it looks like we are still abnormally try for parts of the south bay, into the east bay. and we are still in a severe drought. but all our reservoirs are near or at capacity. we have had such high amounts of rain in santa rosa, 177% of normal. for livermore, 11 inches for the water year. so a lot of rain. we're also about the coastal flooding with king tides come canning today. for more on that, let's head over live to san francisco. how is it looking as we approach high tide? >> reporter: well, kari, i know you and i were sitting in the weather center yesterday looking at the models and the potential for king tides. we measured waves of seven feet yesterday at 9:40. we are not seeing the water come up up on the abatement. it is expected to come up 9:40 with a potential to 6.9 feet. we begin to see the threat for coastal flooding, which means there is still a coastal flooding advisory that is expected to remain in effect until noon for all coastal areas, including this area right here. we will keep a close eye on that. it looks calm compared to what we have seen. i will k

focus shifts to the south bay by midnight. but sunrise tomorrow morning, the north bay picks up some of the heaviest cells. so first south bay, north bay then we all get hit by late in the afternoon. tomorrow 8 a.m. you can see a long band of moisture. but take away from these maps is it's going to be wet with heavy cells and there could be thunderstorms. in terms of amounts, i mean, from the north bay to the south bay more than 3 inches of rain. high wind alerts also the other part of the story with wind warnings in the hills. already there's 600 people without power in the santa cruz pluto's in west marin there are 1200 without power. maximum winds more than 60 miles an hour so far at diablo about the same at los gatos. right now they have eased up a bit but the winds will be picking up in the next three hours and so it will be windy and rainy and a bit of snow in the mountains but not a huge amount. so the storm timeline shows we get rain, it will be moderate through the next couple of hours, but overnight tonight is when we

well, another headache building up in the south bay. highway 17 is shut down in both directions, because of a mud slide that brought down trees and power lines. >> today in the bay's damian trujillo live with an update on when things could clear up. damian, probably not soon. >> reporter: good morning. actually, we're getting some good news out of the santa cruz mountains. one lane, one southbound lane of highway 17 is reopened. all the other lanes are o closed. right now, i was down there just about an hour ago, the chp officer told me, it will be a while before those other lanes are reopened. but again, at least one southbound lane is now opened. a number of problems on that highway. cars that were stranded at the time of the closure had to turn around and head back north. three big rigs had to stay there, because there was no way for them to turn around. caltrans earth movers are also there now trying to remove one or more of the mud slides from the highway. i also heard chain saws farther down the highway. no doubt some trees also ca

we have the commute starting to build for the south bay. a pretty typical pattern there for the rest of the east bay and 680 has cleared. now more traffic heading tower the walnut creek interchange. backups at the toll plaza. metering lights are on. to you. >>> 6:31. team coverage of the incoming rain storms. the first one moves through. >> we will see the waves picking up. stkph we could several hours from now. they have this warning sign letting people know the waves would be so bad coming over the seawall. you look at the pacifica pier. the national weather service issued a strong wind advisory. gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour winds along the coastline. it could lead to bigger waves, especially as this wind advisory goes the next 12 hours until 1:00 this morning. incidentally, 310 esplanade sitting on an eroding cliff side. we heard from the city yesterday. they tell us demolition of that apartment complex could begin as early as next week. it is just a matter of workers going inside with the demolition company is and prepping. bob redel

a dramatic sight in the south bay. this redwood tree comes crashing down on highway 17. they actually cut it down in hopes of avoiding more problems. robert, what's the status where you are? >> reporter: i think there are probably a lot of communeputers think this caused traffic tie-ups. big trees fall all the time during storms in the santa cruz mountains. they wanted to make sure these huge redwoods didn't come down at the wrong time on highway 17. the trees were on the fringe of a big mudslide that came rushing down on to the road at around 3:00 this morning. so the chp stopped traffic to get rid of the danger. you had a front row seat. >> how did we luck out? >> reporter: what did you think? it was cool. i'm glad we weren't on that side when that came down. >> reporter: what do you think when you see the mudslide? >> crazy. >> tree trump, wires, branchs, a lot of loose dirt, mud, gravel. there was a vehicle. the party was safely extracted. there's no major injuries reported from that incident. now the process is just cleanup begins. >> reporter: the chp says the muds

right now the south bay, 36 degrees. yep. it's in the 30s which means you could see some of that patchy, early morning frost on windshields. peninsula's gorgeous shot there. 48 degrees. mostly clear skies in the tri-valley and in the 30s at 34 degrees. out near the east bay. 44 degrees. san francisco, 44 degrees. north bay, a cold 33 degrees. now, if you are planning to take advantage of today's sunshine, here's a quick check of what you can expect over the next couple hours. should be climbing from those 40s into the 50s by about 11:00 a.m. fast-forward through your lunch hour where you should be topping out into those upper 50s at about 56, 57 degrees. which is much warmer than we have seen this past week. not just for san francisco, also san jose as well. we are starting in the 30s. but we could be climbing into the 60s. so, yes. 20-plus temperature increase throughout the next couple of hours. it's going to be a great weekend so far, but we're also tracking rain chances. a closer look at that coming up in a little bit. >>

no hotspots for the south bay. it is just crowded. ed in pittsburgh. this morning we are learning to people have been arrested. here is a map showing where they happened. this first one happened just after 12:30 yesterday afternoon on love ridge road. police say a man was stabbed in the back. the attacker then left the scene and then came back later in the afternoon and that is when they were arrested. police have not released the names of the victims or the suspects. >>> check this out. a parent's worst nightmare caught on camera. you can see two boys playing with a dresser and then it falls on them. they are both two years old. this all happened in utah. after trying to climb onto the drawer of the dressers, twin brothers pulled the dresser down. the two-year-old was trapped underneath and then the other twin helped his brother get out from underneath. >> he just came around to assess the situation thinking, i need to help my twin brother. what do i do here? he sat there and thought. tried to lift up first and obviously that didn't w

in the south bay, we're watching the guadalupe river between 3 sxlok 4:00 tomorrow. just briefly may get close to flood stage which will be 15 feet. now notice our other rivers and streams around the bay area. the san lorenzo river where we saw the live view from marianne. it is more than five feet in the forecast. that would qualify for a major flood. some other places near stanford university could be getting close to flood stage. some of the heavier rains appear to be focusing more on the south bay. it is one of the changes we're seeing. napa river, expected to go almost two feet above flood stage. right now, downtown napa may get close late tomorrow. right now, the current projections keep it just below flood stage. and the russian river, you can see 21.4 feet. that would briefly take it over flood stage. the bottom line is all the heavy rain coming down. especially through late afternoon. creeks and streams could be flooding all around the bay area. especially with six to 12 inches of rain likely to fall of we're watching wind damage as wind speeds pick up now th

but then it starts to spread into the south bay and the east bay. this is also when the winds will start to pickup for san jose over toward fremont and liver moore by 7:00, heavy rain and also the potential of some thunder and lightning. when this heavy rain finally starts to move off to the east, we'll still have the breezy winds and some spotty -- light showers left over at times. but even through tomorrow afternoon into the day on thursday, there still may be some lingering rain here in the forecast before we see things quieting down and the chance that we could see another one to 2 inches of rain falling on already a very saturated ground. so, keep in mind that you'll have to keep a close eye on those area creeks and rivers, if you live near one. keep looking out the window and be prepared to move to higher ground if you need to do that. and i'll have another quick look at the forecast coming up. scott and chris? >> thanks, kari. >> thank you, kari. i've seen a lot of folks at bridges taking pictures. just from the roadway. nbc bay area responds

it's moving over towards the south bay. look at east bay, though, it really covered the second portion of the east bay. anywhere from hey wood down to fremont, union city getting a soaking. your livermore valley commutes through the dublin interchange that's going to be very well here. that's where some of the heaviest rainfall is. it's going to continue on 680. so be very careful this morning as we take a closer look. you can just see what i'm talking about. the freeway, that's going to be very heavy as well. we're also seeing wind speeds kicking up right now across the bay area. it's a little bit leitner san jose and. you can see it's still very consistent rain, though, the but the heaviest is moving towards the east peninsula though. look at the bottom half of that really getting a soaking. all the way down to pal low alto. that's going to be a very slick ride for you this morning. and also through halfman bay. look at the north bay, we're seeing the coast getting a little bit of a break but most of it covered from -- dow

the south bay is still experiencing it a little, but the north and central bay are improving, verifiedely with this last system here and as predicted, we are looking at the aftermath. that columns a lot of advisories -- includes a lot of advisories in place. that is sfo where we have wet roadways and runways but at least the visibility is not so bad. we are looking at advisories in places for most of sunday. first of all a flash flood watch for the entire bay area which means expect minor flooding in your neighborhood. you'll find it there and on the roadways and freeways and then we have a few areas where we have extra concern. we'll start in the napa county area where we have a flash flood warning until 9:15 this morning. our creeks and our streams and our rivers are really full and some of them are overflowing. we have a warning in place from see sebastopol to petaluma and the santa clara has pretty much a widespread advisory and at felton at the river there's some flooding going on trickling into santa cruz until 10:30 this morning. take it easy out there. hopefully you are indoors

also a break in the south bay.ell the streets are wet as a few drivers make their way out there on the roadways. in san francisco, still soggy as we have seen the heaviest rain moving through about two hours ago for the spot. it's still light spotty showers moving through. we were seeing the shift of the heaviest rain now moving to the east of the bay area and also farther off toward the south. let's get a close look at where we have seen the heaviest rain moving in in parts of the peninsula. you are seeing a steady downpour in palo alto. steady rain in san jose. we have had pockets of heavy rain. now we are seeing more shades of green on the map. not the reds and yellows showing the more intense rain. for the santa cruz mountains we are seeing some of the bright greens there. it shifts over to the morgan hill, gilroy area where it's still really coming down. i just retweeted a viewer who has had three-quarters of an inch of rain. thank you for that information. you can send us what the weather looks like where you

parked it on the mountain in san bruno to get the best view of the north bay all the way down to the south bay and over toward the east bay. we are scanning this with our mobile doppler radar truck and seeing what it looks like as the rain comes out of the clouds, and we're picking up a line of bright red and yellow showing the most intense rain moving through at this point. you see there, on the radar, it once again is picking up on the heaviest rain over san francisco and also just to the south of there, over toward parts of the north bay and extending into the east bay. fairfield right now also getting in on very heavy downpours. so we will continue to go around the bay area. also wanted to keep you up to date that both northbound and southbound 101 near windsor has been closed. we're seeing that there's some flooding there. cars in water, and is going to cause quite a few problems for folks getting out there on the road in the north bay. we'll have more on this and a closer look at where you live coming up a few minutes. >> thank you. >>> well, let's bring in today in the bay's pizza ronno
