our chief foreign correspondent richard engel reports tonight from rafah in southern gaza. >> reporter: after a month of bitter fighting, israeli troops finally pulled out of gaza. gazans tried to put their lives back together. markets filled up, fishermen were back at work. so what changed? israel accomplished its stated goal of destroying hamas' tunnels. and just in time. because washington was losing patience as palestinian civilian casualties mounted. hamas, after a month of punishment, realized it was nearly without friends in the region, especially egypt, its arab neighbor and former ally. this is gaza's crossing into egypt. throughout this war, hamas' main demand has been to open it. it's still closed. hamas has enemies in israel and in the military led government in egypt. egypt's president loathes hamas, which is part of the muslim brotherhood. he ousted the brotherhood from power in egypt and has been putting its members in jail. in gaza, as he picked through the rubble of his home today, shadi najar was as angry with egypt as he was with israel. egypt didn't help us, he said

>> reporter: uma the search continues for the soldier as fighting does as well in southern gaza and northern gaza. we're hearing outgoing mortar fire, israeli mortar fire on that part of the strip. it has been an intense fight in the southern part of gaza. that is mortar fire again right there, i don't know if you heard that, after that soldier was according to military officials, captured, abducted by hamas militants. this again, as, we're hearing a lot of action here in, basically here's what happened earlier today. these are 155-millimeter howitzer cannons. they opened fire again after the cease-fire ended when according to military officials hamas militants ambushed israeli soldiers in the southern part of the gaza strip when they came out of one of the tunnels. now these started firing right after that targeting towards the city of rafah, trying to escape, prevent the militants from getting away. two soldiers were killed during the ambush. again the search resumes for that third soldier. and as i mentioned, we're hearing outgoing mortar fire hitting the northern part of gaza strip. you

and karl reported they heard two sounds in southern gaza. they can't confirm what it was. but that's what they're hearing. and also we know that the israeli military announcing that they are moving to defensive positions outside of gaza. what are you seeing or hearing there from your vantage point? >> reporter: it's quiet here. and we've heard from the israeli military just moments ago that the cease-fire is holding according to the military spokesperson. so that's what we're hearing here. it's been, what, an hour and ten minutes since the cease-fire was supposed to be in effect. of course oftentimes both sides pound each other just before the cease-fire goes into effect. but there is a lot of hope that this one is going to hold. it is different from the last couple that we have seen. of course the ones where one side decided not to join in on the cease-fire, no one expected those to last. but the last couple where they had, for example, a 12-hour cease-fire that didn't work. there were still israeli boots on the ground. and hamas always saying if there's any combatants on
