news out of washington, d.c., at this hour police believe at least one gunman has now been contained in a building on the grounds of the washington navy yard. that is in southeast washington, d.c. as many as three shooters have been identified including one in military fatigues. this according to a posting on the website of "the washington post." shortly after 8:20 this morning, three shots were fired inside the naval sea systems command headquarters building on the grounds of the washington navy yard. it's a massive complex there in southeast washington. there are conflicting reports on the number of people shot. a police spokesman saying there are four victims including one police officer. other reports suggest as many as ten, possibly 12 people were injured and a second officer may have been among the injured. those reports have not yet been independently confirmed. now, there are about 3,000 people who work at that complex inside the naval sea systems command headquarters. emergency teams right now are working to provide shelter for all personnel. they will been told quite simply to shelter in place, meaning to stay inside their offices until they've been g

it is literally a fortress in southeast washington, d.c. not far from the capitol, which itself is not far from the white house. as a result, most of official washington has either been notified and responded or is now in some sort of extended or temporary lockdown, including the washington navy yard where there are some 3,000 workers who are housed there. i want to show you some videotape that came in just moments ago, some images you saw live if you were watching. they are of those workers, of those 3,000 people housed inside there since 8:20 this morning, now four hours waiting and wondering exactly what is going on. they came out with their hands raised in the air. do we have that videotape? they came out with their hands raised in the air. here's that video. these are the people that are federal workers simply because if you work in washington, you realize that there are the iconic name tags around their necks. it is a piece of equipment that is status quo in washington. every place you go to now has secure doors and metal defectors. s

the funeral services took place for arthur daniels of southeast d.c. he and his wife had five children. daniels was working for a furniture contractor when he was shot at the navy yard. he was 51 years old. kenneth proctor of waldorf was laid to rest today. he spent 22 years working for the federal government. he leaves two teenage sons behind. kenneth proctor was 46 years old. >>> and now to new developments in the murder of a teenager in prince william county. two more people face charges in the murder of woodridge high school football player kenny diaz. ariel adams and gibre, l guled are now charged. he was stabbed on saturday after diaz confronted her about a friend being robbed. and new at 4:00, a former ups worker will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to killing a mother and daughter. jason scott was sentenced today as part of a plea. their bodies were found in a burning car in 2009. scott is already serving 100 years for a series of home invasions and burglaries. he used a ups data base to target holmes. jackie bensen w

this is a huge area south of here in southeast d.c.re a number of naval operations and law enforcement operations are headquartered. we got reports there were multiple shots fired, maybe as many as three, at that point, and that one person was down. since then our crews on the scene and we have another on the way, tell us that there may have been two people inside and one on the roof who was shot, possibly including the officer. and they have also found a victim nearby several blocks away. there is a metro station nearby, one of the entrances has been shut down, it's been closed. there is an elementary school nearby. that as you might imagine is on lockdown. for the thousands of people who work in the navy yard they have a shelter in place order in effect. essentially they want everyone to stay put. at last word they didn't know where the shooter was. >> tracie potts, thank you for that update. again on a fluid situation out there. we'll continue to monitor this story all morning long and bring you updates as it happens. at least one p

>> i can tell you that right now, security is tight here at the navy yard in southeast washington, d.c.. normally there would be 60,000 employees. only the most essential staff is being let end and that includes the investigators. we saw it for ensign steen -- we saw a forensics team doing their work. as for that security clearance you just talked about that alexis had he was pretty much free to enter and leave as he pleased. this was a security clearance he got because he was working for a company that was subcontracted by another company that was updating the computer system inside the navy yard. that security clearance he had also came from his time in the navy reserve. he was with the navy reserve and that helps you get that kind of clearance despite being discharged from the navy in the end. the question how was he still able to get in and why were no mental problems detected that clearly are now being found out that he had four weeks and months and possibly even years before this incident happened? >> what else is emerging about the gunmen? >> quite a lot. slowly but surely, the

this part of southeast d.c. where we are remains on lockdown. police chief kathy lanier indicated they are still searching for a black male, 40s, 50s, about 5'10." they're being careful to say they're not necessarily sure that he is directly involved, but they want to talk to this -- they want to talk to this guy to either rule him in or rule him out. they're actively searching for him right now. also right now on the ground, adds you can see probably not a lot of activity because a lot of streets here in d.c. also remain closed at this hour. we can tell you that aaron alexis, the 34-year-old man behind all of this allegedly right now in new york. law enforcement at a house belonging to family members of alexis. they are talking to those family members. we also found out according to our affiliate here in the washington, d.c., area, he was arrested in 2010 for discharging a firearm in the fort worth area. so again a picture of this 34-year-old man starting to emerge. we expect that we may learn a little bit more about him at this news conference

we can tell you that the area where we are right now in southeast d.c. in the shadow of nationals park, about two-and-a-half miles from the white house, we can tell you that the lockdown here is being honored. we have not seen a great deal of tourist traffic, pedestrian traffic. the only cars that seem to be going and coming are emergency officials, an ambulance about to pass and also a number of cop cars we have seen go by over the past few hours, oftentimes with the sirens on. we can tell you there have been a number of buses. we have probably seen about 12 d.c. metro buses. some of the buses have been empty. some of the buses have been packed. and they have been packed with people presumably who worked at the navy yard, and also we have noticed folks wearing fbi jackets on those buses, as well. i had the opportunity to talk to one man who just left the navy yard. he was actually going to catch one of those buses, because we're told that officials have given everyone who works there, the navy yard. they have given them free transportation home, no matt

navy yard in southeast washington d.c. just moments ago, the chief of the dc police and mayor gray, the mayor of the city updated us on the very latest. the very latest, at least 12, at least 12 people confirmed dead in terms of injured we were told that at least 10 people are injured, at least 10 people. among them, one d. c. area police officer injured in direct gunfire. the chief told us that other police police officers were also injured but not directly by gunfire. in terms of people being transported to local area hospitals we have heard a number of people have been transported to local hospitals. we have been hearing from local police officials. as for president obama, he has again call this a mass shooting, not very long ago he talked about a number of service members and civilians who served in the navy yard, knowing full well that violence can occur at any time whether serving abroad. but they don't expect for this kind of thing to happen here on base. but of course; that did happen here today. at this point ther
