of seawall lot 337 and with the development of pier 70, the southern waterfront is going to be truly transformed. i think that still we have to be able to focus on the maritime industry and have the industry and residential together on the southern waterfront. the decision to move all heavy industrial uses to the southern waterfront was before me. but i know there are other cities that residential, commercial, and maritime all co-exist together and do it in a good way. so to continue to have those heavy industrial uses and make sure that they are using -- that the truck trips are down. that there is not a lot of dust and the whole thing, because we will have residential communitis in the southern waterfront. so my vision is to see the expansion of the redevelopment, but be able to have the heavy industry co-exist with the new transformation. >> one of the things that i have heard from neighbors that live over in the ramp, you know, the port, and has put in parking meters along -- >> that is us and what is it? >> mta. >> mta. >> yes, you guys have the meters. so i know it's you [ [ lau

the mpd. southerners had delayed this transformation, but they could not halt it. bit by bit, activists and courts affected change. in 1968 the d.c. circuit court declared the city's vagrancy violations unconstitutionally vague. hence, arrests under that charge dropped off precipitously, and by 1972 they were virtually nonexistent according to police reports n. the summer of 1968, the mpd also issued a clarification on its police rules on arrest you should the guy dance of the -- under the guidance of the department of justice. this particular version modified the criteria stating explicitly that the mere refusal to move on at the order of a police officer was not sufficient to constitute a breach of peace. so there would be no confusion, the next year the mpd decided that disorder arrests should be subject to a pretrial hearing, essentially a bureaucratic review, meant to discouraging officers from relying on disorder arrests except in specific instances like a riot. .. the department of corrections sentenced an average of 50 addicts to jail per year. this grew at

this is hunters point power plant and it's just south of the main at southern end of the port's land.> as chris and i were driving along in the southern waterfront area, it was very hard to take a picture that had a person in it because there are no people there. there's a little bit of industrial activity, we see sand and gravel, and we see concrete. and here is a place where we have some of these waterfront lots that have been abandoned. this is the old almond brothers boat yard now. but there are no small uses being made other than these interim commercial uses. >> every city needs a place for that, if you store sand and gravel when you're recycling and all that. >> you need to have these kinds of sort of low value land use things. not everything gets high value developed. >> yeah, it's an interesting dichotomy. because for these kind of traditional -- what we still consider traditional maritime uses, shipping to come in, those are from an economic perspective, they're not high revenue generating kinds of uses. and yet the port commission, that is really one of their fundamental ma

heron's head park, the largest and most accessible and best-known habitat enhancement project, at the southern end of the port's jurisdiction just north of the former hunter's point power plant in south of pier 96. heron's head park is an irregularly shaped peninsula, from the air, is formed in the shape of the resident's head, the blue heron. when the port was constructing in the early 70s, the future pier 98, similar to other waterfront construction we put a debri dike to form a perimeter of the land that we wanted to build and placed fill behind it. today it's hard to imagine that it was the practice of the day. it was considered to be perfectly reasonable at the time. the port began constructing what it expected to be either a future maritime terminal or possibly the footing for southern crossing bay bridge. but as cargo demands moved -- or the demand for cargo terminals moved to the east bay, the port authority decided they did not need to finish pier 98, stopped placing fill. fenced off the area to public access, and what followed were several decades of benign use. in the early 90s, thi

states and southern democrats there was little isolationist sentiments. that sentiments in the country was among midwestern republicans, but among southern democrats, they were anglophiles. there was strong support for england, and event ily, the democratic party forced him to retire because they put up a lot of his shenanigans, but could not put up with the pro-nazi sentiments. people can say what they want in sam. sam was a world war i hero. he was very bright guy. he was conservative in a lot of ways issue and he was one of the staunch defenders of segregation, which he sort of had to be if you were a southern senator of the period. he was a leading strategist. that's not how he's remembered today. he's remembered today through watergate because he led the hearings, and that helped bring down nixon, and being a conservative democrat gave him, i think, more moral authority among republicans to lead that investigation because he saw that as an assault on the constitution. he was not some northern liberal that was going after nixon, but a southern democrat, and he also stood up

nuclear plants along with the southern california coast is closing for good the company that owns the plant said that in a surprise statement this morning that they would retire the twin reactors because of uncertainty. well there's been a sixteen month battle to close the facility located between l.a. and san diego the radiation leak in january of two thousand and twelve forced a shutdown and since then critics have been fighting to close the facility for good well salmon freya could the power about one point four million homes and california officials have said that it would be able to make it through the summer without the plant being warned that wildfires or any other disruption could cause power shortages. the plan it's been in operation for forty years in southern california edison says that it would spend about five hundred million dollars over the next two years to close the facility under the supervision of the nuclear regulatory commission. well the court in bexar county texas has acquitted a man who killed an asse court who wouldn't have sex with his lawyers argue that it w
