>> reporter: the pilot's name, howard solomon iii of southeast washington. he's 50 years old. he's not happy. he bought this drone online for $60. he said he had no idea it was illegal to fly a drone here in washington. he learned his lesson around 1:30 in the morning. he was here on the mall practicing and flying his drop. he lost control and it crossed over constitution avenue and crash landed. park police wrapped up a news conference and told us the white house was never in any danger. he didn't have malicious intent but still it is a crime so he was slapped with a citation. to give you perspective about the drone, it's rather small. 6 inches by 6 inches we're told about the size of a bird. that's coming from sergeant anna rose by park police who reached us moments ago. she says now they really need to get the word out that it's illegal to fly these drones anywhere in the washington area, especially by the mall or the white house. she says it will be joining with the federal aviation administration and their awareness campaign to get the word out. they'll also be posting si
