stephanie chuang live from san francisco's international airport to explain how a major storm could be affecting travelers this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you both. it seems it may be impacting some flights. i spoke with the airport manager at sfo who says laguardia in new york city as an estimated 189 minutes of delay for any flights arriving because of the weather. philadelphia another problem area. we've been talking about all morning, an estimated delay of 103 minutes. flight on the board 8:10, supposed to be 6:15, now 6:45. for flights within in or out of the u.s., 500 delays and 300 cancellations and numbers keep climbing. most impacted areas are on the east coast. philadelphia, boston, and new york city. it's expected there will be thousands of delays as the impact of the storms build up. some travelers say they're worried about the flight to the east coast and what will happen once they land. >> my sister's coming down from buffalo. you know there'ses lots of snow and she's going to meet us at jfk hopefully everything works out. >> it's best to change to early flight

stephanie chuang, the witnesses say the boy thrown several feet. just tragic. >> reporter: absolutely tragic. good morning. we spoke with a man who says he lives in the neighborhood, who saw the high-speed chase himself and that the car was a red or burgundy sedan going 50 miles an hour in the 30 mile an hour zone. happened at 6:30. the victim halfway across the crosswalk there when he was hit. impact so great, he flew maybe 40 feet to where you see the bus stop and memorial, the stuffed animal, candles and the latest, a teddy bear on the pole. investigators are spent hours in the ashland area taking away evidence like the scooter that the 14-year-old had with him. this began when police first saw a reckless driver south of ashland. when the driver refused to pull over they began a pursuit. omar saw the chase and his wife stood in the middle of the street to get help from police. he felt compelled to pay respects as a fair father of five. >> for the family that has to deal with this, for the kids, just the person who did this, turn himself in becau

stephanie chuang live in san francisco. do police think the fires were purposely set? >> reporter: good morning to you. so far the answer is yes. these are suspected cases of arson here. we have seen patrol car pass by a couple times to look out for anything or anyone suspicious. one of the fires here at 18th and noe where the silver hatch back is parked. the other a block up the hill at 19th and noe where police and fire responded and saw a tall, newer white dodge sprinter van on fire, next to it a compact car suffered minor damage. but the second case of major damage at 18th and noe, a red, newer model four-door jeep that suffered pretty bad damage. across the street a store, employee there told us he saw the aftermath and also believes the fires were suspicious. >> fire on the bottom of the hill was on the hood, it looked like someone had set it, it wasn't anything from inside the hood area like engine fire or anything like that. the fire department got it under control within ten minutes. they got it under control and taken care of. >> reporter: along those lines h

nbc bay area's stephanie chuang is live outside the meeting in mission bay. stephanie, there were some scuffles between protesters and police yesterday, even an arrest. what is it like now, now that this has been passed? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. good question. it was quiet outside, but definitely got pretty heated inside. 20 minutes ago was when the formal approval came on the tuition hike, and as you can see, again, quiet and empty outside, but inside the protesters were starting to shout things like shame on you, so the regents had to take a recess. students say one thing is for certain, this money should not be coming from them. today a wooden board stands where a glass door used to. outside, campus police officers guard the entrance. inside, a pile of zip ties. preparations just in case another confrontation like yesterday's breaks out. uc police and protesters have scuffled outside the regents meeting. officers took a 21 year old, a cal junior, away in handcuffs. he went straight from mind bars to uc berkley's wheeler hall, joining up to 2

stephanie chuang joins us from the airport where that fight is creating conflict. >> reporter: usually you arrive at sfo, you can get into the taxi line and hop in pretty quickly. not so last night. for a couple hours drivers were protesting, looping around, blocking lanes and not picking anyone up. according to one airport manager, there were up to 100 people waiting for taxis last night causing a traffic backup heading into sfo. the drivers, though, say companies like uber, lyft and side car have been and you fairly taking away their business after they worked out deals last month so they could pick up passengers. they say ride sharing is misleading. >> we have our own app, fly wheel. it's strictly for taxi. basically what they're doing, they're doing exactly the same thing as the taxi industry. so there's no reason why they call themselves ride share because they're not really sharing a ride and they're charging for, you know, to the customer. >> and the drivers add they have to pay things like gate and airport fees. in the agreement with sfo, they did agree to pay a fee of $4 per t

stephanie chuang joins us live from sfo. why the protest now? >> reporter: a good question. uber, lyft and side car are now allowed to drop off and pick up passengers here on the upper domestic level after they just began to legally operate here at sfo with a new deal signed with the airport last month. in protest of the business they say they're losing unfairly, dozens of drivers drove around in a loop in a two-hour protest from 9:00 to 11:00 last night. according to the airport manager, there were up to 100 passengers waiting for taxis last night. >> we have to pay all those expenses, we go through background checks, we have to pay gate, we have to pay the airport and they're not doing any of that stuff. so this is not a fair game, you know what i mean? we're here to fight for our rights, that's all. >> reporter: in the agreement with sfo last month, uber and side car have agreed to pay a fee of $4 per trip or $100,000 annual fee. this is a pilot program to test the new business and how it will impact traffic here at the airport. >> we'll see if there could be further regu

stephanie chuang shows us how the airline is fighting back. >> reporter: good morning. asiana airlines calling this decision too harsh, with one company official saying if the appeal is rejected, the company may take legal action. this temporary route ban could cost the company an estimated $14 million. asiana has been urging the government to issue a fine instead. that carries a maximum of about $2 million, but the ministry of land, infrastructure, and transport issued the suspension to signal a clear warning to ensure safety is top priority. asiana says the government is ignoring the u.s. national transportation safety board findings that concluded it was mainly pilot error that caused the boeing 777 to crash, killing three people and injuring 180 others. the company adding that this would hurt passengers by taking away flight options. asiana says it sells about 175,000 tickets a year with 70% of customers being nonsouth koreans, but the government says it will ask other airlines to increase passenger capacity for flights between san francisco during this 45-day suspe

stephanie chuang is live at the international airport where a brand new way to get between bart and theicks off this weekend. >> good morning. travelers especially during the holiday season know how every minute can really count. we have this new tram system from bart that replaces the air bart bus service, which averaged 20 minutes, now set to go down to 8 minutes. bart says the fully automated trains go at 30 miles an hour. there are four of these pulled by a series of cables. they say four years after breaking ground this service is well worth the $480 million price tag for its efficiency and push for the future. >> there's nine intersections and traffic can vary from day to day. the reliability should be much greater. >> reporter: and san jose international is trying to provide stress relief by providing adorable therapy dogs. the airport expects to serve 350,000 travelers during this thanksgiving air travel period, which starts today. and that is up from 7% from the same time last year. and in fact triple a estimates there will be 46.3 million americans traveling 50 miles or more f

nbc bay area's stephanie chuang is live in san francisco along one of those picket lines. seems to be a lively crew out there, but is the strike having an impact on patient care? >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. it is very lively out here and so far no major disruption, although this is a two-day strike, a total of 24 hours involving 16,000 nurses. here there are more than 100 nurses and folks with the union out here. you can see the signs, as well. kaiser says it has fill-in nurses, but nurses say they'd rather be inside but have no choice but to be out here to ensure patient safety. >> pressure to hurry, keep it moving. >> reporter: and after more than 40 years as a registered nurse in san francisco, she said she needs more time day to day to help her countless patients in the labor delivery area. >> that need to just rush or hurry can get in the way of us always doing the right thing, and going without breaks. we can't deliver our best because we're all human. >> reporter: she was one of dozens outside the kaiser on gary boulevard. where nurses began walking off
