i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. >> all right, sarah, thank you. california. lawmakers voicing where they stand on prop 36. new poll shows that most of those surveyed stand behind the measure that aims for harsher consequences for drug and theft crimes. kron 4 stephanie rothman joins us in studio with the opposing views from governor newsom and san jose mayor matt mahan. stephanie. >> can governor newsom opposes prop 36 while the mayor favors it. this new poll brings it back into the conversation just less than 2 months away from election day. and a recent poll by the public institute of california. 71% up polar support prop 36 while 26% oppose it, if passed through voters, what set into motion harsher penalties for some drug and theft crimes. the measure seeks to reverse course on looser consequences from prop 47. that's the 2014 voter approved law that changed some felonies to misdemeanors, including retail theft. one, the stolen items are valued at less than $950. while the majority of californians support this. governor newsom says this is not the way the
