we drove down the peninsula. we're now in santa clara. we're near mission college, the rain coming down steadily here. we saw breezy conditions on one of our earlier stops, 4:30. that was in san carlos at the hill her aviation museum. we felt the heavy rain coming down in mountain view about a half hour ago, and now hoor the rain is also steady. it's getting colder. i don't know if you can tell that from kari's weather forecast. but it definitely is feeling colder. pete is making his way to the peninsula. we have now moved away from the peninsula and into the south bay. it seems like we are right in that little blob of red and orange. we are with that radar as if we're watching it on the nbc bay area app. we're going to continue to follow these conditions for you. a couple reminders from aaa, if you're hitting the road to head to work or on your vacation plans, make sure to stay away from cruise control in these kinds of conditions. when you get a little slippery, it's best to let off the gas rather than to hit the brakes. you can't do tha

this is the first ofjust five days he'll have to work in the peninsula. ainland he's making a plan. the harbour is at the eastern end of the bay. but a day like this here is rare. the sun's out and it's a balmy zero centigrade. landing ashore, though, can be risky. weather conditions can suddenly change and we have to be prepared. ok, a quick safety check, has everyone got water? tom and his team will go ashore more than a dozen times during this trip, but every landing is taken very seriously. ok, let's go. and it's notjust about personal safety, we have to protect the environment here too. this is the gangway on the side of the ship where we get onto a smaller boat. before we go ashore, we have to wash our boots. we can't take anything onto the antarctic mainland which wouldn't be there. it's just a short ride from the ship to reach the shore. but with relatively sparse sea ice, access to this bay and its nesting residents is smooth sailing. here in their hundreds, these are gentoo penguins. this is one of the cameras. right. as you can see there are a b

nbc bay area's rick boone is driving along the peninsula. we know you're in the passenger seat, so you can tell us how the drive is going. >> reporter: well, the drive is going pretty good. right now we went more towards into downtown san francisco, right now we are on van ness, about to jump on 101 going south. going through the city, it has been remarkably smooth. either everyone has gotten to where they need to go or they're pausing a bit. that was no the case earlier today in marin county. we had a lot of high standing water in some areas of marin county just beyond the golden gate bridge. that, in conjunction with earlier this morning we have been on this story since 4:00 this morning. there were a lot of accidents out there because there was a lot of rain out there. a lot of people who were driving just way too fast. lots of roadways. it was a particular area between 101 south and north around -- between millbrae and san mateo. seemed to be more of a bermuda triangle where people were just either going slow, hitting some water pockets,

here's a look at the south bay peninsula and the tri-valley. if you notice the south bay and the tri-valley really seeing those colder temperatures, 36 degrees, 30 in the tri-valley, and for the peninsula in the 40s. out near san francisco, 42 degrees, partly cloudy skies and out near the north bay, also into those 30s which means, yes, we will remain under that microclimate weather alert as we continue to see those freeze warnings. originally, they were scheduled to expire at 8:00 a.m. today but they are extended to 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. we could see temperatures out near the protected valleys and we are going to keep an eye on those overnight lows as they are expected to get even colder tonight. a frost advisory is also going to remain in effect until 8:00 a.m. on sunday for san francisco, san mateo, this dry cold air mass will keep those chilly temperatures in the forecast tonight and early tomorrow. if you do have an early morning commute, please wait until that frost melts from your windshield before hitting the road early this morning. we d

that was representative of what the north bay had but also the peninsula and east bay. let's show you the doppler radar. we're still tracking instability behind the score of the storm and that may fire off some activity the next three to four hours. we're tracking heavier pockets of rain right now just approaching sunnyvale expected to move through downtown san jose through 6:04 tonight. we'll get dry by tomorrow morning's forecast and that's what i want to focus in on next. with the storm gone look at these temperatures, back to another cold 37 in the south bay, 39 in the peninsula. in the trivalley, 33 degrees. i do not think the roadways will be completely dry. temperatures dropping that cold could create some black ice so trivalley, be on alert. keep an eye on the car thermometer and if it's near 32, reduce your speed. we may see black ice in the north bay, especially the higher elevations with 32 and east bay begins at 39. the primary reason why it's not only going to stay cold in the morning but into the afternoon is because because our storm system dropped down to
