tara. >> reporter: yeah. we are here at peacock tree drive and clayton.n. we spoke to officials that were in charge of the ground crew. they said last night the flames looked much, much worse. right now the humidity is higher. once the sun comes up it may flair up again. behind me up on the ridge there is a little bit of a flair up. it does look a little better than it did a half hour ago. we understand just before midnight there are more evacuations in place. people who live on trail ride road. russellman park road have all been ordered out by emergency crews. there are two dozen homes in that spot. earlier last tight we had 50-75 homes evacuated off of oak hill lane. curry canyon road. officials are advising those leaving the homes to take morgan territory road and bring essential items only. they should lock their windows and doors behind them. many people we spoke to said they were scared and surprised by the evacuation orders. not only for themselves but the animals. there are so many horses and livestock in this area. >> most people since they have

tara? >> reporter: yeah. less than an hour ago, the san francisco medical examiner released the name of the victim. he's described as 24-year-old jonathan denver. now, we don't know what city he's from. if he's from northern california or southern california. but we do know that he was wearing dodgers' gear when he was stabbed. now, the police chief told us also that two people have been arrested in connection with this deadly stabbing. this is where it happened blocks from at&t park at 11:350 last night at third and perry, police say that a group of people confronted the dodger fans wearing blue and white gear. someone stabbed the victim who was with his father and victim at the time. he was wounded in the upper body and transported to the hospital wherer later died. now. giants/dodgers game had just ended, maybe about an hour or so before the stabbing. the giants had won 6-4. we don't know if the suspects or the victim had attended the game or just a bar nearby or what. police will not confirm what the susp

tara moriarty is in oakland this morning.a. >> reporter: gallo says unsupervised teens are contributing toward or being the victims of violent crime. he says we sorry about violent crime. we have prayed about it. gallo is introducing this proposal this week. it would actually ban youths under the age of 18. now if someone breaks the curfew they could face fines, community service, or jail time if they are found from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.. the plan also bars minors from being out and about during school hours from 8:30 in the morning until 1:30 in the afternoon. parents even could be penalized if their children are found unaccompanied. this isn't the first time the controversial curfew has popped up. many say curfews don't work. they have proven ineffective in other city. gallo says they are not doing this to lock everybody up. he was elected in november and represents the fruitvale district. coming up find out who is supporting him and who is knocking him including what mayor jean quan has to say about a city wide curfew. l

tara. >> reporter: yeah. michael montgomery is being charged with suspicion of murder. the 18-year-old who was questioned here, he has been released without any charges. remember police are still looking for two other people who fled the scene of the crime. michael montgomery's father told a newspaper that his son and friend were with two women attending a ray party in san francisco wednesday night. he says his son acted in self- defense and the victim 21-year- old jonathan denver hit montgomery over the head with a chair. denver grew up in fort bragg where the small tight knit community is reeling. he was at the ballpark with his father and brother just hours before he was killed. authorities believe montgomery stabbed denver outside of a bar. after a fight provoked by team rivalry. denver and his group were wearing dodgers gear. they were celebrating denver's brother's birthday with their dad. >> i gave him a big warning before because i knew what happened down a couple years ago in the giants verses l.a.. and it was -- i just never thought that would happen. >> repor

tara moriarty has been live at the bay bridge toll plaza since 4:30 this morning.e're also following developing news from texas. one person is dead, at least two others have been hurt after a series of stabbings at a high school outside of houston. it's believed all three victims are students. no word on any arrests. two people have been found dead in san leandro after a fire increased in size. claudine wong has been at the scene for hours, talking to neighbors who tried to save the victims. claudine, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. still a very active scene out here in san leandro. the coroner's van is still here. fire is on scene as well are police. two people lost their lives in that trailer after the fire that started there trapped them. there are a couple of details that we've learned that may make the story more tragic. we know that neighbors tried desperately to save the victims. they broke windows. firefighters say that may have actually caused the fire to get even bigger, by fueling it with more oxygen which is what neighbors describe happening. >

good morning, tara. >> reporter: you can see where the fire started. can see how the crews ripped up the stucco and all of the installation really dissecting it to make sure the fire didn't ignite nearby business. it broke out at a starbucks. the worker called 911. firefighters busted open the stuck ke on stash bucks off crow canyon road and 680 and they made a very aggressive attack. >> we did have fire in the rear walls of the complex and had smoke in several of the units. from what we can tell, there was no extension in any of the units. >> reporter: crews were concerned at first because this is a strip mall. flames can spread quickly. there is a cheesesteak shop, a bank and a pizza place nearby. crews busted through the glass doors of the bank to gain access. there's a very heavy police presence here. firefighters were able to squelch the initial fire within minutes no. a lot of damage. but that could change because they are really riching this -- ripping this apart and investigators will try to figure out what caused the fire. the chief says he th

ktvu's tara moriarty has been out there for quite some time. what happened out there? >> reporter: well, we were able to speak with fire crews just as they were pulling the last engine into the firehouse. the fire captain told me there was an arson investigator being called out to the scene. we're on the back side where the fire was near highway 101 and also near a park that homeless people are known to frequent. authorities say at the are interested in talking to them to see what they heard and saw around 1:30 this morning. that's when flames broke out 101 southbound before the cesar chavez off ramp. crews were able to snuff out the flames within 15 minutes. we're very close to what's known as hospital curve. it's a very dangerous bend in the road. chp had to shut down the southbound lanes of the freeway while firefighters got the flames under control. >> no structure there. there's a cement retaining wall in the back. and then there's nothing, no structures around that area to burn. just wood and ivy. they did a great job protecting us. >> reporter: no one was hurt i

actually, i'm gonna toss it to tara. tara, i'm sorry i forgot about you. what's it like out there? >> reporter: well, there was this sense of excitement the first couple of days we were out here. it was very noisy. they were hauling debris. most of that work has been completed. crews are kind of tired. don't forget. they've been out here round the clock. officials have said this bridge should be open by 5:00 in the morning. but there's a chance it could open earlier. everything is on schedule. the s-curve is gone. the approach is smooth and straight and inside the tunnel, new l.e.d. lights and fresh paint. demolition is done to make way for the bike path. crews are wrapping up paving and striping. the chp says it has a plan in place once the bridge opens. >> caltrans will tell us the bridge is clear and ready to open and ready for traffic. at that point, we'll stop traffic on the feeder roads. the caltrans crews will pick up the phones. it won't be one or two cars going as fast as they can. and then we'll guide the cars across the bridge. >> reporter: the chp is in maximum enforcem

tara moriarty is covering dozens of people forced out of their homes. we begin with alex savidge and alex has new information about the size of this out of control fire. it stands at 1500-acres that have been burned. where here where we are winds are very calm. hardly a breeze at all. let me show you too as we push over here. now that the sun is beginning to come up here. we are just outside of clayton this morning. . you see this large plume of smoke rising up. it's almost going straight up in the air. good indication it's not a strong breeze. the fire 100 acres and 10% contained. over night according to firefighters i have just been talking to essentially what the flames did up these steep canyons. the fire has almost burned close to the peek of mt. diablo. that is 3800 feet. that means about 100 more firefighters joining this receive fort. we are just outside of clayton and crews are trying to get a handle on the fire that started at 1:45 yesterday afternoon. throughout the day yesterday there were air tankers. it is threatening 100 or so. dry brush

tara moriarty is joining us live with the very latest. >> reporter: good morning.e just received an update from firefighters and they say this fire is 70% contained. so that is fantastic news. joining me live is captain steve. some great news this morning. we understand the acreage is actually less than you first thought it was. >> yeah they were able to do better mapping overnight. so the acreage is 31-33. >> reporter: and how many firefighters do you have here? on monday it was like 500. and more than double that now. >> yeah i just got a new number. we are scaled back to a little over 1300 firefighters. we will start releasing a bunch more resources today back to their home units. >> reporter: and what is it looking like? i know you expect containment by friday. >> correct. we expect containment by friday. firefighters were able to put in more containment line last night. very successful with that. and then they will continue to improve that containment line and also start some mop up of areas today. >> reporter: for folks that don't know what mop up means expla

ktvu's tara moriarty will have a live report on the crash at 7:45. including why the chp says it is only a matter of time before the driver who caused the crash is caught. >>> also new this morning, a hayward police officer is recovering after being injured in a chase. several officers noticed a suspicious vehicle around 1:00 a.m. it turned out to be stolen. the driver refused to stop and rammed the police car before leading police officers on a chase from industrial to mission to groom street. two suspects took off running but were taken into custody a short time later. police say they may also have hit other parked cars in the neighborhood. >>> we did find two vehicles parked on the roadway struck by the suspect vehicle. and so we did a separate collision investigation related to that. >> the officer who hurt has minor injuries that he got during a scuffle with one of the suspects. >>> 7:06. happening right now, i wanted to show you this. defense secretary chuck hagel is scheduled to lay a wreath at the u.s. navy memorial plaza in washington, d.c.

we're talking about that gorgeous view that you can see from where tara is.ant to stop and take in the view and take a picture. don't do it. take someone along for a ride to take pictures for you. it is dangerous. stopping for any reason, other than an emergency, chp says it  is illegal. it is dangerous. and you can be ticketed. officers are going to be patrolling the bridge, looking for people slowing down, causing a problem. they will be looking for speeders. just so you know, the bridge speed limit is 50 miles per hour. now that the bridge is open, we know that the old bridge will be taken down. it will take a while. when that old section comes down, that's really going to open up the view there. the s-curve comes first and then the foundation. i was talking to tom. the old foundation went down into the water only about 30 feet or so. the new pillars, those pilings go down about 300 feet. so it really gives you an idea of how much safer this new bridge is. deconstruction will take about three years. that's about how long it took to build the whole bridge

tara maller has spent her career since 9/11 studying national security, cyber security. how much has changed since that day? >> a lot has changed. i remember coming up on capitol hill pre9/11, where you could just walk in an airport and not have your bags checked. so i think a lot as changed. i think we see this in terms of security in terms of our infrastructure, in terms of cyber security and in airports since 9/11 as well. >> is it a good thing that we're seeing this change? are we safer? >> we have definitely put a lot of resources into protecting these sites. it seems like we have been rewarded for the investments we have made. but as we saw in the boston bombings it only takes one person with bad intentions and in that case what was a homemade device. but there have been a lot of other materials to warrant, you know, stores looking for us ispy house behavior. but you are never going to be 100% safe. all it takes is one person with one crude device that can wreak a lot of havoc. >> and perhaps of more concern to today's generation, one person with a laptop. on septe

ktvu's tara moriarty is on the scene and just talked to chp about how this happened. >> reporter: good afternoon. a lot of heavy hearts here. about four hours ago it was a very horrific scene. a woman was trying to make a right-hand turn turn when she was coming out of the school when she hit a boy right there. he was dragged for about 60 feet and now two families' lives will never be the scene. a smashed bicycle lay underneath this black suv off byron highway. >> he was crushed underneath the vehicle. >> reporter: the boy was riding his bike when hit and instantly killed. >> she felt she struck some sort of object and immediately pulled over. >> reporter: the chp said the woman who struck him had just dropped off her own children at the school at 8:45 this morning el. >> it's an unfortunate set of circumstances. our heart goes out to the family of the young boy. >> reporter: a parent told us the 7th grader made good grades and said her mother survived cancer. >> he was wearing his safety helmet and had a contra costa sheriff's department badge on top of it. it's sad. >> reporter: the

tara? >> reporter: the crazy part of this story is this isn't the first time someone has crashed into this particular liquor store, and there are actually barriers in place where its happened before, but that didn't stop the suspect from causing a lot of damage. take a look at this video, you can see the mangled car here. this happened after the suspect slammed into a store on the corner of 98th avenue. police pulled him over around 11:00 last night at the corner of 10 eighth and then as soon as officers gout out of the patrol car the suspect sped off. 10 blocks away the driver slammed into a car with a woman inside and then knocked over a light poland crashed into the liquor store. onlookers wondered why the man try to evade police on such a simple traffic stop. >> we're still investigating that part of it but he's got some history, some criminal history, so we're looking at all those factors. >> police arrested the man, oakland police are handling the investigation into the crash. the wom

tara moriarty is live in the newsroom with more including a dramatic rescue. >> good afternoon. we'll show you the video in a minute. people who live in colorado say they are stunned, rockslides and flash flooding have taken out homes and put dams at risk forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. boulder county has been the hardest hit area with up to 6 inches of rain falling over a 12-hour period. a 20-foot wall of water was reported north of boulder. there have been many 911 calls for help. some dramatic video we want to show you a man submerged in a car was caught on tape. he was one of three drivers trapped when rushing water washed out a road. >> the road was eroded from all of the raining through the drainage area. so we're able to save the lives in the cars. there was a victim in each car. >> this was a devastating overnight storm in the dark. i anticipate as the day goes on, we're likely to find other people who are victims of the storm. >> reporter: volunteers are trying to help stranded people until emergency crews can arrive because so many roads are impassible. an emer

tara moriarty joins us live now from the fire command post in dublin. tara?base camp where nearly 1400 firefighters are and about a half-hour ago, crews had their briefing before heading up the mountain. they had a moment of silence to pay tribute to the victims and firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. now, we did receive an update this morning. we want to pass that along to you, as tori mentioned. this fire is 70% contained. they have lowered the number of acres burned as well to 3,133 acres. calfire has lifted the evacuation order for dozens of families out of their homes and yesterday on mt. diablo, we got a much closer look at the blackened hillsides an downed power lines. right now, crews are in the mopup stage. >> within the containment lines there will be hot spots on the ground and so sometimes it's just little pockets of ash that are super hot. so the crews will make sure all of those are picked up. so that way if we have any more winds that it doesn't blow across the containment lines. >> reporter: at the summit, the fire stopped just shy of t

tara has more on the young victim. >> reporter: well, neighbors can't remember the last time there was a homicide in this neighborhood. the suspect waited for the victim as they got off the train, maybe? those are answers the police department is trying to come up with. this is a train stop. it happened at this inter section. it would appear the victim was targeted. the 19-year-old shot and killed as he was getting off a train just like the one. this unfolded just before 10:00 on the corner of randolph and bright street. it appears a 19-year-old was taking a train home when someone shot him as he got off the eastbound train. we've looked around. there do not appear to be video cameras that may have captured the shooting. this is a pretty residential area. there's a park near by. the identity of the victim has not been released. around 9:00 we hope to get an update on this case. i'm told a report will be out. live from san francisco tara moyarte. >>> oakland investigators will go back to the scene of a huge fire at a historic church. it was at the zion church of christ. ktvu was given a

ktvu tara moriarty is there, just arrived on scene. what can you tell us? >> we are getting ready to do a live shot at the bay view police substation. we saw four cop cars whiz buy. we discovered there is a burglary in prospect. right at the corner of filament. we are parallel to 101. if you take a look behind me you can see the fire department has been called in. a couple police officers went on top of the roof to look for the suspect. we are told that he is dressed in black. he has a hoody on and possibly carrying a crowbar. we don't know if he is armed with anything else. we did speak to an officer who said he hadn't been inside the bank to see if there was any type of damage. obviously the call came in from someone that was concerned. you can see we have the street blocked off right here on the 2400 block of san bruno. a bunch of officers came down off the roof. we don't know if they didn't find anything up there. they will be continuing their search and talking to possible witnesses. but we will keep you posted. live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty
