we will go to tarhonda thomas. we hear the roof collapsed. >> reporter: the roof did collapse and then firefighters had to cut a hole in this roof as well to try to attack this fire. it's a small house at 29th and federal, two people were inside. one step from the door, when firefighters did come in to rescue them. if you look at the top of the roof. you can see some smoke coming from it. this where the flames really came out, where the roof collapsed to let the fire and the smoke come out. by the chimney affect. that's a defensive attack that firefighters were using in the fire. crews were inside and said it was too dangerous to stay ins they pulled out and started attacking the fire from the outside. here is look at some of those flames and all the smoke that morning rs around 4:00, when firefighters got here. they do say that the people were taken to the hospital, we don't know their condition yet. the important point, too, is they kept this fire from spreading to a house that right next door, looks like it's a

tarhonda thomas is south right now to bring us up to date on what's going on in castle rock, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're near i-25 and founders parkway. the lanes you see closest to me are in the northbound direction. just to the north of where we are, there's a jackknifed semi truck. we want to show you video of it. we passed by a short time ago. you can see the semi truck hit the barricade southbound on i- parkway. now, what we want to tell you is colorado state patrol has updated this, saying this semi truck is leaking diesel fuel. hazmat crews are on scene in castle rock on i-25 north of founders parkway. this is going to be something that could impact the morning commute, especially as more cars get on the roads. it's a big job to try to remove that. as far as your road conditions go, we do see snow packed interstate lanes on i-25 in the south end of town, really starting at lincoln before we start the snow pack on i-25. as we get to castle rock, we see more snows on the roads. it's not a huge amount, but it's enough to cover the lines so you don't really see which

others are statewide changes. 9news reporter tarhonda thomas one is a mandatory college entrance exam? and state legislators voted last year to change that entrance exam from the act to the sat. however, they could still let 11th graders this year take the act since they have been prepping for it. another thing legislators did in the latest session is to reduce the amount of standardized testing in the state. that is also part of a national initiative signed by president obama. it's called the every child succeeds act. president obama signed this into law in december. what this law does is it essentially replaces the no child left behind act, which was signed in 2002 by president the george w. bush. president obama said that no child left behind had good intentions, but it really kind of went off tracking when it comes to standardized testing. the new act basically takes away some of that standardized testing. it still requires starting in the third grade, but states really have more power, more say failure. states can intervene in schools that are underperforming. the act mandates th

his goals for the state during his annual state of the state address. morning. 9news reporter tarhonda thomas preview. we already know some of the things he is going to talk about? >> reporter: we do. some of those are lofty ones. democrats control the house. republicans control the senator. governor hickenlooper hopes to have some control over the laws that pass this session. the session opened up yesterday with house and senate leaders giving their pitches. the governor gave us a preview of some of the things he plans to address. restructure the taxpayer bill of rights. republicans are opposed to the he will have a fight on his hands there. hickenlooper says he is opposed to the approximate ush to celeker and full strength beer at grocery stores worrying it will affect jobs in colorado's bustling brewing industry. speaking of business, the economy is expected to be a of the governor's speech. not just the good parts, butt bad parts like the lack of state. hickenlooper says in this year's address his goal is to speak to the entire state. now, we will carry governor john hickenlooper's state

tarhonda thomas is at the state capitol this morning. the most notable change is the switch from the sat to the act? state legislators made that decision at the capitol during the last session. they basically said that students who are preparing to enter colleges in colorado instead of taking the act, they will be required to take the sat. the move we saw this week was on monday when there was a request made to forego and to actually delay that decision until 2017 basically meaning juniors in high school right now could still take the act since that's a test for which they have been prepping in order to get to college. next year students will be required to take the sat. we will see if that request is approved. let's talk about the jefferson county school board. changes there. big changes that were enacted in november. that is when voters in that county decided to recall the three conservative school board members. they have been involved in controversial decisions. that led to protests which led to a petition which led to the majority i
