nbc 10's tim furlong joins us there live. tim, it looks like it's already getting pretty nasty. >> reporter: yeah, ted, i bet it's a lot nicer at the jersey shore right now. deerfield beach, the wind is winning through. tr trying to keep my hat on here. the surf is pounding at the deerfield beach pier. see the wind up here, too. this is what we're dealing with, concerned about. the storm surge in south florida might not be as bad as they originally thought. that's great news. the wind is still real bad. there's a lot of coconuts up there. have to be very careful. thousands in south florida are without power at this point and everybody in the eastern side of federal highway, a1a that runs down this part of florida, they've been told they have to evacuate. not allowed out here. there are police officers we had to show homeland security papers to to get over the bridge to the beach. they said you're going to do your job for a little while then get out of here, don't want people out here any longer than they have to be and any non

tonight tim furlong spoke to the veteran about the outburst. >> it's nasty to me. don't care. >> no, it's not. >> reporter: by now millions around the world have seen the video. a woman losing her temper in part because there is a dog in a restaurant. it was a veteran with a service dog. turns out the video was shot friday night here at cathy's crab house in delaware city which today proudly says service dogs are welcome. cathy owns the place. bill is the veteran. a delaware native now living in montana who was here with his service dog jp. he did tours in bosnia, iraq and afghanistan. the dog helps him with ptsd. bill was surprised when things got so ugly on friday. >> it's disgusting to have an animal inside a public restaurant. >> reporter: the woman didn't like the idea of a dog in a restaurant. but it wasn't just a pet. it's a service animal. under the americans with disabilities act the dog was allowed to stay. the woman's only option was to take herself out of the restaurant. she didn't leave quietly. some good has come out of folks seeing this video. >> it'

tim furlong is there in florida. tammie souza, you have the latest track. >> it looks like it's going to cover all of florida. let's take a lock. the giant hurricane is category 4. a strong, almost 5 hurricane. it could strengthen back up to a 5. it doesn't matter. it's now starting to make that very gentle turn to the northwest. more of northwest rather than west/northwest. it may skim the northern part of cuba, but it's becoming close to miami. the outer bands of the clouds and even some rain showers are making it in that direction right now. so they are starting to see some of the effects of irma headed their way. already moving through the bahamas and it's going tb tomorrow night when this makes landfall. 155 mile an hour winds. it is 225 miles east of caribbe caribbean. and the millibars, 925 millibars so the pressure has come up a little bit. still an incredibly strong storm. let's e show you where this is going to be headed. it is going to make a beeline for the tip of florida. anywhere this this cone. it coul

tim furlong, what are you seeing right now? >> reporter: yeah, ted, it's bad. we left our hotel where we were all day, we lost power, we were having difficulty getting cell service. we came to this shopping center where we were the other day. we cannot really take you out to show you everything that's going on, because some signs are coming half out of the ground. if i can show you over here under this tree, there is a sign that is now down, tree limbs down, winds gusting everywhere. sam having a little trouble standing up, and back at the hotel, it's not much better. at least you're safe inside, but the conditions are pretty bad today. outside our hotel west of miami, exactly what the rest of south florida is getting, heavy wind and endless, horizontal rain. inside our hotel, no power. this means no lights, no elevators, and even worse, no air-conditioning. >> when you live on ac all the time, it's a bummer. having no power sucks, but you can just wait it out. >> reporter: people are having ice cream before it melts. it's tough for the dogs and for their owner

e we sent tim furlong ahead of this storm. he's following how people are bracing tonight. >> a beautiful evening and lots of people taking their e boats out here. we saw a yacht go by. a lot of boats going that direction to get away from the storm and get to a place where they can put their boat out of the water. this is a lifeguard stand here in hollywood beach. you see it's on the ledge. if the winds are as bad as they could be, he's not sure they will survive. all day long, businesses have been boarding up. they have not boarded up the n windows. they put plywood over the edge. they have been trying to get the ounings down. it seems to be a big concern. they had the beautiful awnings that are strapped down. if the wind catches under that, you know what's going to happen. it's going to flip and go up. it's a very dangerous situation. a lot of people who even this morning were telling us here on hollywood beach that maybe they are going to stay. maybe it's not going to be so bad. a lot of people having a change of heart and a

. >> we have more from south florida and tim furlong joining us with the damage in floodwaters. >> reporter: good morning from south florida -- in ft. lauderdale. >> reporter: good morning from south florida. we're looking at damage caused by hurricane irma now that the wind has calmed down. leak at this shopping center, basically under water here. plenty of debris is out here. also you see some of the waves that are kind of being the ripples in the water here caused by some of the winds that we're feelinga this time in ft. lauderdale. also the wind has caused a lot of damage, as you see. across the street, there's a few branches and even trees that are basically blocking some of the roads here which is creating a big problem for first responders who are basically going around some of the neighborhoods to assess the damage. back here at the shopping center, i want to show you a little bit of how strong the winds were in the last 24 hours. look at this tree that is basically blocking one of the exits from this shopping center. it was basically ripped out from the ground. you can only imagine

we'll begin with tim furlong live in miami beach. the storm is gone there now? >> reporter: yeah. take a look at it. it looks like a perfect miami day but if you look closer, you can see what the storm left behind. there's still sand left everywhere. if you come around this way, i've got to tell you, all of the sand that you're seeing back here, it came from over the do you know dunes. these are whole palm trees lifted up and snapped. t palm trees, by the way, usually don't break. this is broke in half. it's a nightmare situation but people feel lucky especially considering what is going on down in the keys. new video of the damage is astounding. mobile home after mobile home flipped over. this is key west near where hurricane irma made landfall. testing the limits of everything in the storm's path. irma turned up in florida weakening in strength. now it's a tropical depression and left behind a tail of destruction. millions without power across the sunshine state. streets are flooded and water temporarily sucked out to sea stranded two manassees there and two dolphins near marco

. >> tim furlong just arrived in florida ahead of the record breaking and catastrophic storm. >> e we to a store and there's long lines for gas. people on a sunny day loading up their cars with gas and supplies trying to get out of town. we went to a walmart and stocked up pretty dwood. got a lot of things. our crew got here and is going to need to get us through. just storm essentials. even to protect our camera gear, trash bag. s, things like that. more rubber boots that we need for the trip down here. walmart was crowded. they did not have water. you can try all you want to go to place, but finding a case of water is almost impossible in south florida. we did find individual bottles of water, but we grabbed a few and brought some down here from philadelphia and delaware. we brought as much water as we could shove into our bags. we can see people are getting concerned. roads are getting busy now. a lot of that area is under mandatory evacuation. people are trying to get out before the storm gets in. we're going to keep you posted. >> as you see, tim is there. we have a team of repor

nbc tim furlong explains, he followed this report from deerfield beach just a short time ago. >> we've had it all here in south florida. the wind, you see the palm trees blowing. it is an absolute nightmare. there is an evacuation order under effect for all the florida beach towns. anybody that's out, police are coming up and telling you to get out of the way. the wind and rain is coming horizontal. most of the areas east of the a 1 a are now closed off. they don't want you coming over. they've blocked most access roads. they are arresting homeless people just to get them off the street in some cases. and of course there are the tornado warnings. our phones went crazy the warnings came across our phone. there was an actual tornado warning in coral springs and it worked its way up to the north west part of broward county. we're all kind of hanging in there that as it gets worse t doesn't get too much worse. >> all right, tim. thank you for that. with more on the power of irma, i'm joined by phil, a meteorologist with colorado state university. he joins me on the phone. phil, good mornin

but as nbc 10's tim furlong found out, it's getting harder and harder to find. >> reporter: after we'vee our live shots at 6:00 tonight, we had the task of going and finding gas in south florida. is really is an almost impossible task the we waited in line for 40 minutes, 40 minutes it took to come out here and get some gas. you can see a lot of the pumps have bags over them. but the pump that we used happened to have some gas left in it. we saw a couple of trucks coming in to refill some gas stations in the area, people following those tanker trucks to get the gas they need. but again, for us, about 40 to 45 minutes to sit in a line out on the highway getting here and finally get our gas. the situation not going to get much better here in south florida as more people realize they need to get out of here in advance of irma. they need to fill up and start driving. it's going to be tough to find that fill up you need. >> tim and from our spanish language station will both be reporting from south florida as hurricane irma gets closer and closer. look for their live up dalgts right here on

nbc 10's tim furlong and telemundo 62 reporter, christiane cazares are following the latest as people rush to prepare. >>> happening today, friends and family will pay their last respects to jenna burleigh, the temple university student who was murdered last week. a funeral mass is scheduled for this evening. members of her hometown community honored her at the viewing yesterday. the crowd was so large, police had to help to control traffic. and at temple university where burleigh recently transferred, students, faculty, and the university's president came together for an emotional vigil. in the heart of the campus flowed heartfelt condolences. >> i just want to let the family know that we're deeply saddened. >> i couldn't believe it, honestly. it didn't seem real, until it was. >> my heart goes out to the family. the burleigh family, wonderful people. >> the man accused of killing jenna burleigh has a new lawyer. the attorney has not responded to nbc 10's request for a comment. >>> the alleged accomplice in a bucks county killing spree that captivated the country over the summer insi
