william shaffner, among those advisers to the cdc. dr.ffner, can you tell us a little bit about the decisions that were made, how the committee came to the decision? >> sure, anderson. this was a combination of several months of discussions of focus groups and modeling of illness to see which groups ought to go first, second, and third. we took that first step and voted for health care workers, the people who take care of everyone, we need them there in case we get even more of a surge, which we anticipate. and then also, it was added, the residents of long-term care facilities were added to that group. that's about 27 million people around and about, across the united states. if we can get the vaccine started in that group, that'll be a good first step. >> sanjay, what do you make of the cdc's recommendations today? >> i think it was what was expected and if you look at nursing homes long-term care facilities and especially back in the spring. that's 40% of the deaths. so that's an obvious place to begin. this is how they break it down.

shaffner. dr. schachter, i know you expect to be on call all weekend about both vaccines. when it comes to the moderna vaccine, explain why this emergency use authorization just came through moments ago, why do you think it will make a difference in place where you are in tennessee. >> oh, john, i think it is wonderful that we have a second vaccine, the moderna does not require all the intense, cold storage. this is the vaccine that we can distribute closer to the people. we can get et out to rural areas in health departments and in local small hospitals and they can be the focus, immunization activities throughout the state. with pfizer, we have to concentrate our vaccination efforts largely in metropolitan areas and this allows us to spread it out and get the vaccines out widely. that's very, very attractive. >> that'll be a big difference. to be clear, dr. gounder, it is not available tonight or tomorrow. but it has cleared a major hurdle as we wait for the cdc to sign off. today a lot of people did receive their first doses of the pfizer vaccines. second lady karen pen

william sh shaffner. dr. reiner, beginning with the list of lawmakers who have the vaccine, for the public health, we support everyone getting vaccinated. nonetheless, these gop lawmakers being first in line to get a vaccine enabled misinformation about this virus. i'm wondering how you feel about that. >> it rubs me the wrong way also. but i will say, there's a lot of benefit they can do now. every member of congress who gets vaccinated should post a picture of them doing that. and then tell all their constituents why they got vaccinated, and how safe the vacci vaccines are, and how much confidence they have in them. particularly the republicans, where a recent study suggested that over 50% of republicans say they either definitely won't or probably won't get the vaccine. having some of these members of congress post pictures and attest to the safety will go a long way in relieving some of that hesitancy. let's have them make this a positive. >> they say it's never too late to do the right thing. maybe this
