our first warning coverage begins with marty bass and tim williams over in the first warning weather center. >>> mother nature's gift is not making matters worse. giving us more winds and making the cleanup difficult. we have winds now around the state, 10 mile-per-hour winds at bwi marshall. nothing too gusty. 3 mile-per-hour winds in cumberland and 6 towards packs river. they're ushering in miling temperatures. the temperatures above our normal. we're at 57 in central maryland. 52 out in the western suburbs. what does today and tomorrow hold for the weekend? for more we go to marty. >> thank you. good afternoon. it's beautiful out here right now, the sun is out but we're going to start to see some clouds moving our way. let's look at the graphic, there's a disturbance passing by to the south and going to be a couple of different reasons weather is unsettled. the cool flow from the northwest, but let's look at first warning doppler, is this low passing down to the south? this will show where moisture is aloft. that's not necessarily rain falling, however clouds start moving our way.

let's go back to meteorologist tim williams in the weather center. tim? >> you know, denise. this was a very difficult assessment for the national weather service to make, partially because it was actually a combination of straight-line winds and in fact a tornado that touched down briefly for five minutes. the statement said that this was, in fact, an enhanced fujita scale, f1 tornado. the way enhanced fujitas are, 86-mile-per-hour winds, to roughly 109-mile-per-hour. one really triggers damaging winds up to the moderate scale, which is exactly what you saw. trees knocked down. rooftops blown over. cars moved slightly across parking lots. and that was also embedded. and this was embedded in a line of straight line winds. again, winds that were splintered off from a strong tornado, thunderstorm. tornado spawned from that thunderstorm. straight-line winds came out of that thunderstorm. so very strong thunderstorms moved across, generated winds and a tornado that touched down for just about five minutes out of that storm. and again, that was in the range from just about morgan

tim williams and bob turk show you what to expect if you're heading out tonight. bob? >> it has been a spectacular week. nice afternoons, temperatures. chilly mornings. very dry air. nothing around here at all. we're down to 51 degrees. from our high in the mid-60s this afternoon very quickly. because the air is so dry. out to the west, not so dry. we have some precip. rain. even snow around minneapolis. and northern sections of wisconsin. we won't see that, but we'll probably see some of that rain but not until maybe tuesday or wednesday. in the meantime, tim williams has a look at saturday and the weekend in general. >> reporter: we have these nice conditions right on into the weekend. the high pressure is solidly under control. we're under a dome of high pressure in fact. it's allowing for milder-than- normal temperatures. we have been in the 60s. ask we'll continue to be in the 60s through saturday and sunday. that low gets here by monday into tuesday. and that's our first chance of rain. bob will outline those. >>> a disappointing defeat for the ravens. it went do

bob turk and meteorologist tim williams are here to show us how low the temperatures will go tonight. we'll start with bob. >> this late in november, our normal lows are low to mid-30s. it's going to be chilly. take a look at radar. there is nothing around as far as precip. we've dropped down to 47 already. but there's basically no wind. how does it look for your weekend? tim in the outback with the saturday forecast. and even into sunday for one place, tim? >> well, you know, the saturday forecast is going to be really nice. as far as temperatures are cash said -- concerned, we'll number the upper 50s. we're expecting a very quick- moving clipper system to move past our north, way to the north. it will be close enough just that it affects us by winds. winds will be a little breezy. what you're looking at there, that is bank of america stadium in charlotte. and that's going to come on up, basically. it's going to show us that the forecast for the game is going to be about 70 degrees. sunshine and blue skies down there. pretty calm conditions. ravens and the carolina panthers is going

meteorologist tim williams explains why it's so difficult to determine. tim? >> reporter: well, mary, you might think it is simple to determine what alwaysed the problem. -- caused the problem. the bottom line is the damaging wind, it is still going to be a damaging wind. now, at the height of this storm, some winds were clocked at 80 miles per hour plus. and there could have been gusts higher. destructive straight-line wins, though, are created when winds come straight down. you hear us talk about microbursts come down and hit the ground. and they will follow the terrain. so they can pick up speed across the field, across roadways. and whatever they hit, they're going to tear apart. they really splinter off from a jet stream. they come down quickly. and that speed is picked up when they hit the ground. the tornadic wind, still with the same type of force, you're talking 80 to maybe 90-mile-per- hour winds. create moderate damage. it can be roofs damaged, trees knocked around. those are things the trees are -- the national weather service is looking at. we are

meteorologist tim williams has more on how that decision is made. >> reporter: you might wonder why it's taking them so long to make the determination. but there are so many factors. first of all, the types of wind that come through. no matter what type, the winds are damaging no matter what. destructive straight line winds. they ride the terrain ask blast right into whatever is in their way. that caused the same type of damage that tornadoes do typically. but those speeds can -- winds can reach speeds of 180 miles per hour. they splinter off a jet stream and come down to the ground level and hit anything and tear it up. tornadic winds, well, they can really cause anything from light to moderate damage. anything to windows being blown up. to significant to severe damage. typically, what they're watching is for damage done in a rotating kind of a form. they're going to be making that determination. we're told now that they will have the determination made sometime after 6:00 p.m. today. >> all right, tim. thank you. >>> stay with wjz for first warning weather coverage. remember, wjz is al

meteorologist tim williams is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> well, mary, delightful afternoon. not one we could say is in the record books by any stretch of the imagination. but we're definitely approaching some levels we don't see here in this often. take a look at first doppler radar. high pressure in control at the eastern sea board. the dew point and humidity are at 12. 12 degrees. and relative humidity at 12%. 12% is almost unheard of here. bob turk and i were talking about arizona levels, so dry, where you hardly feel any moisture levels at all. 65 degrees is above the normal high. and the only thing we have really to talk about is this advisory in effect. a coastal flood advisory. because we have winds blowing on shore, they could be one or two feet higher than average at times. and as soon as winds shift around, those levels will drop. but that is only a minor concern. nothing major on the coast. we'll talk about how long the stretch continues in just a few moments. >>> let's check on the roads with sharon gibala at wjz traffic control. >>> well,
