i'm joined by longtime south bay politician joe simitian. he is also stepping away after 41 years in office. how he got his start, and what his advice is for anyone looking to get into public service. you're watching nbc bay area news tonight she has served oakland for 26 years. so as i look back on my time, though, i feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to not only serve my community, but to advance justice, equity, and peace throughout our country and the entire world. that was lee during her last speech on the floor of congress a few weeks ago. lee is l leaving office at8 years old as the highest ranking african-american woman appointed to democratic leadership since being elected in 1998. lee focused on advocating, as you heard, for diversity, human rights, social and economic justice. one of lee's biggest moments, though, came after the september 11th attack. she was the only member of congress to vote against the war in afghanistan. lateefah simon will take over lee's seat when she is sworn into office tomorrow. she changed my

this will take some time to play out, and we'll have to see what effect it ultimately has in the south bayn cull nbc bay area news. a live look tonight at the bay bridge. it looks the same as it did yesterday, but now it costs more to cross. the bridge is one of seven state owned bridges where bay area bridges, where you'll have to shell out a dollar more to cross. so tolls for regular cars, that's now $8. the increase was part of a measure approved by voters, and that will include support for transit and highway improvements. the toll change does not include the golden gate bridge. bart and muni fares are also going up by about $0.25, depending on your route. so how do riders feel about it? i think that i don't like it when fares increase, but it seems like it's kind of a necessity in these days with inflation. bart says the increase is meant to help keep pace with inflation, and also support operations to move toward restoring financial stability. muni says its changes were tied to public feedback received earlier this year during the budget process. okay. bay area high school marching b

least for the next couple of hours, finally pushing that storm line further east and down into the south bayto the mid morning hours, we're going to keep a chance of a norther north, the north bay getting some thunderstorm activity, very light chances, but not non-zero if that makes sense. as we go on and track this line of storms, we see it turning lighter into the north bay. as we go on into the mid-morning and again into our lunchtime hour. the south bay looks wet, but that is about it. we should see some peeks of sunshine right around sunset, finally giving us a little bit of a breather and jumpstarting our weekend. our temperatures are going to be cold, much colder than where we were yesterday. it felt mild down here in the south bay in those mid to upper 60s. not today. we're going barely making it out of those upper 50s through san jose. gilroy similar feel as we go up into the north bay. much cooler up there in lake county. that'll be it for the cold temperatures and the rain for a while. here's why i was mentioning that it could be concerning for that snow pack. notice that the west

you can see that this distralts right east bay and south bay, parts of the east bay and south bay are in what's called abnormally dry conditions. so we could certainly use some more rain there. having said that after this next system. and i do think we'll get some in the east bay in the south bay from this and a little bit of snow in the sierra. but after this, that ridge is going to keep everything going right over the top of us heading into the pacific northwest and skirting the bay-area altogether. so in general, we're starting our new year. pretty quiet right? and certainly today with the blue skies out there. pretty lovely as we take a look at temperatures above average in a few spots today to you can see those 60's right now in napa and santa rosa. 65 though, in san jose, south bay, israeli overperforming wind is relatively calm so far today. and we've seen a little bit of an offshore flow. we are going to see a little bit of a breeze as the system goes through. so that will be part of the forecast as we see a little bit of rain tomorrow morning into the afternoon. but after tha

we're going to draw our attention to the south bay highlighted in that purple color.reeze warning as we wake up and get ready for our monday. that's going to make it tough to get out of bed. you might sit at the edge of your bed and just huddle up. frost advisory for just about everybody else except the immediate coastline, where it just doesn't drop down as fast because of its close proximity to the water. there, you might notice some icy roads early. so what are some things that we can do to prepare now? we're going to find our warmest layers. if you want to get into your warm pjs now, have at it. maybe even keep it on through tomorrow morning. remember to bring the pets inside. check on your sensitive plants and the pipes out there. maybe a little drip running could also be helpful for there. don't freak out if monday morning rolls around and your car tire light comes on. the cold just compresses the tires, but it should start to recover as we go on into the afternoon. so 7 a.m. rolls around 30s and 40s here, very cold in the south bay. we go up into the noon hour.

will be down here to 42 in the south bay, 38 in the tri-valley. oming in with some upper 30s in the north bay. san francisco headed there for work 43 and for the east bay 39. and talk about a rebound tomorrow afternoon. we're going to go up 2030 degrees warmer once we hit that afternoon. and i'm calling it best weather, no doubt right here across the south bay. we got 68 in san jose. i mean we're close to 70 for a lot of the south bay 69 here in morgan hill right over to the east bay. you're at 65 in oakland, 64 vallejo, 63 in livermore peninsula checking in with 60 and half moon bay, 63, in redwood city. and calm winds throughout the bay area, 61 here in the marina and 64 in the mission up acrosshe north bay, 64 in clear lake and down here towards mill valley 61 now this sunny weather tomorrow, it's going to be beautiful to be outside in, but it is january. we would really like to get some rainfall in here, and we may not actually see that happening until february. at least substantial chances. so with that said, i wanted to show you the reservoir

wait until you see this across the south bay. we are going to get close to 70 degrees tomorrow down here across downtown. i have it at 69 in morgan hill and 68 in milpitas. let's move it over to the east bay right there in oakland. 65, martinez 63 and mid 60s in antioch for the peninsula, 62 in daly city, down towards palo alto. we're at 64, san francisco, 64 across the mission and 61 in the marina. and those light winds continue across the north bay, 67 in ukiah and 64 here in sonoma. so while it's all good right now, what we're seeing is what could be another windy weather set up by the time we get to next week. now, this is still very early out and this all is dependent. every single bit of it on these weather systems developing right where we have them placed on the maps. and current long range models are showing that this could happen for us. unfortunately, with this strong area of low pressure over southern california, high pressure to the north, air flows from high to low pressure. so that would set up this vacuum effect an

did you catch the south bay high school marching band? d the honor of playing in the rose parade yesterday morning. this is cupertino's homestead high. representing the bay area in a pretty spectacular fashion. the group was one of 22 marching bands invited to perform. bands also came from as far away as mexico and japan to take part in the 136th tournament of roses parade in pasadena. they had to get up early, they had to bundle up and, you know, they really represented. they did a great job. they really did. it was nice to see, and it was nice to see a sunny day down there in pasadena, although it's usually pretty nice down there. cynthia for the rose parade. yeah, we're jealous to see all that sunshine there in the warmer temperatures, but hey, it's not a bad start here. look at the beautiful sunrise right now. wanted to share it with you through san rafael. good morning, mom and family up there. hope you enjoy the morning. it's cold though. 43 right there through marinwood. mainly everybody starting in those 40s as we start to recover

that springtime feeling will turn more into winter as we go on into the weekend down here in the south bay, we're going to knock about maybe five degrees 66, in los gatos to 68 down in gilroy, low to mid 60s, where we go from half moon bay to 64 out in dublin, much of the same up there in the north bay. remember yesterday i told you i will watch if we'll issue any wind advisories? well, here it is tonight on into sunday morning for those north bay interior mountains, those gusty offshore winds at times as a new low pressure system comes into the state. so be careful with that, especially on the higher ridge tops. you'll notice more of those high clouds rolling in today. a bit of a gloomy friday, but that's okay if you want to wind it down for the weekend. and here's where your chance of winding it down even more comes about as we track some spotty showers for our saturday afternoon, we notice that counterclockwise rotation. if we do get any showers, they could also turn into a chance of some thunderstorms. we'll try to see if there's any instability and if that develops into a more critica

we've got some mid 60s down here across the south bay over to the east bay. 61 martinez 63, in hayward out to concord, 62 as we move it through the peninsula, 60 in daly city down to palo alto, 63 san francisco staying in the 50s across the marina, then down here to the mission, 62 degrees and up across the north bay. 61 in clear lake, 62 right here in novato. weather really like this as we head all the way into friday's forecast. then hang on for this upcoming weekend. a little bit of a wild ride here. we're going to see this storm system drop in for some of the coldest air of the season. now, the big problem with this and getting any kind of major rain is it's going to be moving over land, so it's just not able to pick up any pacific moisture. so there's only a spotty chance of maybe a few showers here throughout california. we'll also get some wind 15 to about 30. so it's going to feel blustery again this upcoming saturday and sunday. and we're just going to be missing out on those big rain chances and talk about a slow rain season. san jose last day with a quarter inch or more was

absolutely nothing in the south bay. so what? we're just going to be watching extremely closely every day is if that rain line moves a little bit more to the south, our totals would go up exponentially. and i can show you that here friday through sunday, off to the north, riding close to four inches over four inches in eureka. that's where we could have the threat of some flooding. we need every single drop we can get. you can see a rain deficit here through most of the bay area, except for the north bay. on that 7-day forecast right here in san francisco. i've put that spotty chance of rain friday, saturday, sunday and monday. and the same thing here across the inland valleys. it would be good if we got this to move a little bit closer towards us, you know, and we could avoid flooding. so we'll see what happens in the coming days. again, some very important developments we expect through t the next three days. l right. not too low. not too far high. just in the middle. yeah. we need that goldilocks forecast. okay. thanks, jeff.

south bay is going to be the spot to be. oh yeah thanks jeff. up next more tech layoffs in the bay area. why? meta is about to cut a hugchunk ofe i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%. that's something i want to believe. [skateboard sounds] a fire. bombings at uc berkeley. last june, police arrested casey goonan for a series of fires at cal. today, the department of justice says goonan pleaded guilty to a felony arson charge. he admitted to placing a bag of six molotov cocktails under a uc patrol car and then setting them on fire. he also confessed to setting three other fires on campus in june and attempting to firebomb a federal building in oakland. the doj says goodwin's

and with it comes the possibility of sweeps of encampments in the south bay. y in the bay's joe bob redell joins us from an area close to coyote creek in san jose. and bob, many say they don't know where they're going to go. unfortunately, that is an issue for people who live in these encampments, like the one behind me. good morning to you, scott and laura. starting today, the santa clara valley water district can begin enforcing a law that bans camping on valley water land. like the area behind me here where obviously it's dark out, but coyote creeks behind me down the embankment. there are some. there's a tent there or some other encampments behind me. we're just off story road here in san jose. the city of san jose has said these encampments are spilling waste into local waterways, including coyote creek, and they need to go. the encampments need to go in order for the city to be in compliance with the clean water act. a spokesman for valley water says the district is right now not planning to remove any unhoused people by force from the banks of its waterw

temperatures for tomorrow shaping up like this down here across south bay. got you to 61, in los gatos, down towards morgan hill. and gilroy will be in the low 60s and not much of a difference when you get out here to the east bay low 60s, martinez to pleasanton, antioch with some of that fog, though may stay in the 50s with 59 here in my forecast over to the peninsula 62 redwood city up to san francisco. double fives in the marina and for the north bay 62 in santa rosa, 59 in mill valley. let's take you to those rain chances. and i see this starting to pick up for us. once we hit friday's forecast, it will be over the north bay first here friday morning, right around 8:00, we see that rain near guerneville and santa rosa. then it'd be on a move here towards san francisco by 11 a.m. could get into some isolated, heavier pockets. but this thing is moving so quickly, we're not anticipating any kind of big problems. this would be down here towards the south bay by 1:00 on friday, and then it gets out of here friday afternoon and evening. rainfall totals on this

another big concern tonight is coming from businesses in the south bay. some are worried they will start having trouble finding enough workers to stay afloat. nbc bay area's marianne favro is live in san jose with what they're up against. marianne, the concern is that some employees will not show up to work because they're worried about running into ice. agents, and immigration attorneys predict that the hospitality industry, especially restaurants, will be hit the hardest. for some, the sight of ice agents sunday in an east san jose shopping center parking lot prompted immediate reactions. folks didn't want to go to work. folks couldn't get their weekly shopping done. instead of having a calm, restful sunday, folks are sent into panic, worried about their safety and the safety of their loved ones. now, some are anticipating fearful undocumented immigrants working in bay area restaurants and hotels may not show up to work. gene cohen is the executive officer with the south bay labor council. i think the fear is real, and we need to make sure that workers a

that is now starting to expand into parts of the south bay indicated by the yellow there. so once again, we are back in this dry, mild pattern, unseasonably warm for this time of year. in some places like san jose and fremont in the 70s, 60s and many other areas. it is a sunny view, but we are expecting some changes. look at the lack of rain this month. san francisco only 6% of where it should be 19 hundredths of an inch. last time you had rain measuring here was almost three weeks ago. kristen, i'll be back to tell you about the possibility of rain coming up. >> all right. sandhya. thank you. the state public utilities commission is considering a change that could raise the cost of watr for about 2 million homes and businesses. cal water has applied to increase its base rates in each of the next three years. to modernize its water systems, the company says it needs to collect an additional $140 million in 2026 just to keep up with operational costs. the cpuc still has to approve the increases. >> president trump has followed through on another campaign promise, and this o

where we look at normally dry areas that are in the east bay and a little bit of the south bay. the rest of the bay area now no longer in any drought whatsoever. so obviously, this is moving thing, right? when we look at our drought conditions and we want to make sure that we're getting some of that rain as we roll through our season. but at least for now, we're gonna put a pause on that after this friday system. so that will bring a little rain to us. a little snow to the sierra and then the ridge builds in. and now you start to see any weather just going to shoot right over the top of us. so it is going to be a little bit of a dry start to the new year, except for that friday blue skies out there so you can get out and enjoy it at least and make the best of it. temperatures pretty nice out there, too, are sitting in the 50's in most spots. san jose is already made it to the 60's. when does nice and calm and as we take a quick look here at your seven-day forecast, you can see what i was talking about. really, it's just that rain on friday and then sunshine. nice temperatures inc

we got some rain down here, still lingering through parts of the south bay.san jose stretching over into north saratoga, parts of fremont as well in the immediate bay, just seeing some light returns from san francisco over on into the tri-valley san ramon and up into the north bay. that activity is winding down and it will wind down as we go on into the overnight hours, too. i'm looking at some really light amounts as most of us are sleeping, getting ready for the day here bright and early. we could be looking at maybe a light dusting of snow still continuing through parts of mount hamilton, so that will be a little change in the scenery down here in the south bay. and look at this. we go on into the afternoon seeing wayore peeks of sunshine compared to what we had today. as that storm moves down and gives the fire relief for southern california. now here's what's still left. we do have this wind advisory for the north interior mountains through about ten tomorrow morning. with those gusts especially up there, mount saint helena at last check at around 50 mil

over in the inland east bay, we're talking about 3536 degrees at livermore and concord down in the south bayn jose will bottom out at about 40, but getting closer to the bay. fremont and palo alto will drop into the upper 30s during the overnight hours and tomorrow's highs 65in san francisco and half moon bay, upper 60s at oakland and san mateo and fremont up to 70 likely tomorrow, and san jose, 71. morgan hill mid 60s for the most part in the inland east bay and mid to upper 60s in the north bay. probably around 69 degrees at santa rosa. now let's talk about that possibility of rain. here's the forecast animation starting at midnight tonight. notice it will be dry and mainly clear through tomorrow and going into friday. but saturday morning, by 8:00 or so, there is a chance of some light rain or sprinkles moving into parts of the north bay and along the peninsula coastline. again, this is we're talking right now about maybe a 20 to 30% probability. and going into sunday, saturday, midnight, sunday morning, still sort of a slight chance of rain before it all fizzles out going into monday. so

struggling to make it in the bay, and it shows many of the unhoused population is they are living in the south bay. that is the end of year assessment, which found nearly 40,000 people are without housing across the bay area. about one quarter are in the south bay across santa clara county, where the rate of homelessness is about 5% higher than one year ago. some advocates say they are not surprised. that's probably even an undercount. there's been there's a consistent number of people that continually get priced out of san jose, and they end up on the streets. there was a lot of people who ended up getting evicted after covid, after the protections ended. the south bay is not unique in having a higher rate of homelessness. in contra costa county, the rate surged by 20% compared to last year. san mateo county is up 15%, san francisco is up 10%. we are talking about this at the top of the newscast. the bay area's commercial dungeness crab season officially underway in san francisco yesterday. fans lined up to receive their share of the very first catch. this is one of the latest ever recent starts

so, 10:00 tomorrow morning in the south bay. there's a chance. you look in the afternoon and some spotty showers begin to rotate back in as we head into the 2 to 4 p.m. time period. a wind advisory goes up for the north bay mountains. right now, it's already up until 10 a.m. sunday. gusts up to 50 miles an hour could see a few outages or tree limbs going down. the other thing that's going down are the temperatures frost advisory for our inland areas. 1 to 9 a.m. tomorrow. numbers down to the low 30s and frost will form. this is going to be the first storm for southern california of this winter season, and they are going to get soaked, as you can see, not just tomorrow, but going into sunday as well. the mountains will pick up snow. the concern here, as much as it will help the firefighting efforts with higher humidity and that rain, there is potential for mudslides. so here's a sampling of some of the rainfall projections. castaic 6000/900 of an inch. altadena 6600 la. about a third and pacific palisades a little bit less than that. i'll be back
