the latest. laura anthony, abc 7 news. >>> and now back to dan noyes. he's been doing a deep dive into the issues. >> and making calls all around the bay area. high level source who works with engineers on the bridge project tells me that they believe they have identified the cause, it is an expansion joint on the upper deck at the eastern end southern edge just above wheres concrete chunks landed on the lower deck. the source says heavy trucks have been hitting that expansion joint hard opening spaces between the concrete and rebar and allowing water intrusion. what makes this more interesting is that the expansion joints were all supposedly replaced in the seismic retrofit back in 2005 and the comen creat nconcr at that time. but one engineer who consulted on the retrofit tells me he is concerned about the different type of concrete used on that upper deck, it is 60% lighter and not as strong. he says this appears to be basically an issue of wear and tear and that they will have to test the concrete on both the upper and lower decks. this bridge opened

for the i-team, dan noyes, abc 7 news. >>> good morning to you. st frontal showers and also looking at scattered downpours. live doppler 7 right now taking you into the east bay around 80. we're looking at the wet weather. further south a bit of a break from san leandro, but it's pretty soggy with light rain from dublin to 680, and the hills looking at the heavier rain from fremont boulevard to milpitas. back westward along the peninsula and the south bay, saratoga, it's pretty damp for you, but the heavy rain is here along the coast from mon tara and further south on highway 1, certainly down through pescadero. so the cold front moved through, maybe you were sleeping, and now we're in the scattered shower element. but the rotation here around it shows what's to come. it's an area of low pressure that will move over the bay area by dinner time and we'll see more heavy downpours. we do have rain in the mountains changing over to snow and it is raining all the way down into southern california. it's a 2 on our storm impact scale. the rest of the day
