joining me, sister simone campbell, leading the network, a catholic social justice lobby.ning monday is goi on a bus tour. nuns on a bus to rally opposition to paul ryan's proposed health care cuts. sister simone, it's good to see you. thank you very much for joining me. tell me what inspired you and your colleagues, your fellow nuns to take on the bishops, in some case, and in fact the vatican? >> well, actually what's really interesting about this is we're actually standing with their bishops who also say that the house passed ryan budget is actually immorale. when the center came out from the vatican and catholic sisters were getting so much attention, we said, well, we're not used to having attention on ourselves. i mean, that's not what we're about. we're about using our opportunities to serve the needs of people who live in poverty. who live at the margins of society. who have fallen through the cracks of our rather fractured tenuous economy. and so we came together and i invited help from our colleagues to say, what can we do to lift this moment up? and we know how

. >> sister simone campbell is the director of network, a national catholic social justice lobby.gled out in its statements. we have this morning the sister joining us. nice to see you. thank you for being with us, sister campbell. so your group singled out as being essentially i guess in a nutshell it's fair to say part of the problem, if you will. what kind of sanctions could you face from the vatican? >> actually, it's very interesting that our organization is not directly related to the vatican. and probably the -- i mean, i'm not sure that they could do anything directly to us. the bigger concern is what they could do to catholic sisters in the united states. as a group. >> what could they do? >> well, with the leadership conference of women religious, what they could do is end it. it's like a leadership conference was incorporated or organized by the vatican. so the vatican does indeed have control over its organizational function. and so how it proceeds -- how lcwr proceeds is really an important question and needs to be in relationship with rome. but the piece that's missi

in a minute we'll talk with sister simone campbell who is part of "nuns on the bus" tour. me tell you why the nuns inspire me. they have gently cared for the poor, the sick and the homeless. today these sisters are pocketing their rosaries for the moment and pulling on their boxing gloves. okay, maybe that's too strong of a metaphor, but today i just fantasize about the koch brothers fighting the bus sisters. i know who i'm rooting for and i know who would win. the nuns bus tore is specific specifically aimed at protesting against the ryan budget. that budget, they argue, flies in the face of the teachings of the bible. of course, republicans routinely quote the bible while simultaneously violating it's teachings, but their hypocrisy is a subject for another day and other rants, but today we're celebrating those who don't just talk the talk, but actually walk the talk. or in this case ride the bus. instead of being towed by the forces aligned against them, the nuns are speaking truth to power. they are not doing it for financial gain. they're not doing it for political lev

let's turn to sister simone campbell, organizer of the nuns on a bus tour. sister, good to have you with us tonight. i want to get your reaction of what you just heard from paul ryan, his justification for these cuts through his faith as a catholic. what do you make of that? >> well, it may be what his faith tells him, but he certainly doesn't know the fullness of faith. he only talks about individual responsibility, and that's only half of the story. the rest of the story is that we know we can be responsible but only in community. we have to have each other's backs. that's what the christian faith is about. and so i like to say that because congressman ryan only has half the facts, he's 100% wrong when it comes to interpreting his faith. >> is the ryan budget plan, in your opinion, immoral and it doesn't measure up to his faith? >> i like the u.s. conference of catholic bishops and all of the bishops in -- catholic bishops in the united states agree it is wrong-headed. they call it immoral, and we're standing with our bishops. it devastates those at the ma
