>> there is a unique cultural characteristic of the bay area. certainly, the jewish community in the bay area. we are really defined by flexibility. we have this adventurous spirit, kind of like a cultural coarseness. we don't, in general, express jewish life in a very particular way but there is openness to integrating and i would say remixing from other cultures and other universal values. that is really the character and the way in which jewish life is celebrated and expressed here in the bay area. >> it seems interesting because in a reductionist way, the faith communities generally think of the locust of their faith community life in their place of worship, like a church or a temple or a synagogue or a shrum or a mosque. part of what i hear you saying is that in the coarseness of all of this, it might be that the locust of our jewishness is actually not singular. it is not monolithic, it is not even in one thematic structure. >> that is very well put. >> yeah. we are really in this moment experiencing this creative renaissance of jewish life

there's also sno along the bay area. some places are still dealing with damage from yesterday's wind storm. right now over 26,000pg & e customers are still in the dark across the bay area. most of those outages about 22,000 down in the peninsula 2,500 in the south bay. a winter storm warning goes into effect tomorrow night through sunday. words i don't say here too often. >> it's been 12 years since thi happened. this is literally a once in a decade kind of event for the bay area. >> unusual to be talking about this at all. very unusual to be talking about snow levels at 1500 feet which is what we're talking about. >> we are at grizzly peak which is at about 1,700 feet. this area is expecting snow to fall in the next couple of days. the last flurry was in 2019. but it is actually a pretty rare event >> the berkeley hills are very rare. but a snowstorm in the 1970s is one she remembers the most. >> we had a substantial amount of snow. we probably had 3-inches of something. >> maybe not that much snow ahead but it's likely

more 40s around the bay to wake up to tomorrow morning with the high clouds. inland areas, tri valley, and perhaps south of san jose around the north bay valleys may still have a little patchy frost for the morning. by lunch time still the overcast skies. highs eventually by mid afternoon reaching the upper 50s to low 60s around san jose. santa rosa 62 degrees. mid 50s san francisco to oakland. temperatures should start to climb more by wednesday. notice most of the bay area is in the mid 60s from san jose southward. similar trend up in the north bay. if you have a day to get outside and enjoy the weather, it is by far going to be thursday. we may even see some 70s south of morgan hill. santa cruz. 66 degrees. 68 san jose. bay side temperatures into the 60s. so the spring like temperatures tease a little bit of a warmup the second half of the week but the numbers start cooling down. a reminder it is still february outside. you'll see the cooler changes by the time we get to friday. may involve a slight chance of showers right there late friday into saturday. right now it d

the north bay mountains as well. so all the highways through the higher elevations, you want to avoid those. for most of the bay arearom a half inch to over an inch of rain. a lot of that aimed at the southern end of the bay area , just where the second round of moisture will be aimed on friday night into early saturday. it will also be called. temperatures tonight dropping down into the 30s areawide. even downtown san francisco dipping down into the upper 30s for low temperatures. you want to get your dogs out for a walk tomorrow, pickle and lilac won't have a lot of sunshine to bask in tomorrow, but still, where the pups out tomorrow. it will still be cold and breezy. temperatures will not warm up very much. only upper 40s to around 50 degrees for highs thursday afternoon. our temperatures don't warm up very much through the entirety of the seven-day forecast. after the dry brick saturday afternoon and evening we are back into a shower pattern sunday, monday and tuesday before turning the calendar page from february to march. it is not going to matter. temperatures will still be below average. looks like we might

daryl: the drop has been most dramatic in the bay area. the entire country is facing these high mortgage rates, but the unique situation the bay area has to deal with his remote work and tech workers, and tech valuations are down so that has a larger impact on the bay area. kristen: within the bay area, let's zoom in. are there certain areas that are faring better than the big cities? for example, are the suburbs holding their values? daryl: it is really about price point. so a modestly priced single-family home is going to maintain its value the best. there's more inventory of those smaller condo homes and people tend to prefer the single-family homes. that is why single-family homes that are moderately priced are doing better. for the bay area, moderately priced means closer to $1 million than $2 million. kristen: when people from other markets hear is talking about moderately range million to $2 million. have the $10 million homes slowed down in price? daryl: those have dropped more than any other kind of home. the $10 million homes in t

let's take a live look at the power outages across the bay area. not too many people out in the dark tonight. a few yellow spots. >> that anywhere from 50 to about 500 customers affected. a lot of people in the south bay, the peninsula, the city scattered in the east bay. and then as we look up yep, there's plenty up there, too, as well. napa, sonoma counties both have outages there. so a lot of people still in the dark. some have been out in the dark for a couple of days in calistoga. the power was out for almost 9 hours today. it went out about 3 o'clock this morning. it wasn't restored until noon kron four's rob nesbitt talked with the city's mayor about how generators might be used citywide during future outages. the power's back on here in calistoga. but many businesses stay closed friday after missing out on those morning hours. snow is common in the surrounding mountains, but here in the valley, it came as a surprise overnight. friday's early morning storm brought snow to the background of calistoga is palm trees. the top of cassandra daughte

the north bay. that is the pattern we have been seeing. this is about as low as the snow level will go for the north bay. however for the rest of the bay area, the east bay hills, the diablo range, santa cruz mountains, the snow level will continue dropping all the way down to the 1200-foot level. more moisture offshore. but this should be pushing through as we get toward the peak of rush hour tomorrow morning. more of a break in the action. plan on a slow commute and treacherous travel conditions in the north bay mountains and the santa cruz mountains. highway 9, highway 17. highway 35. all those will be sloppy. and more off and on showers through the day tomorrow. a little break in the action developing before showers back up toward us as we head into tomorrow night and early saturday. that shower activity will not last too long. we should be catching a break. here is the winter storm warning for all elevations above 1500 feet. that could drop all the way down to about 1200 feet. the amounts are going to vary wildly. on the rain snow dividing line. it will be the heavy wet snow. the higher you go, several inches of accumulation will occur

in many parts of the bay area. as we've got numbers soaring into the upper 60's in the santa rosa. 69 degrees. 68 in concord, 65 degrees. a little more. 62 in san jose, 61 in oakland, 60 in san francisco. these numbers by tomorrow going to be whole lot colder numbers dropping off around the bay area. now you've got a lot of 50's begin to pop up outside. 49 now the big bay. so a change in the weather pattern is a very cold system going to be dropping in the bay area from gulf of alaska that is going and only kick up the winds overnight tonight. it will also bring some very cold weather, maybe record cold tomorrow night in wednesday morning. right now, though, gusty winds. 41 mile an hour gust of the sfo this last hour. you got believe this. 26 in dylan beach got 19 mile an hour winds and snowmen. 22 in napa. so gusty around the bay area. now and we've got this week system to our north. that's going to be dropping in. that will bring with it. a chance of a few scattered showers and some cold temperatures rolling into

let's take a look at what has been mostly rain for the populated parts of the bay area. that is where it is going to be rain. right now, the most widespread rain is moving into the north bay, but snow in the sonoma coastal ranges and northern sonoma county and napa county as well. rain shower activity at the lower elevations. cold rain! it is not exactly pleasant, but it is rain. we have showers climbing up towards the san ramon valley. a few instances of heavier downpours and at the higher elevations as you look towards the diablo range. more snow as we head towards the highest elevations, including around mount hamilton. showers making their way through the santa clara valley. san jose getting a light rain shower at the moment. all of this activity is going to be followed up by even more shower activity as we head through the rest of tonight. more moisture over the pacific that will be surging in. most of us are going to see rain. the precipitation chances will be in the form of snow and become more widespread through the evening and overnight hours. the winter storm wa

well the bay area's biggest mountain. em got a fair share of snow in the east bay, streams of people drove to mont diablo state park , hoping to see the winter wonderland atop 3800 plus feet of elevation, and there she is, one mother says she and her 14 year old son drove for an hour and a half out of alameda, only to be turned away at the gate, park officials say, six inches to a foot of snow made the park a special sight to see. but the frosty weather also closed roads because of hazardous driving conditions. we're drilling with drought stricken trees that are just getting dumped on by heavy snow that aren't used to holding up that kind of weight, so that could fall on a car if they're driving through the road, so we need to make sure that we're assessing. you know those kind of hazards before we open it up to the public. officials say the park will reopen sometime over the weekend if the weather permits, meanwhile, as surreal scene in the san bernardino mountains down in southern california, we want to show you this vid

we've got all that red around the bay area. mountaintops and yes, some of the higher peaks going to see some snow down to about 1500 feet, maybe in the north bay all the way down to about or so as we've got some very cold temperatures already in place. in fact, look at the numbers right now. 44 degrees in fremont. it is 42 in pacifica. 45 in down to 33 degrees and callisto. you could very well be seeing some snow right now in calistoga where people live. so here's where it is. you can see that big swirl off the coastline and then all those clouds, a cold front just about to make its way on shore sitting right about here. it is going to be pushing south into the bay area as we head through the night tonight. the storm is going to be picking up, going to be some heavy rainfall moving in along with that system comes through and a lot of snow across the higher peaks and then all of a sudden as the front begins to move on through. well, you start to see some colder air moves in behind it. and that's where things really get kind of ma

the most affected areas of the peninsula and the south bay. if we take a closer look at the numbers we can see that 63,000 people are dealing with power outages throughout the bay area. the worst of it, is on the peninsula, nearly 45,000 are without power. followed by the south bay where 12,000 are in the dark.>>> i am here with first alert meteorologist, jessica burch. it is a lot of things happening. we are talking wind, potentially snow. maybe rain. >> it is part of the same major storm. this huge area of low pressure pushing in from the north bringing in a cold front. pitchers dropping into the 40s and 50s. to add to that, let's look at what we are dealing with. first alert weather day through the bay area. temperatures in the 30s and 40s in the bay this morning. it will be a chilly afternoon but behind you can see partly cloudy skies already. future cast, this is a great tool. i will show you the wind speeds in the distance. we are using san francisco and santa rosa for an example. but we will look at how much rain to expect. the rain is n

the roving downpours around the bay area yesterday. now a dry pattern will eventually lead us to more spring like temperatures for the second half of the week. outside right now speaking of a pleasant evening there is a gorgeous view. emeryville looking back to san francisco. here is the weather you can expect if you're heading into san francisco over the next hour or so. low 50s right now. not a lot of wind. as you can see the reflection looks nice across the bay. currently 54 in san rafael. mostly clear skies. a few high clouds approaching. off to the west in dublin. 53 degrees. san jose also in the mid 50s. so jacket weather. no umbrella weather if you're heading outside this evening. look at the view back toward lake tahoe in the distance updated sierra snow pack totals. really incredible when you consider where we are relative to the time of the year. these are the biggest numbers for the central and southern sierra snow pack since '82 and '83 at 206% of average for february 6th. more importantly 135% of the april 1 average. to qua

for the rest of us in the bay area who are closer to sea surface area, we are currently seeing rain in the forecast. this is the case into the 8:00 hour. heavy pockets sweeping throughout the peninsula into the east bay near tri valley area where wind speeds will mostly be 10 to 20 miles per hour. gusty conditions can get to 30, 35 miles per hour at times. into this afternoon, it becomes more hit or miss. we will be seeing a break near the noon set up with more scattered showers 2:00 to 6:00. i will have more on that in a bit. >>> let's look at the roadways. when we have days like today with all the wet weather on the roads, it's going to be difficult for the commute. give yourself extra time. if you have the choice, maybe this is a work from home morning. i am borrowing her doppler to give you an idea what to expect, give a perspective of the busiest freeways. it is quiet as far as volume. we are just getting underway for the commute now that we are in the 6:00 hour. the altamont pass commute is already a busy one. a a live look at some bridges, advisory on the golden gate. you see it

bay area, a bay area community fed up with crime. why they say it feels like city leaders have forgotten about them. >>> whipping winds causing all sorts of damage across the bay area for a second straight day. we take a look at some of the trouble spots. >>> and the first flakes of snow are already falling in the bay area. this is along highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains. the main brunt of this winter blast hasn't even arrived yet, but it is so pretty. good evening. i am ronnie and yamamoto. >> you love to see it. darren peck has a look at the mix of cold and precipitation behind all of this. >> forecasting snow level is a tricky thing and we don't often do it here in the bay area. i will use one of our most obvious landmarks as an example. mount diablo in the east bay, which just 3949 feet in elevation. if you look at thursday morning, we are going to have cold enough air in place that should it be precipitating at that point, you could potentially get snow as low as 900 feet. doesn't mean it's going to snow then, because we don't have the precipitation lined up perfectly with that timeframe. you could get a few light flurries that low, but it is dou

the north bay. a lot of the moisture will be aimed at the southern half of the bay area.approaches two inches of rainfall in san jose. i think that that is probably overaggressive, but still anything more than an inch of rain if it falls in a short enough period of time could result in a little bit of standing water on the sides of the roads. then we have more rain in the forecast. once we get past a dry day and showers redevelop on sunday, continues into monday and tuesday of next weekend. once again the cold air will still be here so we will see lowering snow levels once again. in the short term we are waiting for all of us develop. it will be cold out there tonight. temperatures dropping down to the 30s across the board, even below 40 degrees in downtown san francisco to start the day and we don't want not much from there. temperatures in the upper 40s to around 50 degrees. again, in the cities of the bay area, which are mostly about 500 feet in elevation, temperatures will be significantly chillier, which is why we have the threat of accumulated snow at such relativel

our pete suratos is live for us in the north bay with the damage being done across the bay area. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring these dangerous conditions. it's not just the wind we're talking about. it's also some of the freezing cold temperatures, too. >> we are going to have freezing temperatures tonight and even the possibility of some rain and snow over the next couple of days. but so far it's been the wind and dry conditions, and even our current wind gusts are still pretty high, near the coastline and in some of our hills. mount diablo, 39 miles per hour, and that's ongoing from the peak wind gusts we had yesterday evening that brought down a lot of trees and caused power outages. we do still have the high wind warning for the coastline and the rest of the bay area, a wind advisory, and that's where the winds could possibly reach 30 to 40 miles per hour into the afternoon, with higher gusts near the coastline. as we go toward 1:00 today, here is a look at those wind gusts that could reach 30 miles per hour, prolonged wind event like this could really weaken som

a lot of wind damage across the bay area. the high wind warning along the coast includes a sentences government a clock tomorrow morning. this is where the strongest gust will occur, 60 to 65 miles per hour, through sfo the wind gets funneled through the san bruno gap and accelerated more. the rest of the bay area is under a wind advisory through 1:00 p.m. tomorrow. at that point it is not like living a switch and every thing is calm. it will still be breezy. the strongest wind are likely happening right now. it is still something to monitor carefully. be prepared for power outages and further down the line prepare for snow in the higher elevations. rain chances will increase through the bay area. snow in the santa cruz mountains and santa clara hills. a winter weather advisory for the first batch of scattered showers. through 10:00 a.m. on thursday. don't ask but much in that timeframe, whether it is rain or snow in the higher elevations but still about 1500 feet, there is the potential for several inches of snow this week, o

wet roads for most of the bay area. a cumulative snow will be over the higher elevations, 1500 feet. that is where we will be tracking the rest of tonight. shower activity elsewhere, up over the pacific ocean, there is snow falling in mountains of the north bay, the santa cruz mountains and santa clara hills. that will again spread out as the freezing line drops lower. waves of rain continuing to roll in for the overnight hours, and morning commute on friday. there will be problems in the higher elevation highways. off and on shower tomorrow afternoon. a break in the action before rain in the central valley will backup towards us by early saturday morning. that will take a break by late morning and we will dry out saturday afternoon, staying dry saturday night, but the next rainmaker will be moving in already. snow levels look like they will be quite a bit higher. how much snow are we talking about? enough to mess up travel conditions on highway 35, highway 17, highway 9 in the santa cruz mountains, the highest amounts w

the bay area. seeing a good amount of that right now up in the santa cruz mountains. that's just there right above the south bay. also seeing some snowfall across the sun. oh, great now didn't stick to the road, but we saw some brief flurries are right there on portions of 6.80. also seeing some of it up towards mount diablo, mount hamilton mission peak a little flurry or 2 on mount tam. and i'm going to be watching areas around santa rosa really closely because your temperatures cold enough to be seeing it all the way down on the valley floor up there. we do have winter storm warnings in effect for the north bay mountains, the east bay hills and mountains, as well as the santa cruz and diablo range is those stretch all the way out into the interior of the state as well. just a whole lot going on out there. and one of our coldest arctic plunge is that the state has seen in years allowing so many of us to see this wintry weather uncommon to see this. we are seeing frost advisories and freeze warnings in effect as we make our way through the day today, temperatures falli

but here in the bay area. this begins 10 a.m. sday until four p.m. on friday for the santa cruz mountains, the east bay hills portions of the north bay and you can see the projections around 3 to 4 to seven, possibly upwards of 12 inches, so the landscape will be changing quite a bit as a real, a strong surge of cold air and rainfall and snowfall that will be moving in, at least approaching by this time tomorrow. here's the radar imagery right now. some speckled cloud cover out here. sure sign that. we have cold air out in the pacific and some scattered rain showers out there not too widespread, but it's cold enough to produce some low elevation snowfall, possibly close to the sea level up in portions of the north bay, and it looks like we have some more activity approaching the peninsula. themselves kind of skirting parts of the coastline. it is a chilly afternoon. as you know, the temperature is right now in the forties and the fifties and, of course, the winds the big weather headline yesterday. it's not as windy as yesterday.

let's head to pete suratos live in the north bay with a look at how the high winds could impact us in the bay area. >> reporter: good morning to you. you mentioned the wind advisory in place. we know some of the higher elevations in the north bay could hit up to 40 miles per hour. so that's something we'll be keeping track of throughout the day. that's on top of some of those colder temperatures we'll see in the region. so of course marin county officials are keeping a close eye on all of this. we did speak with the county's office of emergency management about how they're handling this. like many departments we're seeing around the bay area, they are familiar with these weather events following those january storms. they are going to watch closely the cold temperatures and the strong winds, but they're saying they're not anticipating, at least now, as much damage as those previous storms. >> in terms of the trees coming down with the wind, we think really the danger is somewhat less now because of the storms we had earlier in january and late in december, that weeded out a lot of the fragile tree
