>> terry: doyle drive is coming down this weekend. caltrans racing to knock down the old approach to golden gate bridge before monday morning. the golden gate bridge is still open. we'll show you how to get around the closure this weekend. >>> good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. thanks very much for being here. massive effort is under way to demolish the old sky way by monday morning's commute. caltrans has doyle drive shut down all weekend. so far things are off to a good start, that is what i hear from frances dinglasan. >> things are quiet across the golden gate bridge. you are safe to take this route heading in or out of san francisco. i need to clarify a lot of confusion on the detours in san francisco. this is the official detour map. this is the doyle drive section that is closed. technically it does let you make a left turn on california street but there is a sign saying no left turn. i just talked to caltrans. they said right around now, 6:00 they are sending somebody there you should be able to make a left turn on california.

terry took lincoln boulevard and a lot of folks taking presidio. i want to show you the official detour map. what they recommend is heading south on highway 1. you noticed california and geary or the detours. on california, there is an illegal left turn side so at geary right now we had one of our folks at abc7 just drive through there earlier this morning. and the lights are flashing red, there is a traffic control officer helping people make that left turn. geary is a faster alternate heading towards downtown san francisco. keep that in mind. there is illegal left turn sign on california but we'll keep you posted on that. other detours are heading to the richmond-san rafael bridge down to the bay bridge, right now at the toll plaza things are light. you are good to go no matter which detour you take right now. >> terry: thanks very much. great to have you on this saturday. >> at age 75 the gd bridge is looking good thanks to ongoing earthquake safety upgrades. but it is unsafe seismically. heather ishimaru has more on that. >> reporter: the fire

good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. dig big story, massive effort to demolish the old sky way, hopefully by monday morning's commute. showing us the progress since last night. that is a lot. it's been 12 hours and they have done that much. that route shut down all weekend long. john alston has an update from the demolition zone. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. so far so good, workers have been at it nonstop. working 12-hour shift. 200 workers at any given time. let's take a look at the demolition that has been going on, heavy machinery pulverizing what is left of doyle drive. there will be 65 tons of debris and concrete and rebar, will be hauled off and recycled over the coming weeks. one of the issues has been dust in the area with all this concrete. from time to time we've seen workers adding water on to the scene to prevent the dust from getting too bad. we have not seen a lot of dust. in fact there are air monitors keeping an eye on air quality also for the safety of the workers. what we hear from sp

i think we all owe a debt of gratitude to terry for that.he city council officially recognized and honored his contributions on tuesday. (terry christensen) my biggest legacy is the students i've encouraged to be part of local politics. the people who have served and elected office who are active with non-profit organizations who are active with just their neighborhood group.. with an environmental group or whatever. there are generations of students who are engaged in politics in their community. christensen may be leaving the university but he's not leaving his beloved city. i'm joined by maxine waters and terry o'neill. great to have you with us. you know, the republicans are playing this now that the democrats are anti-family and the democrats are not family-friendly. congresswoman, your response to this. is this going to be over tonight or is this conversation going to continue? >> well, the debate about women is going to continue. it is an issue in this campaign. the republicans and mitt romney have shown that they don't care about women's issues. they didn't try to do anything to make sure that women were protected in this budget and then they scared us to death because they talked about not caring whether or not we had contraception. do you realize that contraception has changed the lives of women. it has given us choices. we can chose to have children, not have them, have as many as we want and that gives us the opportunity to stay home, to work. and when they brought this issue up, many of us thought we'd never have to revisit an issue like this again, that those of us who fought in the women's movement have gotten this
