i'd like to extend a special thanks to our highway administration and to thank all the toll payers who made this possible. i'd like to a thank all the people to tell this story through their words and photographs and videos and personal stories from engineers to administrative staff, xarptsd and painters and iron rngz and boat captains and project managers and every other job there is. the people on this project have been truly exceptional not just professional and hardworking but happy to be doing the work they do and happy to talk about it and to share their problematic on this incredible project. i remember coming out to the island in the previous day labor day closing and being fascinate by carrying out staff. the whole island was abuzz. it was the buzz of commitment. i'll never forgot the dynamic as watching the engineers that evening as we watched the crew at the time sit out the hypocritical jacks and they move forward the 3 hundred and 50 foot new bridge pass by inch by inch. there was only two inches even if space on that 3 hundred and 50 innovate section. this bridge is made

we just went through the toll plaza. i'm driving here. the first morning commute across the new eastern span of the bay bridge. i have not been across the bridge myself here. we're coming up to the incline here shortly. not much traffic at the toll plaza. not a wait to get across at this hour. we will see how things progress throughout the morning. there it is right there. the new bay brick laid out in front of us. you can see the traffic coming up the incline. obviously this will be one morning commute that a lot of drivers will actually enjoy. just a beautiful bridge as it is laid out in front of you here. obviously wide open. you will have a good view. it's dark right now. once things get light, it will be nicer. traffic flowing pretty nice. remember the speed limit, 50 miles per hour. we are going about that speed limit as we speak. most cars it seems is going the same speed as well this morning. people not going too slow. that was one concern that obviously the chp had, that drivers would be coming up this incline here and would be d

some of the drivers at the toll plaza getting ready to go over it for the first time on the right-side of the screen. take a look at the traffic conditions. you see the unusual breadth section on westbound interstate 80 basically headed south portal toll plaza where it appears many drivers are making it a point to use the new span of the bay bridge today. there was also an accident about an hour ago on the bridge westbound block the shorter -- the shoulder. the bike paths and pedestrian walkway just opened for the first time. talking to excited drivers, but we begin our team coverage from above the new span. how are drivers handling the new bridge? >> reporter: i'm going to show your picture of the traffic on the new bridges. our photographer is going to pan today. you can see the traffic is moving along pretty well getting up to this point, but where the slowdown has been have the drivers coming up to the new span and trying to take pictures. of course, a couple accidents, as you mentioned. some complained the lights were on extra slow. one driver told us it took him more than an hour
