good news around lake shasta. they will get a little bit in that reservoir. maybe a couple of inches. for now it's all cloudy. we will take a look at the radar as it slides in. we've had this train of showers right in here for the last hour or so. and sort of looks as we move into the next hour or so. this will move into the southern san jose area out toward evergreen as well. it's real light. this is sort of precursor to what will show up late tonight early tomorrow morning. notice how mild it is. it's kind of a warm weather system. typically warm storms deliver us a lot of rain. but we're far enough south on these dynamics the main dynamics that we're just going to see a few light showers. the winds have been blowing though. they're down a bit. fairfield was gusting to 75 earlier. they're down to gusts to 21. oakland gusting at 22. so you probably noticed the gusty winds. so here's the forecast for 7:00, 8:00 a.m. in the morning, it's not well organized not like a typical winter storm. we're going to see widely scattered showers i have like i said reports o

the big one at the top is shasta reservoir which is way down. the one on the right-hand side is don pedro reservoir and it's very low and 37% of capacity or something like that right now. fortunately our water bank water is in the county mechanism so even if it leaves the reservoir for the districts to use we get credit because we put it there for their use at the right time of the year and the rest of the state is in hurting shape and this is a state water project so we look at concerns going into the next year so what about next year? so we have done some modeling going forward. the first note if it's above or at median precipitation we're -- [inaudible] average year that is enough to fill hetch hetchy three times so an average year would be really nice to have. if it's similar to 2007 and low precipitation and at least some snowfall and dryer than normal but the results will keep us at 10% reduction and something that we can sustain in the future.

rain into southern oregon, northern california, three quarters of an inch yesterday around mount shastaw the storm is winding up. this will come in late tonight into early saturday. and that front will be nearby san francisco saturday night and happens to be a world series game three taking place. the storm we'll deal with, light rain ahead of it, this will mean an unsettled weekend. this storm will have a punch with it, not just the rain we're predicting one to two inches in general here for many areas, but it will have very strong winds, coastal areas and oregon and higher elevations. notice we still are not sneaking too much of this down towards san francisco. they're not going to cancel the game, but there could be showers, in the 50s and winds at about 20 to 30 miles per hour. be a little brisk there in the stadium for san francisco's standards. the forecast for today, looking fine in southern california, 83 in l.a. little bit cooler on saturday, more on shore flow ahead of the system. by by the time we get to sunday, showers in the west. many areas of california remain dry. that's

this is lake shasta, one of california's major reservoirs, just one-third full because of the worst drought in a century. now scientists have identified one of the culprits. a high pressure region in the atmosphere they call a ridge. >> the ridiculously resilient ridge so named because it has had such a large impact on the day-to-day weather in california. >> so what are we looking at? >> so, this is-- >> reporter: the ridge, like a big boulder in the stream has blocked rain from landing in the statement for two years. and that kind of extreme atmospheric temperature is rare and probably connected to climate change. >> it's very unusual to see that kind of behavior in atmosphere. >> there is evidence that the atmospheric conditions have been made more likely by global warming. >> in this year alone the california drought will cost the economy $2.2 billion u.s. in direct and indirect losses, and some 17,000 jobs. that's according to one study from the united states of california-davis. the impact so far has been felt most acutely by farmers. some have had to drill deep underground for water.

rue rousseff is in the lead in the polls but it's too close to call, shasta darlington, cnn, sao paulostrong typhoon is set to impact japan by the end of this weekend. >> meteorologist derek van dam joins us with the newest information on this. derek, how does it look. >> japan in the spotlight once again. this storm intensified rapidly over the past 24 hours. it's now a strong category 3 teetering on a weak category 4 and it's actually forecast to strengthen going forward over the next day or so. this is the latest satellite loop you can see the eye wall of this particular strong, strong typhoon. 205 kilometer per hour wind gusts, sustained winds, higher wind gusts just around that eye wall. now, this storm is moving at quite a pace, 15 kilometers per hour out of the northwest or in the northwesterly direction rather and this storm is set to intensify to a category 4 in the next 24 hours but do have something working for us. we're actually expecting this to actually weaken before it just brushes the japanese islands over the next two to three days but the timing is extremely critical.
