it's just seven miles, and it's now descending into the tahoe basin. it's approaching those areas where there are a lot more cabins, places we've all visited frequently and now looking at it moving closer to the south lake tahoe area as we're getting a stronger wind picking up. we've also had some of that smoke coming into the bay area over the weekend with those spare the air alerts that were issued and now we are seeing still some moderate air quality. these little dots here indicate current air quality sensors showing some moderate air quality for the inland areas. it has been improving for san francisco and along the coast. we're dealing with the fires as well as watching what tropical storm ida is doing over the gulf coast. this made landfall yesterday as a category 4 hurricane. pushing up a big storm surge, that's that big wall of water out ahead of the hurricane. now it's dumping lots of heavy rain as it continues to move those heavy rain bands over new orleans into mississippi and alabama, so this is going to be a big story over the next few day

we are showing folks what it looks like in the tahoe basin right now. worst air quality in the world tonight. >> very similar to what we had in the bay area last september when we had some of the worst air quality in the world. the onshore breeze is keeping the smoke away from us and will keep us with below average temperatures for one more day. but an area of high pressure will be strengthening and as a builds towards us, it will not be a full-fledged heat dome but it will be in inland heat wave. this will turn the mid and upper level winds and send some of the smoke back down toward the bay area. so another day of onshore winds helps the haze in the atmosphere move off to the east. thursday, the wind starts to turn. some of that smoke will try to drifted to the north bay but things won't be bad yet. but the longer those winds say in the offshore or long short direction, the more that smoke will building. this looks bad but it smoking tracking smoke throughout all levels of the atmosphere. it remains be seen how much will be dragged down to the ground.
