that's where we'll find "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang. ephanie, the city could give them the green light to use public stops. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura. the city gave the approval for this pilot program back in january this year, but it's hosting a panel hearing today. if you've been in san francisco, you've seen these buses come up to stops like it one on mcallister using them to pick up and drop off workers. the city today is holding again a public hearing wanting feedback about 80 stops in particular across the city that the shuttles could use. apple and google use these tech buss to get workers to and from in san francisco. so far the shuttles have been utilizing these for free. now the pilot program would charge them 1 per stop per day. estimating getting $1.6 million for the city every year. two weeks ago the city environmentally cleared shuttles using 20 or so other top stops. some would mean converting that to shuttle loading zones. the agency says these shuttles eliminate at least 45 vehicle miles and cut down

stephanie chuang joins us live. nothing to do with tech companies from california but something else that is near and dear to san francisco. >> good morning to you. we're outside the headquarters of the commonwealth club of california on market street which set up the event and the governor not getting the most attention from energy independence or economics, but from topic of homosexuality comparing it to alcoholism. homosexuality came up as a topic at the texas republican party convention last week and at the time the party adopted a platform that would give people access to reparative therapy and that's intended to change someone's sexual orientation from gay to straight. last night the governor reportedly said he didn't know if the therapy actually worked. he did tweet a picture of his talk in front of last night's crowd and next to him the interviewer had asked him according to "the chronicle" if perry believes homosexuality is a disorder. the texas governor replied whether or not you feel compelled to follow a

"today in the bay" stephanie chuang joins us live from the golden great bridge, stephanie, it sounds like a carved out smaller amount. how much are we talking here? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, sam, it does sound small. it is $7 million to go towards what's a $76 million brojt here at the bridge, but it's kritd call founding we're talking about. now if you're been to the bridge here, you know that the sidewalk are open to the public and the railing in place is only four feet tall. this project could build stainless steel nets 20 feet below the sidewalk. now the golden gate bridge highway and transportation districts board of directors approved this project four years ago after years of testing this barrier system. but construction not begin until funding is secured. according to the bridge rail foundation which is a group dedicated to preventing suicides at the golden gate, there've been 1600 suicides to date there which is more than any other place in the world with record 46 people dying after jumping off the bridge last year. bridge workers were able to stop 118 others. at lea

mike inouye is looking at traffic impacts, but let's begin with nbc bay area's stephanie chuang, with new details on that investigation. stephanie? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, scott and laura. the chp says it started at about 3:00 in the morning in oakland, when two officers there spotted this bmw, ran the plates, and found it was reported stolen just two days ago, actually out of san francisco here. now, the chase was relatively slow to start, 50 miles an hour, but by the time the driver hit the bay bridge and then this off-ramp, he was going more than 100 miles an hour, hit a barrier, spun out, and then ended up right here closer to the side street before catching fire. a ball of fire enveloped the 1999 bmw convertible, with one person, the passenger, still sitting inside. the body burned so badly, police are unable to say if the person was a male or a female. the driver, a man, was lying a few feet away. police don't believe he was wearing his seat belt when he crashed this car. the chp says he had been going more than 100 miles an hour down the fifth street off-ramp, a straig

stephanie chuang is live in oakland. this accident comes as the mayor is seeking re-election. >> reporter: that's right, scott. good morning to you. and so this minor collision yesterday could turn into a pretty major political problem for her. and witnesses we spoke with say regardless of whether she was on her cell phone, it appeared it was the mayor who ran that red light. but officially it appeared oakland police headquarters have to determine who was at fault. cell phone video shows the aftermath that shows mayor quan checking on the people in the other car. a woman and a 14-year-old boy. police say the mayor was driving alone in her suv on market when her car collided with a nissan on 26th street. this happened at 5:30 in west oakland. they didn't cite the mayor. this comes days after photos surfaced of her talking on her cell phone while driving. the issue is who had the right of way in yesterday's crash? witnesses say they believe it was the mayor who was at fault. >> i don't know if she had been distracted or no

stephanie chuang "today in the bay." >>> well, this morning police officers in las vegas desperately are searching for answers following the senseless killings of two of their own. authorities say is a man and woman went on a shooting spree yesterday before taking their own lives. damian trujillo has the latest on this investigation. damion they were just having lunch. >> reports from las say say the couple may have belonged to a white supremacist group. police say the couple entered the restaurant and targeted the two police officers. as you mentioned who were just having lunch. the officers were shot at point-blank range. reports also say one of the suspects yelled quote, this is a revolution before opening fire. the suspects reportedly took the officers' guns and ammunition and ran across the street to a walmart before police say they killed an nentinnocent bystander inside the door. when reinforces showed up there was a suicide pact between the suspects. both are now dead as police struggled to explain the chaos. >> it's a tragic day. it's a very very difficult day. but we still

stephanie chuang is live where the meet willing get under way in hours. this could lead to changes. >> reporter: that's right, laura, good morning to you. it really could. san francisco general here is the only level one trauma center serving this area. the city and county of san francisco and this of course is where all the victims of the asiana crash underwent critical trauma surgery following that tragedy. doctors telling us at the time that this was the first time the hospital experienced a multicasualty incident of this nature and magnitude. i was actually here that weekend when trauma surgeon dr. margaret gave the very first update. she said it was well organized at the hospital. she described how four rooms were going nonstop at the same time with surgeries upon surgeries for different victims. the doctor described that while she and her very experienced trad ma team were used to seeing different kinds of injuries, that the asiana crash victims presented a different pattern of injuries. ones they hadn't seen before, head trauma, spine fractures, an

stephanie chuang is live in freemont, where could there be extra eyes on the road soon? >> reporter: good morning, sam, we are along mission boulevard in the south part of town between 680 and 880. popular stretch of roadway. you can see behind me there are red light cameras here at this intersection, but you could see more cameras at intersections like this one if the city leaders approve a plan that's been put forth by the fremont police department. this would be on 24 hours, seven days a week and would be facing the roadway could capture you, your vehicle, as well as your license plate information. now police here in fremont expressed the importance of cameras in recent years. and even in the last few months have just started to do workshops to help home and business owners enhance their security camera systems. and also have asked people who live and work here to register their own sur varnls camera systems with the department so that officers know where to look if there's a crime. they know where to go for footage. so this would be the second time in just about nine

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live at san francisco city hall where a public meeting on this issue will take place later this morning. stephanie, these shuttles already got the green light to use some of these stops. >> reporter: right, good morning to you, laura. that approval came earlier this year to test out the pilot program for 18 months. we're talking about the tech giants for apple and google using so-called tech buss to shuttle workers from the south bay to the peninsula to san francisco using muni bus stops like this one in mcallister across city hall. this has been going on for years for free. the pilot program would charge them 1 per stop per day. it would get about $1.6 million for the city each year. the municipal transportation administration holding a public hearing this morning to get feedback about 80 stops in particular across san francisco that the shuttles could use. some take away parking and converting the loading magazines. the shuttles are good because they eliminate at least 45 million vehicle miles and 760,000 metro tons of carbon each year.

nbc bay area's stephanie chuang is live at city hall. stephanie, what's the reaction so far to asking these companies to pony up some cash? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, kris. i would say mostly opposition so far. there are about 50 to 60 people packed into the room here on the fourth floor of city hall. and it will be a pretty long meeting. people are able to go up to comment on each of the 80 or so muni bus stops and voice their opinions. so it could take a little while. we've has residents talking about how it will be noisy, we've had business owners say it's going to take away business, because some of the shuttle zones will take away parking spots. this 18-month pilot program would charge tech companies $1 per stop per day, a move that would total $1.6 million, money that would go back to fund the program. the reaction to this move, mostly divided. every 20 to 30 minutes here at 18th and delores, another one pulls up. so-called tech buses. this one, a g-bus. google's way of shuttling workers from the city down to its office

that's where we find "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang.firefighters are worried about the flare-ups, out there overnight. >> reporter: the good news, no flare-ups overnight. but that is always top priority in concerns. that's why oakland fire has staffed one engine with four firefighters like this one right here here along park boulevard where the fires were happening yesterday. these crews have been taking turns three hour shifts coming out to check for embers and trying to see down the canyon 250 feet. we followed firefighters as they used flashlights to check for problem areas, checking up on a hose line set up yesterday that runs into the canyon. first two fires sparked around 2:00 yesterday. within half a mile of one another along park boulevard. total of five in two hours though fishes say the two smallest could have been sparked by em bars. not sure the other were accidental. firefighters were able to put out the fires in a couple of hours but add there wasn't much wind which grows suspicion it might have been a case of arson. one w

. >> nbc bay area's stephanie chuang is live in downtown san jose. what's the mood there? >> reporter: well, you know what, it's mixed. it's good because the u.s. is advancing. of course, the team lost, so not the outcome everyone wanted here. but the room was absolutely packed today. the maximum capacity is 600. it was wall-to-wall here. now, here people are still hanging out, having fun with their friends and family. you know, again, a mixed reaction, very loud in here. you know, i would say, a good way to describe the atmosphere here is there was a lot of drama. every kick, every pass, the corner kicks, there was attention and reaction. one of the biggest reactions, of course, was this moment. yeah, that was, of course, when germany scored that one and only goal of the game. that was in the 54th minute. fans were definitely hurting a little bit after that point. but still hopeful. we do want to show some video of when the u.s. did have some chances in the final minutes of the game. again, this was just when it was already past the 90-minute mark, the u.s. had, in fact,

stephanie chuang is at the airway and it sounds like the ntsb thinks this was not just one mistake, but a series of errors that led to this deadly crash. >> reporter: a cascade of errors by the three pilots. we're standing here where a year ago, almost a year ago, the wreckage was in plain sight. the seawall, where you see planes getting ready to take off from landing, where the crash happened. the underlying point here is mistakes made by the pilots, including overreliance on automated systems they didn't really understand, leading to confusion and a response that came too late, resulting in three people dying, another almost 200 injured. this was the first deadly crash involving a 777. the ntsb concluding that the probable cause involved overall the flight crew seasoned with a good safety record mismanaging the airplane's descent during the final approach, the complexity of the auto pilot and throttle systems, both insufficient description in boeing's manuals and asiana's training. the ntsb put together 30 findings altogether. most of them focusing on the flight crew. the three pilots
