tara moriarty is right near the 280 on-ramp to give us more. tara? >> reporter: that's right. this is a major injury accident. as you can evidence by the treadmarks in the roadway. they extend for quite some distance. they are coming out to measure it. you can see where the car slammed into a tree and is crumpled in the distance, a large amount of debris in the roadway. if we look at the video we can show you that there were three people who were transported to the hospital earlier this morning here off of brotherhood way and thomas moore way. it happened shortly before 3:00 this morning. when, again, that car crashed into the tree. we're not sure if they were speeding, if they lost control or any of the details because there's an investigation team here and they've been standing around. i think they are waiting until it gets a little lighter. er in -- and they are examining the evidence. there's so much stuff in the roadway now. we don't know the extent of the injuries of the three people involved but typically in a crash like this there's major trauma and those folks would g

tara moriarty is live in napa with more on the damage done to the home. tara. >> reporter: well, the fire completely ravaged the home. it's difficult to see because it's dark out here and a very rural area. there are no lights. but this is a fire that actually isn't completely out. there are still hot spots that firefighters couldn't get to because of power lines were in the way. now let's take a look at some of the video that was shot last night around 10:00. just before 10:00 actually. officials say an elderly man was sleeping in his bedroom he woke up when he heard popping and crackling noises and sound of a smoke alarm. luckily he was able to get out of the house but his cat was not. they believe the fire ignited in the garage. in that area was gun powder and ammunition that sparked education motions. it took 30 firefighters from napa and cal fire nearly two hours to contain the fire. the cause is still under investigation and at 6:30 this morning so in a little bit here crews expect the fire to be completely under control. in a few hours firefighters

tara moriarty joins us with the traffic sent -- from the traffic center. tara? >> some say there are still some kinks that have to be worked out, the way it affects people's a driving. the lanes are on highway's 237 and run through 880 in milpitas. we hit the new toll lane eastbound on 237 this morning near zanker road. the more congested the roadway is, the higher toll you pay. the cost today was nearly $2. one chp officer told us he responded to three accidents along the four-mile stretch along the toll lanes just this morning. >> we noticed a lot of high- speed lane changes. people are trying to get back over that don't belong out there. so more accidents this morning than unusual. >> reporter: despite the danger of using the lane, one driver said it was worth it. >> it seems like when you are stuck in the junction, this will probably save you ten, 15 minutes. >> you must have a fastrack pass. the toll will range -- from 30 cents to $66. vehicles with -- cents to $6. these toll lanes will operate the sale as the toll lanes with an extended hour in the morning

tara moriarty is in san francisco right now to tell us about this suspect and his alleged victims. tara. >> reporter: police tell us there were four separate homicide scenes inside this house alone. so that made their job very difficult. it was a very complicated and confusing crime scene. sources tell us the suspect had thrown bleach and paint over parts of the home to tamper the evidence. investigators really took their time sifting through everything. 48 hours after the bodies were discovered police zeroed in on 35-year-old binh thai luc. they arrested him yesterday. they believe he is responsible for the savage killings of five people on saturday. next door neighbor says the victims were well liked, helpful, and even took out his garbage for him. >> hard to focus at work or anything. it's very tragic. people die in accidents. okay. so it's an accident. but this is intentional. much scarier. >> reporter: investigators won't say what lead them to luc but apparently he knew all five victims. police told ktvu they were looking into a gambling debt as a motive. it's believe that the

tara moriarty is live outside police headquarters. tara. >> reporter: today city council woman susan plans to meet with the city manager to discuss the police chiefs actions. this controversy all stems from an incident that happened thursday after midnight when berkeley police chief michael meehan decided to send an officers to a reporters home. doug oakley had written a story about a heated community meeting earlier that night. meehan had apologized for the departments slow response in connection with the february 18th killing of berkeley hill resident. meehan said he never apologized but instead said he was sorry for not releasing information about the homicide earlier. the police officer knocked on oakley's door while they slept. she told oakley she was mortified to be at oakley's home but was asked to give a direct order to ask him to change the story. he says he does not plan to sue and will report to work today. live from berkeley i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >>> jury selection continues in the trial of san francisco sh

tara moriarty is live with more. tara? >> reporter: well, firefighters are asleep right now. they should be waking up shortly. but napa was not the main agency on this fire, calfire was. but together, about 30 firefighters battled the firefighter that happened shortly before 10:00 last night. officials say an eld man was sleeping in his bed -- an elderly man was sleeping in miss bed and woke up to the crackling noise. luckily, he was able to get out of the house. he was on the other side of the house from where the fire started. his cat did not survive. officials believe the fire started in the garage. inside was gun powder and ammunition. that set off a string of explosions. it took crews two hours to get the flames contained. after crews did get the fire contained. they had to leave. they will go back this morning and make sure all of those hot spots are out. and once the sun is out, investigators will be on the scene trying to pinpoint the house of this fire. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> in overnight news an early- morning car crash sent a power pole to the grou

tara moriarty has been out there all morning.is where a suspected drunk driver knocked this out. what's going on now? >> reporter: this is going on five hours now that pg&e has been working on this situation. you can see where the car slammed into the pole. right where you can see the bundle of cables there, they were touching the cars. so the driver could have easily been electrocuted. witnesses say the driver walked away without a scratch. police did arrest her on suspicion of dui after she failed a field sobriety test. pg&e cut off power while they were trying to fix the pole here two nearby businesses, including nick's restaurant. they were left without electricity. >> we're just gonna have to wait for the power to come back and let some people go without paying. >> reporter: the 24-hour, family restaurant was forced to close its doors. it looks like all of these businesses are on the same transformer. we did just speak to pg&e and they did have to dig up the concrete here to get to the base of the pole. they are gonna have t

tara moriarty joins us live from the scene to let us know the latest. tara?u can see how bad the damage is. >> reporter: one of the fire investigatestors told ktvu it appears the fire started inside one of these cars and does appear to be accidental. the flames were so fears they crept up into the apartments above forcing 18 parents and children out in the cold. a woman who lived in one of the units said she and her teenaged son escaped out the back door. this is video that leah maddock shot here just after 4:00 this morning. she said she heard some popping noises, a wall of black smoke at her front door, so she ran outside and then saw the cars on fire. >> interview: and so i tried to call 911 from my home phone, it didn't work. tried 0 call from my cell phone, it didn't work, i started yelling fire in the courtyard and everyone woke up and started banging on doors and trying to get everybody out. >> reporter: it took 30 firefighters 20 minutes to get the flames under control. crews did not have to perform any rescues, they did escort some people out. red cr

tara moriarty is in the city this morning where it all happened at the city's newest occupied camp, tara? >> reporter: well this occupied encampment is pretty small despite the challenges and some of those include the homeless alcoholics and drug addictions. a man was rushed to the hospital after getting into a scuffle with a man who was not a protester. the suspect stabbed him in the arm and ran off. >> it has not been safe since we down there but that's part of occupied. >> what we have seen in the past two weeks, one the san francisco police department sort of garden variety harassment sort of died down, a bunch of mentally ill people started coming into the camp. >> the first stabbing occurred when a 28-year-old man was stabbed in the chest. he is expected to survive. now the suspect in that stabbing ran off. he is described as a 20 to 28- year-old white man. he was last seen wearing dark framed glasses. and the suspect is a 30-to-40- year-old white man with a thin build. occupiers will now walk in pairs and they are getting one person to volunteer to watch over the rest of the group

let's go to tara moriarty in berkeley where four-car accident just cleared up. right tara? >> reporter: that is right. there is a huge puddle of standing water at the gilman exit on westbound 80. we are under the freeway. this is where all the cars pulled over. four cars involved in that accident. luckily no one hurt. a lot of damage to cars. happened at a quarter to 5:00 this morning. sadly this is the case on my bad area roadways. >> i hit a puddle and i spun around when i was on ice skates. i hit the mini van and tore my car up. >> reporter: moments ago cal tran cleared the coolage avenue onramp. at 3:00 this morning a 70-foot tree had fallen. luckily no one hurt there. as mark tamayo has been mentioning, the bulk of the rain will be here for your morning commute and then it will dispate and not return until tomorrow night most likely in the north bay. it is still pretty windy out here. you can see how the wind is blowing the rain. definitely take it easy. a lot of standing water out there. going across your bay area bridges pretty hazardous. live from berkeley i'm tara

ktvu tara moriarty is live in berkeley to explain the fallout from the chief's late night command. ra. >> reporter: critics are calling this a case of police intimidation. saying michael meehan lacks a police chief gene. they are meeting to talk about it. this all stems from a controversy thursday after midnight when meehan decided to send an officer to a reporters home. doug oakley a reporter for the oakland tribune wrote a story about a heated community meeting earlier that night. meehan had apologized for the slow response in connection to the february killing of berkeley's resident by an intruder at his house. meehan bris led at the -- meehan bristled about the report. the police officer mary cussmiss knocked on his door while the family slept. she told oakley she is mortified to be at his home but was asked by the chief to ask him to change the story. he did make minor changes but when the chief was not satisfied that's when oakley spoke up. meehan apologized for oakley. oakley does not plan to sue and he will report to work today. coming up find out if meehan has the police de

tara moriarty is right near interstate 880 in oakland. tara?reporter: well, good morning there, sal. you are exactly right. there have been a lot of crashes. none of them very serious. we have standing water and this seems to be the story all morning long, standing water and high winds, making for a treacherous morning commute. we did talk with the chp within the last past 15 minutes. they say luckily there's no serious incidents. a lot of fender-benders and spinouts because of this weather. we found a large puddle of standing water off harrison street and 580. it's so deep but it's messing up people's cars. one driver had to call the chp to push his car off the road because the engine would not start. and just before 5:00 a.m. in berkeley, we had a four-car crash near gilman where several cars hydroplaned. one driver we took to was pretty shaken up. >> i hit a puddle like i was on ice skates. i hit that vehicle. scary. >> reporter: kind of scary that moment, when you don't have any control? >> oh, yeah, always a sense of panic comes with that.

tara moriarty joins us live. you just got word about his condition? >> reporter: yes. that's right. tonight we know he suffered third-degree burns to one hand, second-degree burns to the other hand and his waist. the fire started in this bottom unit where it's boarded up. the fire was so intense it melted the paint off one side of the building. and if you can see the whole there, that's where it shot through the roof. the veteran firefighter severely burned his hand when his glove slipped off and the only thing that saved him -- >> this was the ventilation hole, where our firefighter went in. we were able to grab him. >> reporter: when the fire broke out at 3 3::00 this -- 3:00 this morning -- >> the window broke. flames everywhere. >> he saved her life. that's where the fire started. if no one got her out -- she was asleep or unconscious. >> reporter: the man mock -- knocked on every door. >> we saw smoke in the apartment. my daughter natalie, is 7. i was awake and she woke up and yelled fire -- yelled fire. >> reporter: investigators believe this fire ignited because of a candle l

tara moriarty is there now where families with young children must find a new place to stay. tori?rter: that's right one firefighter fell through the roof. there is a little hole between the smoke stacks and that's where the accident happened. he's expected to be okay. he suffered severe burns to his hands. he's at the burn center now. it was a close call. >> this is where the firefighter came in. we were able to pull him out quickly and save him from suffering serious injury. >> reporter: a passerby shot these pictures. you can see just how intense the flames were. it did get to a four-alarm, which means 75 firefighters were battling this blaze. now, firefighters are calling the neighbor a hero. he and a -- he and a friend were walking by when he noticed the flames and then they began to knock on doors and woke people up. one woman has a daughter and an infant. >> it's probably about 2:30 in the moving. we smelled smoke in the automatic. my daughter, natalie, she's 7. i was awake the she woke up yelling fire and i had her watch my 7-week-old son. >> all made it out of the building

tara moriarty joins us now with the new evidence that was found. >> reporter: we are here at the command post. they made the release that they discovered her purse. sierra's black and pink juicy brand purse with some clothes folded neatly inside was lying near laguna avenue. the night before, crews found her cell phone off sheller avenue. these discoveries were made less than two miles from sierra's house. >> we're going to concentrate within a three-mile radius of sierra's mom's home, looking for any evidence of a crime, clothing, tire tracks, anything that can help out in the investigation. >> reporter: volunteers are combing the field around this area and officers are using dogs to search clues. sierra is a freshman. she sent a text to her home around 7:00 and there is no evidence that she rap away. authorities have contacted all sexual predators that they know off within a ten-mile radius and say they will now expand their search. as for these clothes, to see if there is any fluid on them, whether blood or europe, threw would not say. i'm at thattara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>

live from oakland i'm tara moriarty. >>> we are on storm watch this morning. quite a bit of rain overnight and often some of the problems happen north of the golden gate bridge. that is where christien kafton is in this morning. sometimes they get flooded. how does it look? >> sometimes they do get flooded. this is not one of those times. certainly there is evidence of high water. you can see how much rain we had yesterday. if you take a look there that is the creek. again not anywhere near the flood stage. you can see how fast that water is running. it's very brown. it's kicking up a lot of dirt and there is a lot of movement behind that water. meanwhile parts of the north bay are dealing with the aftermath of the windy storm. at 7:00 a large oak tree came crashing down. briefly trapping three people inside the home. everyone is okay. firefighters had to help get the residence out of that house. neighbors tell us when the tree came crashing down everyone heard it and describe it as sounding like a jet plane. >> we were all asking everybody are they okay? >> r

tara moriarty joins us now with what police are saying. >> reporter: we spoke to police this morning and they did confirm that gunfire erupted here last night inside the parkway gardens. it's the second time it has happened in two days. last night again we noticed that some police were searching a white car at the corner of dover and east pacific streets. the car was marked with bullet holes and they were searching it for evidence. in speaking with police this morning they tell us they don't know of anyone who was hurt in the shooting. we are still waiting to hear back from one of the lieutenants to see if any arrests were made. wednesday evening two men were shot and killed in this very same neighborhood. 24-year-old vadell chew of fairfield. police are searching for one suspect running if the scene. african american man with 6'1" with athletic build and dread locks. he reportedly drove off in a gold mer day see -- mercedes z benz. we understand lieutenant is supposed to be back in this morning around 8:00. hopefully we'll get an update from him and let you know where their investig

tara moriarty has more on when the report might be released. >> reporter: the judge did give the okay for the release of the renoso report. basically, what this means is that details of the pepper spraying incident will eventually be revealed to the public. not sure when judge emilio greo said that the public had a great interest in this. he was pushing for the end of the day for the release but attorneys with u c davis wanted to discuss it with their client first. this is not the news that the police union wanted. police under fire for their handling of the protest. lawyers for police tried to block the university from releasing this report because they felt portions of it violated officers' privacy. a temporary restraining order on march 6th cut by former california supreme court cruz renoso to release its findings to the u c davis community. that 12-member task force was created to investigate the pepper spraying. we felt that much of the report dealt with administration desist, not with action by individual police officers. there were portions of the report that he did not make a

ktvu's tara moriarty is on the crime scene. what are police saying about this case? >> reporter: police will not confirm whether this is a murder-suicide or a homicide case. all we know is that there are five people dead and they all live in the house that you see behind me here off of howth and ocean avenue. there was an incredibly large police presence here, homicide, detectives, csi and the police chief. a woman who has key to the home went inside and discovered three bodies, two men and one woman. she called police and when they arrived, authorities found two more bodies, both women. officials say that they appeared to be victims of gunfire. >> we believe at this time that this is specific to this residence. we have some information that we are following up but i want to assure the public that we don't believe that we have anybody at large that's going to be looking to do random acts. we believe that this act was specific to this residence. >> reporter: police not looking for a suspect at this time. they would also not comment on whether they found a gun, but it
