of the two people who died in the flooded underpass. they're here tonight making an unusual visit to help loved ones of the two people who died get into the home. >> their family came frum los angeles to spend christmas and new years with them and they've been trying to get ahold of them all day and no answer. >> reporter: the neighbor and another member of the community had to tell those family members about the drowning. it happened this morning just before 6:00. san mateo sheriff's deputies say two vehicles got stuck in the flooded underpass. emergency crews were able to save one man who was standing on the roof of his vehicle but couldn't rescue the people in the second car. >> they attempted to gain access. however, the conditions changed rapidly becoming too dangerous for first responders. the water was rising rapidly. >> reporter: neighbors say the drain water rushed in. >> it was to a level i've never seen. >> water was rushing this way. the entirety of the underpass was completely filled with

sergio quintana reports. >> reporter: an outbreak in school what school officials had to managed over days all because the parents of two students decided not to follow instructions from marin county's health officials. >> we are trying to wonder why this happened. >> reporter: this has never happened before. the parents of two students got notice one of them had covid-19, they were told to quarantine both kids but they sent them to school. the parents did not tell school officials one of them was covid positive. on november 18th, public health officials called the school. >> what did you guys do to figure out we got an issue here. >> the first thing we did was to check attendance. >> reporter: three positive cases transmitted and five others were due to exposure outside school. elementary kids only been eligible for shots recently so none were vaccinated. the family of 75 students had to go through modified quarantine. >> they had to alter travel plans, this was a major inconvenience and alter their thanksgiving. >> this is very serious. this is a situation where we know that for som
