see, starbucks? that's me thinking an idea through. that's how you should do it, starbucks. if you thought their campaign couldn't get worse, it did. starbucks published an 8-page questionnaire and factoid pull-out in the march 20th edition of u.s.a. today, which means all across the nation, guests at the holiday inn express are calling the front desk saying, "uh, i think you accidentally gave me a copy of ebony magazine." (laughter) i think we actually have a copy. this is it. so let's go through this thing. page one announces "race together." very nice. so far so good. the font is bold but not offensive. c.e.o. howard schultz has been hosting a lot of town hall meetings to talk with employees about race. that's great, because nearly 40% of starbucks employees are minorities. this gives minorities an opportunity to talk directly to the c.e.o. about how they're treated and make suggestions on the way things could be better. page 2 shows a photo at one of the town halls. let's see, i can make out about 30 people in that photo and i see one blurry brother. you have to understand, starbucks had three stores in 1982.ut the core business was selling pounds of ground and roasted coffee for home use. a year after i joined the company, i went to italy for the first time. of course, you can't walk through any major city or town in italy without running into a coffee bar. and seeing the sense of community and romance around espresso. it just made me realize that starbucks perhaps was not in the right part of the coffee business. that the real business and opportunity was the integration of the beverage into creating a destination and sense of ommunity in the store. what i experienced in italy was something that was transferable n the u.s. bring for the first time great coffee, introduce new beverages that nobody has heard of. nobody had heard of a café latte before. i raced home to talk to the founders about the experience i had. and they rejected it. over a period of two years, i left starbucks to start my own chain of italian coffee bars. at that time, starbucks found itself in financial difficulties
