joining me now, cnn senior crime and justice correspondent, shimon prokupecz.enior law enforcement analyst andrew mccabe. national security analyst juliette cayenne. and also, our senior terrorism and the crime and justice analyst, john miller. thank you all so much for being with us. john, let me start just with you, first of all. again, one hour ago, we did hear from msu police. they told us at that point there had been five injured. since that news conference, we have learned three fatalities. they have also released these photos that we now see of the suspect. what are you expecting, or what are you hoping to learn at this next news conference? >> well, i believe what we are now learning is that at approximately 11:56, 11:54 pm, a michigan state police unit on patrol spotted a suspect, fitting this description, walking on lake lansing road. they asked for the description to be repeated. it was a male with black pants, blue jean jacket, red shoes, wearing a backpack. they approached the mail. the male took out a weapon and according to police, conducted one,

back with me now, shimon prokupecz, john miller, and john berman.think tomorrow is the five year anniversary of parkland, the school shooting that you and i both covered. we've covered many of these. i don't know what to say about that. i'm all out of wisdom about that. but do you know, i just remember the intensity of that, and here we are again. >> look, every other day, or every other week, it's the anniversary at this point of another mass shooting, which is not to diminish, i think, the pain or the heartache or the concern that exists in east lansing right now. what makes this different and so many of the mass shootings we cover is that generally, it is, it seems as if the shooter is either killed or caught right away. i was just trying to think of the most recent mass shootings that we have covered and that we've done where the suspect was on the loose. and it was a man hunt. one of them was highland park in illinois, the fourth of july shooting, we are to control that night to apprehend that suspect. but then, the other one that might be the

shimon prokupecz joins me. is this considered an isolated incident?ve this is even politically connected. what they believe was that this was a coworker of russell heller. they suspect that he is the person that shot him as he was getting out of his car to go to work over at pse&g. the suspected shooter, gary curtis, was found dead a couple hours later, police say from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. they don't believe this is connected in any way to a second shooting that happened about a week ago in new jersey where in a separate county, in middlesex county, 30-year-old eunice was found dead. the police don't know the motive there. they are still investigating that. that happened about a week ago, but you know, of course, obviously, this is bringing great shock to both of these communities as police continue their investigation on the one that happened a week ago and then the one that happened yesterday. >> shimon prokupecz, thank you so much. >>> the desperate search for survivors as the death toll rises in turkey and syria. an update from the grou

. >> joining me now from the new york -- shimon prokupecz. n, cnn law enforcement andrew mccabe. and last and national security analyst shawn turner, and cnn's juliette kayyem. thank you all for being with us. let's start with, you shimon. bring us up to speed. what did we know about how this all played out? >> john, about five hours or so, around, as you said, 20 after eight, there was a first call of shots fired and what we've learned from police is that they went from that one location at one of the areas, berkey, that building that the gunmen then went to a second building a union hall where he shot and killed one victim, two others were killed at berkey. so, that is three dead. and then, five are in the hospital. some are with life-threatening injuries. and then, after the incident, police, a short time after that released a photo of who they believed was a con man. and then, sometime after that is when they encountered him, the police officers encountered him and the gunman shot himself according to police so now the whole thing is under

shimon prokupecz, appreciate the live reporting. let's get expertise from two law enforcement experts. former deputy director of the fbi, andrew mccray, and juliette ka kayyem. there's a lot we don't know, but here, anthony mcrae, in 2019, arrested, charged with a felony for carrying a concealed weapon. he pleaded to a misdemeanor and once his probation was up, his probation ended in may 2021. so he had a gun charge on his record. may 2021, probation ends, then you hear his sister calling him isolated. his father calling him evil angry after his mother died. why is the system still unable to connect this piece of information with this piece of information and say this man should not have a gun? >> sure, so it comes down to those regulations that are enshrined in the brady act of 1993. that sets the parameters for how background checks are done for gun purposes. michigan is one of most states that relies on the fbi to conduct those background checks. in this case, on the facts that we know from the reporting about this man, the arres

. >> cnn's shimon prokupecz is covering this in memphis.hat's going to happen in the authority room today. >> reporter: we're waiting for the arrival of the five officers, jim and erica, which could happen at any second, at this point, they are expected to appear in court here at the top of the next hour. it will be their initial appearance, their arraignment and it will really be the first time that we get to see them, that the community gets to face them and then also tyre nichols' family who are expected in court along with their attorney who will be speaking with reporters afterwards, they will hear the charges against them, they will enter pleas and then the case would be adjourned and then obviously on its process into a potential trial. this is all happening as the district attorney continues to investigate this case. several other officers are potentially facing termination and disciplinary matters, and then also there could potentially also be more charges according to the da as they continue their investigation. also we're still w

shimon prokupecz will continue to report as well. thank you. >> also this morning, the clock is ticking and this afternoon president biden is going to sit down face to face with house speaker kevin mccarthy for the first time since mccarthy became speaker to hash out differences over the nation's debt ceiling and the threat of a devastating financial default. mccarthy is prepared to negotiate an increase to the debt ceiling but the white house has drawn a red line saying they will not negotiate. the stakes could not be higher for all americans, not just for lawmakers and president biden. failing to raise the debt ceiling, for example, would delay payments to federal workers, social security checks. it would have a major effect on the benefits that veterans receive as well. if the government defaults, it could spike borrowing costs for consumers and cause turmoil in financial markets. it would likely stifle job growth. this meeting is expected to happen this afternoon. the big question is do we actually expect any breakthroughs or sub

cnn crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz is here with us with the latest on the investigation, including details on more new police recordings that will be released. let's start with you there in memphis. war you seeing there? >> victor, tough day. obviously, this is the community's first chance really to come out and try to put their arms around this family. there have been news conferences, but never before have people had the chance to come out and surround this family in love. all of this with an ice storm that's hit the city and made it pretty hard to pass around this town. that's why the funeral had to be t delayed today. but when you think about this, the outside of people protesting last week, this really gave everyone a chance to sort of show up and feel the common pain that so many people talk about. we've had folks fly as far away as l.a. to be here today, to city here in this grief, and talk about how raw the emotions are where they feel like police did wrong by a young man, who was just 29 years old. i look at the picture from inside that funeral, and you can see

i want to bring back shimon prokupecz's husband's reporting. what do you have? >> think about this.you're talking to just a short time ago gave us a timeline of when this first alert went out of shots fired sometime around 8:15 and there are some reports that the first shots that were fired around 8:18 near this berkeley hall, we're hearing that's where the fatality occurred. we are closing in here on three hours. at this time, police, number, one still looking for this gunman. think about all of the students and faculty that are still sheltered in place hiding, fearful for their life as police still continue to search this massive campus. so, at this hour, police are still going door to door inside the buildings trying to evacuate some of these students and faculty and staff members that are inside the school. we're waiting for police to hold a press conference here shortly in about 15 minutes or so. they said they would have won at 11:00. as you said, we are getting updates from the police and from the school, which has been obviously very helpful, certainly, for us but for family

first, senior crime and justice correspondent shipone prokupecz has more details on the gunman from his own father. shimon. >> yeah, so part of what law enforcement has been doing is trying to figure out what was going on in this gunman's life. so they have talked to the father. they have talked to friends, they have talked to the sister. we here at cnn have talked to his father as well. and certainly, the dad is painting a picture of someone who was very troubled. and he points to the fact that his mother died just about two years ago, and that since then, the gunman has not been the same. but this doesn't really give any more clarity as to the motive here. let me tell you what the dad has been telling reporters and certainly law enforcement. he describes that his son at some point became isolated and evil and angry. and that he was getting more bitter. angry and bitter and that he let himself go, and sort of indications of that was his son stopped cutting his hair, stopped taking care of himself. he even said that his teeth started falling out. so he lived with the dad, but certainly, the dad is paintin
