"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live from the scene this morning, stephanie, the roads are still closed this morning? >> reporter: that's right, good morning, laura. almost nine hours later, and the intersection here still closed. of course the hope is they'll get this back open before the traffic builds. you know capitol expressway gets very busy. county workers are trying to clean up the debris. at one corner, there is a pile including a tire, car door, and this is all from a crash involving ten vehicles, police say 20-year-old driver was driving here on and run this red light, hit another red light. it's already been replaced this morning, then that car rolled over several times hitting several other vehicles. police say the driver tried to actually run from the scene, but it didn't take long before police caught it him. meantime, the black mercedes sedan went up in flames with three people still inside. we spoke with a man that says his car crashed into him. other witnesses tried to help other guys still stuck in the mercedes. >> when i got off my car, the guy was -

stephanie chuang is live at the castro station and stephanie nothing running where you are. >> reporter: exactly, good morning to you, scott. service usually starting at 5:00 in the morning. we just got an update from the sfmta which says the power out saj not fixed. what that means is they are running the metro lines to church street station from there it picks up with shuttle bus service all the way to the embarcadero street station. again, could be a serious impact this morning. we did get video this morning around an hour ago when a second truck pulled up. we saw at the junction where crews are working to restore that power lines for the inbound lines. we were unable to see the work because it is an underground tunnel. it's right by the safeway if you're familiar with the area. so you have the jew da and j church lines that meet there. they meet with the k, l, and m lines. this means none of the lines are getting past church. you can't get to downtown, montgomery through to the embarcadero. again they're running shuttle bus service. so from the church street station to the embarcade

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live by the scene. the driver has been arrested? >> reporter: that's right. the driver, arrested. not sure for what yet, involved in the crash. he's okay, after cleared at the hospital. to give you perspective where we are, this is off of 680. this is burnett avenue, north of willow. here the driver was on the on-ramp going to northbound 680 when he lost control. you can see he went over the bank here, into the chain link fence, smashing into two infinity vehicles here, two g-37s, pre-owned, certified. one completely damaged in the back here. actually part of his bumper still on the floor here. not just a messy scene but a loud one. [ horns ] >> reporter: you can see, it was a honda sedan of some sort, flipped over, completely. the car horn going off for some type. the car was righted. chp cleared the scene by 4:15. pretty quick here. the drive ar per appeared to be. back of the ambulance talking, answering questions with paramedics. we heard he was cleared at the hospital and then arrested. back here live again, you can see the deb

that is where we find "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang. nie, you dauk to people who had to run for their lives. >> reporter: good morning, sam, we talked to people who were definitely in a panic because it was a very chaotic scene as you can imagine. we are here where there are firefighters on scene, but they can't do very much because as you can see, it's dark. they're waiting for the sunlight so they can actually do some investigation. the case is still up here. and you can see that a door is off, the debris is outside, but this from over in the street area, you can't see how bad it was in the back, and that's where it all started. the fire quickly grew into a four alarm fire. oakland firefighters said the flames started in the outside area behind a bait shop spreading up to the attic and all around neighbors units. despite the fire, they had to change the heavy smoke, cut in through apartments to put flames out. witnesses telling us is started around 10:45 last night. investigators add over and over again, people said they heard two bang

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live at the police department this morning. stephanie, it was this man's job that has investigators extra concerned. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, good morning, laura. he worked as a handyman for homes in the same neighborhood where he lived. even police say he has no criminal record, 43-year-old is behind bars at the jail in san jose in the $300,000 bail. police arrested him friday for lewd and lascivious acts with a child. after two sisters, seven and ten years old told their parents he touched them inappropriately. detectives say he molested them during the course of several days as he worked as a handyman at moffett mobile home park. they believe he lurid the girls to a secluded area, separately, and touched them. at the time the girls were being cared for by another family member, not their parents. neighbors describing him as a religious man. some surprised by the news, others saying they had always thought there was something off about him. >> if you see someone walking around and they just start saying god bless you a

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live by the vigil. stephanie the family is also planning to file a civil lawsuit against the city. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, sam. it's a full day of action. begins with the vigil you just describinged. we've seen a few people show up already, it's probably going to start a little bit past 5:00 right now. there's a sign here posted about the vigil, and about what's supposed to happen here today. it was here at the park, five months ago, march 21st, friday night, when police got a call about a man pacing near a bench with his hand rested on a black handgun on his hip. police chief greg says at 75 feet away, officers asked him to show his hands before he pointed what they believe was a well at them. officers fired multiple rounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene. turns out, he had a taser stun gun on him. later police learned he was not allowed to legally own a gunl because of mental health issues. the 28-year-old san francisco native had no criminal record. the justice for the group s

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live by the crash scene. it's interesting, though, stephanie, the police arefed the girl's aunt. >> reporter: that's right. good morning to you, laura. it was that aunt who witnessed the horrifying scene. police say 25-year-old lorysah gage was with two kids when she was crossing mission street this way against the pedestrian signal, left mi'yana to get the twin brother and that's when the girl was hit and killed by the car that kept on going. the memorial here is sizable, with many stuffed animals, candles, flowers, bal lines, pictures in memory of the little girl. family members were passing out flyers about the hit-and-run. they said gage had just taken the kids to watch teenage mutant ninja turtles and it was after that when the girl was killed in the middle of the street. now the family coping with the loss of one loved one and dealing with another one, the aunt, behind bars in san francisco county jail, booked on felony child endangerment. >> a tragic incident, emotional, as you can imagine, with the arr

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live at the church street station. stephanie, good news, muni is giving an all clear on this. >> reporter: exactly, good morning, scott. different picture from the last time we checked in here at church street station. it was packed with about 50, 60 frustrated riders. now as you mentioned that trains back in service as of about 156 minutes ago. everything returning to normal schedule. power has been restored. but for most of the 5:00 hour this morning, you had the training stopping here. inbound where people had to walk up to catch shuttle buses to the embarcadero station. a lot of these lanes converged. ultimately causing the outage. now again, good news, it's over now, but the problem already pushed some people behind this friday morning, including people we spoke with whose work involves the stock market. >> for you. >> well the market opens at 6:30 our time and we have to be there about an hour ahead of time to be prepared. every minute late is just pushing that further behind to get ready for the opening. zbloi a

stephanie chuang live along the avenue this morning, steph, drivers aren't the only ones happy about this. >> reporter: yeah, just a little bit, understatement. good morning, scott and laura. what warren and cada, quite a bit of people use caddo and warren as a connecter. that wasn't possible up until this weekend actually. the closure has hurt a lot of people including business owners who say they had a lot of people cut off. the road here on warren avenue goes down underneath bart track. this will be bart's access through fremont. the valley transportation authority held a soft opening of one lane in each direction saturday night. for 14 months, drivers had to rely on mission boulevard to get between 680. the bart extension will connect south fremont to the stations. the closure has led to traffic gridlock which the mayor of fremont had to deal with himself. >> i ended up going probably about ten times further than i used to go around to get there. with warren there, you cut it off. >> reporter: and the city is paying for part of the project. that's supposed to enhance safety, help

nbc bay area's stephanie chuang joins us at the federal courthouse in san francisco. stephanie, it's kind of a standard hearing, but there are so many co-defendants involved and such a famous case that everybody's pay attention to it. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, scott. that's what made it so interesting being inside that courtroom. leland yee and his attorney walked in about five minutes before the judge did. he looked more grim than last time. he sat next to keith jackson, that's the former san francisco school board president. the two are accused of racketeering, exchanging political favors or offering that in exchange for bribes. the judge walked in, and then you had a line of about eight people, defendants who are in custody, handcuffed, walking out. you could hear the jingling of that. and then you had almost 30 attorneys line up to speak to the judge and represent who they were and who their clients were. it was very interesting, scott, that's for sure. today really boiled down to three issues, the judge wanted to talk about one, wiretapping. he was

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live, stephanie, what course of action is the family nowthis morning? >> reporter: there's a lawsuit involved today. good morning to you, sam, we're at the sunrise ceremony vigil that's wrapping up right now with 40 to 50 people. they are in the middle of a prayer. they are going around talking, half hour of aztec dancing and a booud igs chant because 28-year-old was buddhist. his parents are here. they did not want to talk to journalists here. it was five months ago here at bartle heights park when police responded to a man who may have a firearm. police officers got here and told him to put his hands up and said that instead, he pointed what they thought was a firearm at the officers, and that's when they opened fire. he was pronounced dead at the scene. turns out he had taser stun gun on him. he was a security guard at city college of san francisco. this morning, we spoke with a woman who worked with him at city college who says the family five months later is still fighting strong to get some answers. >> this afternoon at noon we'll be

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live from the scene this morning. stephanie, do you know if alcohol played any role in this crash? >> reporter: hey good morning, laura. we do know that police say the preliminary investigation shows that alcohol and speed were a factors in this crash. you can see almost eight hours later, and this intersection, capitol expressway still closed and at the heart of this police say was a black mercedes you see in the distance. it's getting ready to be towed away. san jose police officer in the area saw the driver of that mercedes speeding eastbound on o'colla. it was running a red light here. broadsided another vehicle. the mercedes rolled over several times hitting several other cars and a light stopping in the middle of a lane on o'colla. the driver got out and started to run. officers did catch that person. meanwhile, three people were trapped inside the mercedes as it started to go up in flames. check out the images posted on the san jose fire department twitter. firefighters were able to put out the fire and extra da

stephanie chuang is live outside of the two story building. witnesses tell you they heard loud bangs before the flames erupted. >> reporter: that's right, investigators now have to figure out of course the cause of this fire. there is one investigator and some firefighters on scene, but they're waiting for sunlight so they can better look at the toefd pinpoint the cause. we also have some folks here who were called by the property manager to take a look at what needs to be done to secure the building. they're using flashlights to look at the building. this started as a one alarm fire. you can't see the back from the street and that's where the flames were spreading. they quickly grew and grew into a four alarmed fire. oakland firefighters ducked through thick black smoke pouring out of a doorway, chain saw a gate to gain access and cut in through apartments to put flames out. witnesses say they first heard a couple of bangs followed by a pop or boom niez noiz, then started seeing the smoke that was around 10i 45 last night. seconds later they

stephanie chuang joins us live with what witnesses are telling us this morning. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: hey laura, good morning, yeah happening close to one another. the one sunday night two nights ago was down this block here at the end of the shopping plaza. last night here, you can see some of the remnants of the flairs that were set up here on the street. you have the first hit-and-run sunday night leaving one man dad and last night one man fighting for his life. his father was on scene, distraught as one police officer helped him to sit down. this hit-and-run happened around 8:15 last night in front of the a popular shopping plaza here with many vietnamese businesses. witnesses rushed to call 911. one says it appeared the driver involved was going to stop. >> big bounce, i turn over, saw a guy flying over there, and i saw the guy stop with the white car, after that, he took off. >> reporter: this is again the second hit-and-run on this stretch of center road. just before 10:00 sunday night, police say a black sedan hit 51-year-old man of san jos

stephanie chuang is live at the sustain. you smell fuel, there's a spill as well? >> reporter: yeah. you can smell it more when you're closer to where the boat is submerged half way there. good morning to you scott and laura. we understand the coast guard got the call around 3:30 that a man on the small fishing call made a disstressed call saying that he was going to jump ship. two and a half hours later, still no sign of that man who apparently jumped his boat. firefighters responded with a rescue boat. the coast guard has a helicopter as well as a rescue boat searching for many man right now. you can see as josh zooms in closer where the boat is. there's a red flashing light, it is half submerged. to the left it's more difficult to see, it's a flashing white light. there's a beacon with a life raft. that was not there when firefighters first got here but they searched the boat as well as that life raft. no person found. they also thought they had found someone near the cliff house. they had to cancel an ambulance because that was a beach goer. right now of course

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us at the federal courthouse in san francisco. steph, he is a pretty standard hearing, but it's important because it involves so many defendants. >> reporter: that's right, good morning to you scott. we heard of leland ye and raymond shrimp boy chow, but there are 27 other co-defendants in the case. the judge will encourage defendants to settle their cases. we are talking about the smaller items, not the case of suspended say the senator leland ye who is accused of trying to get bribes in exchange for political votes. he was trying to get money after his failed bid for san francisco mayor. he was in court last week when he was slapped with a new charge of racketeering. inside the courtroom, lawyers speaking for him pleading not guilty to racketeering as well as corruption and fraud. outside as he tried to get away from journalists, ye said only this. >> i need to talk to my attorney. >> reporter: and the latest additional charge of racketeering could prompt the co-defendants to talk in exchange for plea deals. one conviction carry

stephanie chuang joins us now live outside of williams's hoes this morning. it's -- home this morning. it's hard to believe. >> reporter: it is hard for people to squall throe news. in just a few hours the sheriff's office will release more details on what happened in the hours before robin williams died here at his tiburon home where you do see of course the growing memorial of mostly flowers. there are candles, notes that say robin, you will be missed. this is where paramedics were called yesterday afternoon for reports that he was not breathing and pronounced dead a short time later. he took his own life investigators say. all day yesterday and overnight, fans paid their respects including some who came to say good-bye. >> he has helped me out, he's been a role model for me. favorite actor. he's made me laugh, smile, growing u up watching his movies. i really thought that he was something that i had to do, you know, just for closure. >> just seemed like the only -- >> reporter: robin williams's daughter released this quote about her father. starring respon

nbc bay area's stephanie chuang has new details on the investigation, live in hayward. and stephanie, is there a criminal investigation underway here? >> reporter: it's a possibility. and that's what police here in hayward are taking a look at here. good morning, sam, to you and to kris. this is the industrial overpass where it all began before 5:00 this morning. a man only described as in his late 20s was here, but somehow he ended up in the far right lane of southbound 880 here in hayward. the question for investigators now is, was there someone else here on the overpass with him and was there foul play? the chp got reports of a body laying o ing oing on the roadwa5 this morning. the driver of a big rig felt a vibration and pulled over. traffic control officers got here, saw the body, and blocked off the two right lanes of the 4 as well as the on-ramp on to southbound 880 as investigators tried to collect evidence. chp responded, but hayward police have taken over because of the chance that something criminal took place on the overpass, which is the city's jurisdiction

in concord, stephanie chuang, nbc bay area news. >>> and turning now to our microclimate forecast, where we've seen rain for a second straight day. here's a live look over san jose, where the raindrops are going, but are they going to return? meteorologist rob mayeda, this is a rare summer storm. >> rare for this time of year, late july, august. normally the driest for the bay area. that hasn't been the case the last couple of days. right now, we're in the 70s, but rain totals very impressive. the north bay, almost under a quarter inch of rain. enough to wet the ground in parts of the east bay. earlier again this morning, that system that brought us the rain for your morning commute, now driving down the central coast, as we transition to a pattern that's going to take the showers out of the forecast, partly cloudy skies, like we're seeing right now. temperatures today, climbing into the 70s and 80s, but as this pattern begins to change, we're going to get a taste of some valley heat coming back to the seven-day forecast. so the rain has moved on, temperatures on the rise. have a look at

in san jose, stephanie chuang, nbc bay area news. >>> happening now, hundreds of people are out of their homes this morning, pushed out by flames burning near yosemite national park again. the junction fire started yesterday and has already burned more than 1,200 acres of grass and trees. at one point, 13,000 homes were in the line of fire, but that's now down to 500 at this hour. a number of hotels in the town of oakhurst about 16 miles away from the fire are also under investigation order. right now, firefighters are still trying to stop the fire from spreading. >>> now to the latest developments in ferguson, missouri, for a tenth straight night, chaos erupts. police say a small minority of agitators are causing the street protests to escalate into violence. in some cases, shooting at officers and throwing bottles and molotov cocktails. nbc's leanne gregg is in ferguson with the very latest. >> reporter: another night of chaos on the streets of ferguson. >> you need to continue moving! >> reporter: what started as peaceful protests turned into confrontation with smoke and gunfire filli

nbc bay area's stephanie chuang is live there with the latest now. what a mystery, steph. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. good morning to you, kris. first of all, i want to stress that in marin county, investigators say they are not searching for any suspects, that there's no reason for neighbors to believe that they are in any danger. and that this seems to be an isolated incident. you can see here on carlot, a circle that they are still here on scene. i will say that our chopper was over the scene earlier this morning, and while we will not show you those images, we can tell you we saw images of a man with what appeared to be a firearm between his legs. around 7:30 last night, deputies responded to a 911 call from the residents at 151 carlot circle saying a family member was down in the backyard. when deputies arrived, it was determined the man was already dead. he had been shot at least one. investigators went door to door and found that a next-door house had an open side gate and they found another man dead in that yard. we spoke with a neighbor

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live at the scene. brand-new cars are totalled. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. we're standing by the on ramp to northbound 680, you can see where the driver lost control and went over this bank into the chain link fence and smashed into the brand-new infinity cars. the one, sustaining the most damage, the trunk smashed. you see a bumper from the car that flipped over with all of the glass and debris everywhere. not just messy scene, but a loud one. [ horn ] >> reporter: so, the car was some sort of civic or honda sedan that flipped over. it's just before 3:00 this morning, the car horn going off for quite a while. chp able to clear the scene quickly. the drive ar peered to be a young man, by himself in the back of the ambulance. he looked like he was fine, talking to paramedics and seemed like he was doing okay answering questions. we understand now, getting confirmed, he was taken to the hospital to get checked up. back here live, you see the glass flew quite a bit. debris everywhere here. pa

nbc bay area's stephanie chuang is live in the city. steph, these two problems happened miles apart, but it turns out almost the same kind of repair, coincidentally. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. good morning to you, kris. where the tree fell in the northeast neighborhood, we just understand now that the streets may still be closed off there. so quite an impact. but the same muni crews had quite a long morning, starting at midnight, when the first problem happened here. a power outage at the junction, which led to many frustrated riders and it didn't stop here for muni's problems this morning. just an hour or two later, and the impacts of this fallen tree in the northeast neighborhood may have been a lot bigger. thankfully, it fell on columbus street at 5:30 in the morning. no car beneath it, no people around. it did, however, take down part of the muni line. they cut off the power before the city's department of public works crew chopped the tree up to take it away. than began the work to get that muni line back up. >> you can see t

nbc bay area's stephanie chuang shows us how alex nieto's family is fighting back against the city. >> reporter: good morning. it was a full day of actions planned by the supporters, family, and friends of alex nieto. you can see here that next is a march for civil rights against police killing, set to take place at noon from bernal heights park here to the federal building. it was five months ago when police say they got the call that someone was carrying a firearm here at the park. they say when they responded, they asked alex nieto, 28 years old, to show his hands, and that instead he pointed what they thought was a firearm at him. that's when officers opened fire, killing nieto. turns out that he was holding a taser gun, and that he was a security guard at city college of san francisco. we spoke with a woman who worked with him there, who says five months later, the family still has not given up on fighting for answers. >> this afternoon at noon, we'll be marching to city hall to re-file a civil lawsuit. the d.a. refused to file the lawsuit that his family put out, because there i

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is now with the very latest developments on this story. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, laura, we did see a quick shot of the live pictures there in ferguson, missouri, where people are starting to prepare for that press conference. some think that perhaps police are releasing it there because some of the people will be sleeping and perhaps to help keep the calm there. however, a lot of developments, good ones really, calm ones, in a town that's been home to four straight nights of silent clashes. even though there were hundreds in the streets, there were no violent confrontations, at least none recorded nor reported. instead of lines of police in riot gear, you had state troopers walking with the protesters in a sign of unity. it is a change some may attribute to the switch in who's heading up the security there replacing the police chief is missouri highway patrol captain ron john. a ferguson resident himself who was borned and raised in the area. here he is talking about the hope the community may keep moving forward.

in mountain view, stephanie chuang, nbc bay area news. >>> and some breaking news. crews are battling a small brush fire near the lick observatory on mt. hammiltonhamilton. it broke out about a hour ago. so far, it's burned about a quarter acre. we're going to keep our eye on this and bring you the latest as it comes into our newsroom. >>> the fremont man accused of breaking into a home, tying up a little girl, and then raping her mother will be in court today. police say jamala morris was wearing a mask when he broke into an apartment and waited for a mother and her daughter to come home. it happened saturday night. investigators say morris was waiting in the girl's room, and when she came in, he grabbed her and threatened her with a gun. when the mother went into the room, morris reportedly tied them both up with duct tape. >> the suspect then pushes the daughter aside and takes the mom and takes her into a different room of the residence. and it's in that room that he forcefully, sexually assaults her. >> during the attack, a relative of the woman came home and c

nbc bay area's stephanie chuang joins us now with more on this developing story. stephanie? >> reporter: good morning, laura. first the police chief was adamant, he would not release the name of the officer after death threats emerged online. but it is something many protesters continue to demand, they said in the name of transparency. >> darren wilson, he's been a police officer for six years, has had no disciplinary action taken against him. >> reporter: this morning, we're learning details on what took place before darren wilson shot and killed 18-year-old michael brown unarmed at the time. just released, these images captured on a surveillance camera in ferguson in the minutes leading up to the shooting. the man in the white with the red cap is the 18-year-old brown. according to a police report, officer wilson was at a call nearby when he got the call for a stealing in progress and was given a description by dispatch of a black male in a white t-shirt that was walking towards quiktrip, another convenience store nearby. the report details a strong-arm robbery at the firs

stephanie chuang joins us live this morning, the suspect had no criminal history. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, laura. no krm history, but police say it's what this man did for a living that has him concerned. he worked as a handy man for the same homes in the same neighborhood. the worry of course is that he may have other victims out there. now 43-year-old ramiro palestos is behind bars. he was arrested friday for lewd and lascivious acts with a child after two sisters, seven and ten years old, told their parents that he had touched them inappropriately. now the alleged acts of molestation happened in the moffet mobile home park here in mountain view. detective say he lured the girls to a secluded area separately and molested them as he worked as a handy man during the course of several days. at the time the girls were being cared for by a different family member, not their parents. neighbors had mixed reactions, recalling what seemed to be the man's very religious nature. >> i can't believe it. i mean, he asked my son, do you believe in god. you know, he looked like he t
