it's just seven miles, and it's now descending into the tahoe basin. it's approaching those areas where there are a lot more cabins, places we've all visited frequently and now looking at it moving closer to the south lake tahoe area as we're getting a stronger wind picking up. we've also had some of that smoke coming into the bay area over the weekend with those spare the air alerts that were issued and now we are seeing still some moderate air quality. these little dots here indicate current air quality sensors showing some moderate air quality for the inland areas. it has been improving for san francisco and along the coast. we're dealing with the fires as well as watching what tropical storm ida is doing over the gulf coast. this made landfall yesterday as a category 4 hurricane. pushing up a big storm surge, that's that big wall of water out ahead of the hurricane. now it's dumping lots of heavy rain as it continues to move those heavy rain bands over new orleans into mississippi and alabama, so this is going to be a big story over the next few day

now starting to enter into the tahoe basin, it's going downhill and spreading closer to the lake tahoe, south lake tahoe area. so we've also been seeing a lot of that smoke moving in, but what's going to happen today is our winds are going to pick up. a westerly wind is going to clear out the smoke, but also push the fire around the caldor fire off towards the east and firefighters are trying to get some containment on this now with some new red flag warnings going up for this region. with the wind coming out of the west/southwest picking up to 20 to 35 miles per hour, this fire may spread very quickly as well as the dixie fire zones where we may see some more evacuation orders going up as it spreads in different directions. we do have a lot of concerns there as well as what's now tropical storm ida that made landfall yesterday as a category 4 hurricane, still pushing up a big storm surge and dumping some heavy rain across louisiana, mississippi and alabama. so for more on that let's head over to you now. >> already affecting a big, large area right now. ida as it continues to move alr

the tahoe basin. flames moving into small towns nearby just picking up cabins as it went along and people as they were packing up some of them were leaving on sprinklers on hoping they would have something to come back to. in the last half hour a firefighter told us that south lake tahoe's scenic terrain is part of the issue and part of the reason firefighters can really do little more than watch. >> i wish we could say that attacking it was what western doing. right now we're just kind of following it and trying to protect those that are in the way, move people out of the way. >> these are images from photographer matthew henderson of the fire in the evacuation areas and today there could be more people trying to get out as evacuation warnings are now in effect extending into nevada. the evacuation area past the state line that includes douglas county, though not the casinos there at this point. you may have seen those really long lines of evacuees stuck in traffic trying to leave. it is a good remin

the entire south lake tahoe basin is under evacuation orders. let's take you out to a live chopper video now of the caldor fire. one final ridge stands behind this fire and the entire south lake tahoe region. you can see sun setting near the sierra. the fire continues to burn along highway 50. homes, businesses and other structures are gone. this is a shot near the homes at sierra at tahoe resort. some are gone while others have been saved. and that kind of hopscotching the of the fire line, we've seen this kind of behavior in the prior years. about 20,000 people were told to leave today. here's the latest evacuation map, it includes all the communities up to the nevada state line. if you want to explore this map further, we've posted it on our website. with highway 50 closed in terms of westbound, the main route was highway 50 eastbound. major roads and right there along the highway, major gridlock with a lot of backups throughout the afternoon. >> we knew it was coming. the winds, it just creates its own wind. >> i have a daughter and a son in

fire officials believe they will stop the fire from reaching tahoe basin. tom jensen joins us from south lake tahoe. we look behind you and we can barely see anything. >> reporter: that's right. it's a whiteout. you can't see where the smoke ends and the water begins here on lake tahoe. the fire officials and city officials may be a little less optimistic about the movement of the fire. late this afternoon, lake tahoe visitors authority issued a warning to visitors to stay away. telling the tourists who still plan to come to tahoe to stay away until further notice. that was after talking to fire officials and law enforcement officials. they have been saying, like you said, that they believe they can keep that fire out of the tahoe basin. we did talk to wildfire analysts. they believe it could make its way to the basin within a week. they don't want people to get flat footed if they get -- if they have to evacuate. the smoke is decimating tourism in tahoe. businesses want to know if the flames with coming. >> it's unlikely. >> reporter: this man bases on that

it spread to the tahoe basin. evacuation orders include south lake tahoe.ize and they have thrown everything they possibly can to try to save tahoe resorts in the south shore area. it is still a real crisis that will continue for quite some time. what we are so concerned about are the weather conditions on the fire lines. >> our weather team keeping track of that. >> we had the red flag warning in fight for part of the northern sierra. that does include the calder fire and the dixie fire. we have the winds out of the southwest. they are gusting lola for 20 miles per hour. it's unfortunately, we are going to do this all again tomorrow afternoon. we are going to have stronger winds. that is why calfire is focused on this eastern flank. that is where we are likely going to see the most spread. the effect the winds are having for us, it is clearing out a lot of the smoke. it is much clearer today than it was this time yesterday. air quality continues to improve over the next 48 hours. by wednesday, we are going to get rid a lot of smoke. -- get rid of a lot of

we are showing folks what it looks like in the tahoe basin right now. worst air quality in the world tonight. >> very similar to what we had in the bay area last september when we had some of the worst air quality in the world. the onshore breeze is keeping the smoke away from us and will keep us with below average temperatures for one more day. but an area of high pressure will be strengthening and as a builds towards us, it will not be a full-fledged heat dome but it will be in inland heat wave. this will turn the mid and upper level winds and send some of the smoke back down toward the bay area. so another day of onshore winds helps the haze in the atmosphere move off to the east. thursday, the wind starts to turn. some of that smoke will try to drifted to the north bay but things won't be bad yet. but the longer those winds say in the offshore or long short direction, the more that smoke will building. this looks bad but it smoking tracking smoke throughout all levels of the atmosphere. it remains be seen how much will be dragged down to the ground.

tahoe. meaning it's going down to the basin. this arrow shows you how far it is from south lake tahoe. you think about everything that's in between with a lot of resorts and cabins. we have people living there, and also you think about all of the wildlife in that area as well. seven miles away is not a lot of distance considering that this weeks. and we take a look at some of the cameras where you can barely see anything. but you can see from this camera lake springs that they've put down some of that fire retardant. it's only slowing it down, but we are expecting the weather conditions to become much more unfavorable for us and could cause this fire to spread closer to lake tahoe. so now we do have new red flag warnings up around the caldor fire. we have to consider, too, the dixie fire is burning as well just farther to the north. and so these crews are really stretched thin. and when you see weather conditions like this that will be picking up over the next couple of days, wind gusts coming in from the west/southwest at 20 to 35 miles per hour. and you think about the direction that

nine major tahoe basin forests will close sunday night and reopen september 6. a national parks spokesperson says it's necessary to ensure public and firefighter safety as well as reduce the potential for new fire starts. >>> entering one of the above forests ispunishable by a fine up to $5,000. >>> a live look at el dorado county, the caldor fire. you can see the sky covered with smoke. highway 50 has been closed since yesterday. and part of the reason it's closed is to allow for the emergency vehicles to get through. but now the flames have jumped highway 50 near kibers, we've told you about pollock pines. you can see the smoke coming up, that smoke heading our way eventually. right now the main concern is for the people who live in that area. >> the increase in the wind helped air quality but it's allowed those fires to take off this afternoon. we're seeing that with the caldor fire, you saw from the helicopter view there, the column plume standing out from the smoke surrounding. those are the vertical winds which power up, again, ash that is being picked up

mandatory evacuations are in place for thousands of people in the lake tahoe basin. this is eldorado county. the wide view, as you can see from the nevada border all the way to sacramento. but the heart of the issue here is the south lake tahoe itself. the largest community in the whole time. so tahoe basin with more than 20,001 1000 residents as we zoom into the lake in the nevada border between south lake tahoe and douglas county. want to let you know within the last few minutes, douglas county officials have just issued an evacuation warning for people on the nevada side of lake tahoe that extends all the way from what you're looking at there, the border at state line all the way up the east shore of lake tahoe, too glenbrook. so that includes zephyr cove and those areas up to the washoe county light washoe county line on the east side of the lake. those are evacuation warnings. the actual. real issue is what's happening in that red area on your map. that is where the evacuation order is in effect right now and we'll keep you posted as things progress meantime for
