we're live in trade, tennessee due west of asheville, right near the tennessee border. what do you see from your position in the town of trade? >> well ill tell you the devastation coming out of north carolina alone is heartbreaking. when you get up into the rural mountain communities that have been completely cut off from resource like bigger cities like asheville and boone have had, it is really a tough situation to really put into perspective. i want to give a quick update what i've latest learned in tennessee, in east tennessee. fema has opened up at least 75% of federal funding for affected counties. the governor, bill lee, did request last night to president biden to expedite a major disaster declaration for these affected counties in east tennessee. there are six confirmed deaths and more than 100 missing according to tennessee bureau of investigation. 9,000 power outages thus far. in these rural communities, power is completely cut off. there is no water. there are 20 drinking water facilities that have been compromised. here where we are there is no water to sp

unit two tennessee's death row in 2018.ee was gearing up for its first execu ation in nearly decade, and that was the execution. a man named billy ray eric alvaro was had become quite close with and as i was covering that case in the run up to that started asking around about i might be able to get in touch with some of the men on death row to try to interview them or see if they wanted to make a statement of any kind. these executions were approaching and as i was kind of asking around about that, i got put in touch with a man named david bass, who was here in the audience and met up with him and told me this extraordinary thing, that there are these people who go to riverbend maximum security about, you know, 15 minutes from here and go to death row and sit around and hang out and visit the men. on tennessee's death row. and he said, in fact, i know the man who visits billy ray eric. and so he introduced me to you and everyone we talked know on the phone and, i ended up interviewing alvaro in the run up to that execution.

but if you talk to people who work in the prison system in tennessee, a lot of them will tell you they'd rather work on you to a riverbend than anywhere else you know, because the guys there calm, pretty low key. there are people there with some profound issues, but by and large the issues that a correctional is going to face in a lot of other prisons not going to face there. and i always think i always want to stress the point that not that i think that even though i do think there are some programs on tennessee's death row that are are good and are helpful to people, i think it's not so much that like, oh, so it turns out being sent to death row can be good for prison. but what it is, is that for a lot of these guys, they have not had a stable moment in their life until they got sent to a prison. and so what that makes me think about is what are other interventions, you know, all of them. a lot of in a lot of cases, people did attempt to intervene in some way or another. i mean, i've talked about this but billy ray eric was six years old when a teacher was like, i we need to look into
