but he went to the marines and said, look, i have an amazing idea. we need to bring navajos into the corps. train them how to be marines first of course, but then we're going to use their language to protect our communication. he was originally told, look, we don't do that kind of thing any more, but he begged to have a demonstration. the demonstration was -- permission was granted for the demonstration. it proved to be extremely impressive, and initially 20 navajos are trained. they are sent out to the fleet to see what the reaction will be. it was very positive. by the end of the war, over 400 navajos are trained to code talk. this plays a critical role, in places like iwo jima, where there are 20,000 japanese troops on the island when the battle begins. when the battle is done, less than 500. what that means is the marines are going to have to fight in very difficult conditions. particularly in places like iwo jima, where the japanese are not on the open battlefield, but down under the ground in caves and concealed places. in that type of environme

navy chaplains, of course, then as now, serve both the marines and the navy. and during world war ii the navy chaplains were always rotated every year. almost invariably. if they served on a ship one year, the next year they might be sent to a naval air station in the states and they'd be a third year they'd be sent out with the marines somewhere. and this is the way that those things went. the army, on the other hand, if a chaplain was assigned, say, to the 75th infantry division at general prickette, i read those words, that army chaplain would remain the infantry until the war was over. at least for the duration of his time he would be with them. so they did not rotate. if you were an 82nd air born chaplain, 101st airborne chaplain, you were going to stay with them throughout the war. so you really got to know the combatants, the troops you went with very well. the problem was it began to get in the way of knowing the troops all that well was the very fact that there just weren't enough to go around. often there just weren't enough to go around. but i want

the marin ha main society doesn't have a shortage of cats and kittens. >> we have 193 cats and kittens which is an extremely big at for us at the shelter. >> reporter: it's the way they received the cats, however, that is drawing attention. the most recent dropoff happened early monday morning before 5:00. surveillance camera footage from the shelter shows two people in a white suv dropping off several boxes of cats and kittens. 24 felines in total. one of the people then rings the doorbell, then both take off. about 15 minutes later, the cats were discovered by one of the patrol officers for the shelter. >> we don't know. it could be somebody who yes, starts to collect cats and doesn't think to get them spayed or neutered. they were likely kept indoors so perhaps the person doesn't know the situation they have. >> reporter: they say when the cats were dropped off, they were in good condition but they say it's really important to find the people that did drop them off. >> so we can stop them from continuing to breed these cats and kittens. it's not a responsible thing to continue to br

>> reporter: well just to give you a lay of the land, west marin, this is north of novato, laura, west the petaluma. at the site of this wild fire, the marin county sheriff's department says they have found some wreckage. now whether or not it's related to this aircraft that went missing last night, they have not been able to confirm that. but they have found reckage, what happened is around 9:30 last night, the faa called the marin county sheriff's department to let them know they received an emergency call from a pilot of a beach craft aircraft. this is a small aircraft that was flying from oregon to san carlos, california, on the peninsula. the plane reporting they were having engine trouble. shortly after that emergency call, hate it lost radar contact with the aircraft. the pilot indicated he was going to try to land at nas field. authorities checked nas field, no sight of the aircraft, then heard about the filed wire that they were fighting overnight. as i mentioned, they have found wreckage. the question is is that the aircraft that's been missing. they have not confirmed that.

city yesterday and the driver of a buick was wanted for the crime when a marin county sheriff deputy saw him driving this morning and the suspect took off, the deputy pursued and witnesses say the suspect was absolutely flying south on bridgeway when he slammed into a gore at the intersection of spring. he then sideswiped an s.u.v. and crashed into a minivan and pinned a man against a restaurant at fred's place. amazingly that man walked away. police say the suspect jumped from his car, tried to run away, witnesses say he even ran over to sailor's restaurant, went up on the roof and jumped off the roof when the police arrested him. >> we very fortunate we did not have more injuries or fatalities in this incident given how busy this intersection is. this is a popular location for locals to have their coffee. we are fortunate more people were not in the area at the time. >> four people were taken to the hospital. the suspect, someone who was in the ford suspect, and a woman and a toddler inside of the suspect's vehicle. thatted it her was not in a restrained seat.
