"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us from sunnyvale. what's the issue here? >> reporter: so we've seen a number of our bay area public schools close because of declining enrollment. in this case that's not the issue. the issue is a loss of funding. now, the public schools that we're talking about, summit public schools, which is actually a charter school operating on two campuses in sunnyvale, summit denali, they announced plans to close last month. they served about 650 middle and high school students on two campuses. san jose spotlight reports that a letter sent to parents blamed the loss of pandemic-era federal stimulus funds and a loss of state funds because of the displacement of low income families. the county office of education oversees districts and is the body charged with renewing and approving charters in santa clara county. the office of education is not involved in day-to-day operations and has requested summit denali leaders appear before the board. according to a report to the county board of education, the office of education, on january 6th,
