i remember all the way back to 2016, hillary clinton at the hiring of steve bannon talked about the emboldening of white nationalist and extremist elements within the right. what's the best way to fight against this? >> i think it has to start with the very first step, which is recognizing that this isn't a problem that can only be dealt with through a law enforcement lens. that seeing this as the problem of defined fringe groups, we really miss the vulnerabilities in the mainstream to propaganda, to disinformation, to online manipulation. so we really need a deeper public health-type approach that invests in communities that help people understand what persuasive tactics like scapegoating or fearmongering looks like. and they build their own counterarguments to that and are able to resist it. it's equipping the mainstream with resilience rather than just focusing on risk and security. >> so we're in a new administration and they have a different approach to extremists, so let's take a look at what the biden administration has said about this threat of domestic extremists. >> we are very focuse

like, steve bannon got can his pardon. michael flynn got his pardon. roger stone got his pardon in. the 5th or the 6th. being around people who would, later, commit crimes is, itself, not a crime. but like, doing -- he was around a lot of militia guys who end up storming the capitol. what was he up to those days, do we know? >> i don't think we have seen any evidence, thus far. but i think he is tied, probably, to three separate criminal conspiracies now. like you said, he hasn't been charged in any capacity but he's -- has certain connections to groups -- or three different groups have been charged at least. so i think it's really interesting to see what will come out in a lot of the discovery there. and how -- how closely they are in communication. because the idea you are going around and palling around with all these different groups that were then charged with storming the capitol and were preparing all this and this military gear and had no clue what was going on seemed sort of ridiculous. so i think we are going to have to see what comes down the line. but i think, also, it's

decision on the part of trump's supporters to raise the issues to trump's advantage, look back at steve bannonissing white voters, so they made a conscious decision to engage in white identity politics. what i'm focused on in the books is to say our system incentivizes this because our system allows one party to hold power without all the votes. anything they do to prevent that is justified. banning people on the basis of religion, child separation, laws attacking transchildren, this is a kind of politics of cruelty that is incentivized by a system that enhances the power of one particular party of the electorate that the republican party relies on to win votes. if they had to reach beyond that base, they would become a more moderate party on the issue of democracy. conservatism is never going away but the question of whether or not the leaders that we choose will reflect the will of the people is an existential issue for the country and one that the republican is putting in danger right now with all these election laws that are justified by this politics of cruelty and exclusion. >> lanhee ch
