joining me now, the solar city ceo, lyndon arrive -- rive. battery that you guys are offering is barely enough to power a vacuum cleaner, why get one at all? lyndon: today when you combine solar systems with a battery you get back up. in most cases the backup is a generator, it uses a fossil fuel, it is noisy, dirty require space, in an emergency you may not have access to it. this backup makes no noise, it is against the wall, it looks good, and it can power two thirds of your house combined with the solar system. emily: only for a limited time? lyndon: as you train the battery, you use the battery but in the day, the solar system re-charges battery, it repeats. if you use a generator, you have to get fuel. emily: when will having a battery make financial sense for a large number of americans without subsidy? lyndon: this is a backup service. how important is back up to you? if you want backup, and you want clean backup the requires no maintenance, that looks good get this backup. if you want backup that requires lots of maintenance, looks ba

the big winners could be solar city that they cofound and solar edge. they are both channel partners. energy software company is also a partner. the shares are up today. it's not clear how the news will affect other companies developing renewable energy companies. sun edison and phase energy. also start ups like prime us power and embree are also in this area as well. despite fears of a utility spiral as more plugs on the grid, some including duke energy and edison international are installing battery system of their own grid. the biggest thing really to watch, everybody has been focusing on the home side of these batteries. it's the commercial application. as big business uses battery storage to bring down costs. in terms of tesla, they are already using batteries in some locations. amazon and target are rolling out programs as well. i will note that one of the biggest losers on the heels of this news is generac. they have been trading lower about 2% to 3% i will be back with you with a different story just as exciting. >> thank you very much. mandy, o

for solar city a simple theme that keeps going.j between the two just gets better and better. >> so explain this to me. last week we learned that tesla will sell this new battery storage unit at $5,000 including installation. solar city will sell it but then something quite confusing about their 7k power wall which they will not be selling. what is that about? >> you know this is this is tesla's first 4a into the residential energy storage market. so it's kind of a step in that direction. but, really if you have solar panels on your roof and you're attached to the grid the best thing to do is to sell your excess power back to the utility. that's what the net metering laws are all about. so, in most cases, it doesn't pencil to have to spend the first nickel on a battery system because you can just sell it back to the utility. there is some niche situations where people need it. but those are really the exception. >> i want to get to the future of solar city. you don't think for solar city to exceed that everybody will need a battery

not an indictment on solar city or solar. chinese production side is still over supplied. a lot of these companies are in trouble. >> if ying ling is a zero, and there have been accounting questions along the way, a company that's been public for three years, so accounting issues have persisted, it's back door ipo, so that was a little questionable not to say -- i'm just saying there's some concerns around this company from the get go, should we be concerned about other chinese? >> yes. tls is the ticker. this is a very good company. other parts of the solar space over here on residential are really where you want to be investing and i'm there on sun edison. >> we had this deal with tesla. solar city is the primary beneficiary. there will be a bid under this stock. if you see it back in the mid-50s that's where you enter trade. the stock has acted pretty well above 60. >> next up shares of yahoo! making a nice come back. the stock selling off after yesterday's close on fears of new tax laws. if you listened to analysts last night on "fast money" you could have profited fro

but we do see that walmart and solar city have already been working together with the tesla battery.ve seen through some of the filings with regulators that there have been home installations on a pilot basis of tesla batteries. i don't have the answers but those are certain clues that we will see something along that continuum. emily: what having one of these batteries be like having a generator? alex: yeah, but a lot cleaner. it'd be great. consumers are going to want these batteries. cory: let me ask you, -- self generation incentive program in california. how important is that in terms of subsidies to get this business going for tesla? nancy: california has led in creating these early subsidies that allow a new entrants to come in and compete, even though they have not come down their cost her. so it is quite important up in cory: like the batteries in my house. were thankfully subsidized by the government. a lot of tesla sales of cars are subsidized. i wonder how much they are going to rely on this program as they launch this battery. nancy: it is going to be ephemeral. it is go

>> what is really likely to happen is that tesla or solar city comes to you and says i will sell you a solar system and a battery pack. he will sign a contract, and what they will do on the backend is use that battery for one of a dozen different services that they can earn additional revenue one. tesla cannot do not right now, with their wood to do right now is that if the dispensary in your home it is going to provide backup power. if your commercial building it will cut your peak energy charges. but in the future, they will be able to network together thousands of these batteries and additional revenue by participating in wholesale electricity markets. they know that is the future and that was going to be a big revenue opportunity for them moving forward. erik: is it fair to s\ay that they see this is a bigger opportunity than the electric car? >> i would not go that far yet, but it will depend on how it develops, especially globally. at this point, they are getting to billion dollars to $3 billion a year in revenues that you have ascribed to automotive including selling greeting c

on to elon musk, one of the richest people in the world and he helped build paypal, space x and solar cityves elon musk? ashlee vance wrote the biography on mr. musk, which is out next week. the front cover picture, i absolutely love it, a picture of mr. musk as a boy. there he was as a child. give us a quick snapshot. we know the man, the myth, the legend. what was he like as a kid come as a teen? ashlee: he was into science fiction. there was this other side of him that i uncovered for the first time. he was a real loner and had a hard time in school. people bullied him. he didn't have any super close friends. it's interesting that he has become this celebrity ceo. his friends and said this would be the last person you would expect to do well this. he was definitely smart. he just kept to himself, so nobody knew what was going on inside his head. erik: everyone wants to know what is going on inside his head. what makes them so successful? what drives him to take the risks that he takes? what was most surprising? ashlee: elon is a unique case because he talks about wanting to take man to

notably missing is solar city. this not the first foray into storage for tesla. they have done this before with 430 systems going through solicited. -- through solicited. betty: you say they have got it quietly through solarcity? why is that important? dean: when you look at what happened in the solar industry cheap hardware, people got good at selling systems, and financing to the end customer. both of those last two pieces are missing. we have cheap hardware from tesla and tesla is making -- good at making the packs but you have to have the converters and someone to install it and someone who knows what they are doing -- betty: in your view it will cost more than the $3500 price tag? dean: it certainly will. betty: i want to bring lou into the conversation because you said this is a solution that has no problem. lou: yeah, specifically regarding residential, i think that is correct. betty: what do you mean? explain. lou: for the vast majority of us, the grid is reliable and cheap and the economic value to the customer and how it improves your daily life is just
