sergio quintana is live with a look at the new safety concernse talking about here is about the skyway approach to the suspension span. that section right there. when it was being built rain and moisture got into the ducts. and rust was detected on the still ten dons. a uc berkeley engineer laid out the concerns in a story today. he says they did tests that were the least sensitive to the presence of pits, and lo and behold, the test says there is no problem. that's when uc berkeley engineering professor thomas def sign, who says caltrans found rust and pits in the ducts, but he said didn't use the correct method to test how much they could compromise the strength of the steel inside this section of the bridge. a bay bridge spokesperson says this problem is not new, it was discovered in 2008 when this section of the bridge was being built and says engineers and contractors came up with solutions to the rust problem and the die sign -- design of the bridge allows for continued strength even with some rust on some steel tendons. >> we have 10% more than would be necessarily required of t

she joins us live from the skyway of the new bay bridge span. what exactly is the problem here? >> reporter: we just finished the tour where they showed it to us. we're on the bikepath now of the new bridge. the problem is here on the small section of the bridge. it all has to do with these bolts down here. originally they had decorative cats on these bolts, but that was the problem. those caps were welded on wrong. spokesman said the caps were mistakenly molded to the base plate, which did not allow for wiggle room during weather changes. when the bridge moved a little, the bolts below sheared off. he said the problem was discovered during a routine quality assurance inspection. >> on a project of this scope and scale, something this massive, you are going to run into challenges from time to time. the very point of having a robust quality assurance, quolt control process was to catch these things in the field. there's not live traffic on the bikepath, the bridge. we are catching all these issues in the field during construction, fixing them, and making sure the bridge is 100% s

that used to strengthen the skyway. are suffering from corrosion. it is the latest in a series of problems which have come months. first, it was the bolts. used as part of a seismic safety device. 32 of them cracked on the eastern foundation of the self anchored suspension span. now a plan is in place to retrofit at least 96 of them manufactured in 2008. then, it was the welds. miniscule cracks were found in about 20 welds located at the base of the new span's tower the cracks are said to be smaller than a hair and are now being repaired by hand. and, now -- these steel tendons in the skyway section of the new span. the problems could end up delaying the labor day opening of the new span, and kron-4's dan kerman has the latest. and now for the very first time governor brown is questioning whether the bridge will be able to open on schedule. the governor says construction documents need to be thoroughly reviewed first and the new span will open only if it is determined to be safe. >> i adam reason did today let's look alum look at the >> we are expec

reporter: the concern we're talking about here is about the skyway approach to the suspension span.hen it was being built rain and moisture got into the ducts. and rust was detected on the still ten dons. a uc berkeley engineer laid out the concerns in a story today. he says they did tests that were the least sensitive to the presence of pits, and lo and behold, the test says there is no problem. that's when uc berkeley engineering professor thomas def sign, who says caltrans found rust and pits in the ducts, but he said didn't use the correct method to test how much they could compromise the strength of the steel inside this section of the bridge. a bay bridge spokesperson says this problem is not new, it was discovered in 2008 when this section of the bridge was being built and says engineers and contractors came up with solutions to the rust problem and the die sign -- design of the bridge a
