joining us now is nbc's tammy leitner. she is live at the scene. tammy, what is the latest there? lawrence, sorry, we were moving our shot because yet another person has been arrested. i would say at least a dozen people have been arrested at this point. we've been out here for an hour and a half. and we've seen probably 200 riot officers show up. they formed lines on both sides of the intersection. there were about 300 protesters when we got out here. they were breaking windows of businesses. they were kicking in police vehicles. we saw one police officer get hurt. and he was helped away by fellow comrades. as i mentioned, about 12 people arrested. one more person is being arrested right now. for the most part, protesters have walked up to the line of police officers and not gone any farther than that. but what we can see from our advantage point here is still about 100 protesters on our side. sorry, there is still tear gas in the air. they set off about 12 canisters since we've been here, as well as flash-bangs which are used to stun and disperse the crowd. lawrence? >> tammy, y

i'm seeing tammy there. >> yeah. i also want the folks watching, the firefighters, charlotte mecklenburg, fire on the scanner tonight. they've been busy. they are different in that police are outfitted for this. firefighters are responding to put out fires. they have no offensive weapons. their trucks are not meant as defensive vehicles. they've had to roll through this and around this and they have done it tonight as they did last night. there were pictures of an engine company going right through the heart of the protests responding to a call. they have, as usually, an call large and professional department in this area, 17th largest city in the united states. tammy, can we get an update from your camera location, what you're seeing? >> yeah. brian. so they're at a bit of a stand still. they have not moved forward in the last couple of minutes. there is i would say maybe a hundred riot police officers lined up here. the line goes back a couple deep. there's probably still 75 protesters out here on each corner. one

thank you so much, tammy., an individual, an eyewitness to the explosion itself. we're talking to elizabeth man dell del. are you a resident of the area? where were you when this happened? >> reporter: i was in my apartment on the sixth floor of a large residential building on the corner of 23rd and 6th. and i heard a huge explosion. it almost reminded me of the footage of the planes crashing into the world trade center. i didn't know what was going on at all. at first it sounded like thunder, but then i looked outside and there was no rain. so i got up, i peered outside my window, and all of a sudden i see people running in all different directions, and that's when i knew something very terrible had happened. and within seconds, the police showed up, ambulances, fire trucks, and they were on it. crowd came out of local bars, out of the subway. everyone came out onto the street and was looking around, seeing what there was to do. you know, on the one hand, you know, people were holding their phones and trying

i want to bring in nbc's tammy leitner. she was in the middle of the protests last night. wanted you to wake up early even though i saw you on tv very late last night because you were there in the thick of it. talk me through how tense it was. when you see the police in riot gear, it's scary. >> yeah, you know, stephanie, things escalated very quickly. this started as a vigil. a peaceful vigil at about 7:00, and the protesters then started walking. and they ended up about a third of a mime from where we are right now and around 8:30 is when things started escalating. you saw protesters throwing bottles. you saw them attacking vans, trying to break out the windows. destroying buildings, breaking the windows, actually, i'm standing in front of a broken window right now from last night's damage. >> tammy, when and how did that change happen? when do you go from a peaceful march to throwing bottles, breaking windows, and someone getting shot? >> you know, it escalated. it was very peaceful when they started marching, but when they got to the downtown area, which is about a thi

>> tammy leitner, thanks. depending on the commuter rail line, if you commute by rail may be familiar with these cars where, in effect, every car can act like the front cab. every car has controls in it at both sides. so it gives the train line the ultimate flexibility. there were media reports that the engineer was grabbed from the wreckage alive but dazed. we can only assume that the one fatality, a woman yet unidentified, was in the front car of this train. tammy leitner points out the number of wounded has been hovering about 100 all this morning. we've been briefed by two hospitals. thankfully, though, any injury however minor is one too many. people have been categorized as walking wounded, many of them. cuts and scrapes, yes, but also broken limbs. sadly, a lot of people presenting with shortness of breath and chest pains at the stress of it. as i mentioned, this comes after a period of fear about terrorism and not one but two devices having gone off within that kind of 100-mile radius of new york city.

tammy, thank you so much.. they don't feel that by the police releasing just parts of the video that -- they don't feel like it serves any greater cause. with those people already coming out here believing the police aren't delivering the full truth, it only further cedes that. so far, peaceful of course. when you speak to individuals who as a whole body, you don't get the sense there's something fueling or something seething just beneath the surface. when you talk to the individuals, they believe today's release of the video coupled with the video released by mr. scott's family that it only widens this divide and widens that feeling that something in this police department, something in this case isn't sitting right with folks beyond the killing. there's the speculation and rumors that kind of filled that space in between that transparency so many people were hoping for this. only kind of made the chasm again a little worse. >> tremaine lee there on the ground watching the community reaction. the fifth night.

we want to get to tammy leitner right now. in addition, tammy, to the fatality as well as 100 hurt, the injuries sounded to be pretty serious. >> reporter: yeah, peter. we know more than 100 people were injured and 20 people are still in the hospital today. cuts and bruises, broken bones, some more serious injuries. now as far as the woman who was killed, we now know she is a local hoboken resident. her name is fabiola bittar and she recently moved from brazil. she had just dropped her daughter off at day care. told she always has a smile on her face when she's with her daughter. she had rushedo catch this train and her husband was actually out of town on a business trip yesterday when this accident happened. we're told from the director of the day care, her husband showed up to pick up his daughter and pulled the director aside and said, how do i tell my 18 month old daughter that her mother is gone? just a really tough emotional thing for any family to be dealing with. peter? >> tammy, as tom was talking about a short time a

tammy, thank you for that. new york governor andrew cuomo also weighing in offering his support to the victims. >> the silver lining is that there's only been one fatality thus far, because the destruction really is significant and the power of the train coming in is obviously devastating in its impact. the 100 injured and the fatality and the critically injured, we remember them in our prayers and we hope that there is only one fatality and it stops there. >> msnbc medical contributor dr. john torres is live now outside the jersey city medical center. that is where the victims have been taken for treatment after this crash. dr. john torres, i understand you have been briefed by some of the officials there. what can you tell us? >> the spokesman just came out and gave us an update, and what he's telling us is a total of 66 patients were seen here. that makes sense because this is the highest level trauma area near where the accident occurred. they saw 66 of what they call walking wounded. these were people that

tammy, you with me? >> reporter: yes, i can barely hear you but i just talked to a railroad worker down there. the crash happened on track four. he was walking towards track four and he said he could hear the crash from 100 feet away. he said normally when a train is coming into the station, it's only going 3 or 4 miles an hour. that's why he automatically assumed and asked, did something happen to this engineer? at this point, we still don't know but the train was barrelling in and normally, they go about 3 to 4 miles an hour when coming into the station. and there's also a steel gurney bumper block he described that would normally stop the train if something happened, and in this case, obviously didn't. he described running over to the train and said people were buried underneath rocks. they were carrying people off the train, trying to get people, big people out of the rocks there and said he picked up one girl in 20s. badly injured. describes the injuries as dozens of people severely injured. >> your

tammy says she has ditched eating fast food and is focusing on the fruits and vegetables at the school along with the main dishes. parents who try to keep their kids clean and healthy might want to get them a little dirty. that's according to a new book called let them eat dirt. it was written by a group of scientists. they call it the hygiene hypothesis. scientists say exposing your child to low levels of different germs, viruses, and bacteria will help develop their immune system. it might even prevent allergies or asthma later in life. these same scientists say doctors are seeing rising rates over-sanitizing kids. patrick: target is already calling it quits for child sized shopping carts. the mini carts were in 72 target stores in minnesota and new york. after a month of testing, the idea is over. a spokeswoman says store feedback led them to the decision. and according to a video found on social media, customers may not have liked getting their ankles bruised by kids pushing the mini carts into them. it also hurts when they push the big cards into you. joyce: big blow to the badger

nbc's tammy leitner is near the scene in new york where it all happened. tammy, what's the latest from there? >> reporter: good morning. still a very active scene out here. blocks and blocks to the west and north of me still closed off. there were actually two crime scenes. the explosion happened just about half a block behind me. on friday night, lots of locals walking around here. one described it as a bomb. he ran outside, he knew it was a bomb. he said windows were blown out on both sides of the street. he could see people had fallen to the ground from the explosion and were running. obviously a very scary situation. we're expecting an update here in a few hours. hopefully they'll have more information about that explosion, the device that went off, as well as a second scene where a pressure cooker was discovered. back to you. >> what do authorities know about the surveillance video of a dumpster that may be providing some clues? >> reporter: so last night the mayor came out and he said this was an intentional act. something that may have led him to sa
